Mary Wilson is the expert on Menindee and the surrounding area. Referring to Maiden's Menindie/Menindee Hotel, she writes: "The hotel itself, came into the hands of the Maiden family before 1880, and the licence was held by that family until 1979." Starting as a grog shanty in the early 1850s, the hotel at Menindie was a well established building by the 1860 Burke and Wills' visit. In 1879 William Maiden was the first of the Maiden family to hold the license.He again held the license 1881-1885, and 1897 to at least 1900 (when I stopped copying the records). His brother George held the license in 1891.
