    3. Hi Robyn, This confirms what I have found in the official records. There was reported a case where the Court hearing the application for a Publican's License was adjourned to a later date for certificates of character to be produced. I didn't see the report of what followed - but there was no license given to this chap. Your comments also show VERY CLEARLY that what I am presenting is only the official version. Our ancestors weren't stupid - they knew how to work the system to their own ends. I've got several reports where the traveller states that the publican and the Homestead Lessee was the same person. I suspect that my Garrett Byrnes got around this by officially transferring his Homestead Lease to his father when he took over the hotel. Also there no mention ever made officially that the pubs were sold - just a form for the transfer of License - as if the only cost was the Annual Licensing Fee. Yet in the papers the hotels were for sale.
