On the 1908 electoral the name was written as Charles Barnes Efford. This one person was apparently a cousin to Mary ann Parker, nee Sutton. Her parents were Jams Sutton and Ann Jane Sutton nee Barnes. I cannot find a Laurence Suton on my tree or Esther Barnes. But. with the amount of brick walls I have hit I guess there is a chance of a connection somewhere. Clarification please Was it Charles BARNES or Charles EFFORD who was on the electoral roll at Nymagee in 1913? Also, was it Charles BARNES or Charles EFFORD who was a cousin of Mary PARKER neeSUTTON and when would she have been born and who were her parents? I have an Esther BARNES marrying a Lawrence SUTTON at Parkes in 1919 but I don't know any family for them. Hi Vicki, I presume that you have already used the NSW-West pico-search to find that Charles Augustus John GORRINGE in 1909 had the Western Land Lease No 2231 at Balranald. There are also numerous Butlers mentioned. Hello Jill Thank you very much indeed for this information. I am delighted and very grateful. I particularly appreciate the time it takes to type such things out. My apologies for the delay in thanking you. I have not had a chance to get to my emails over the past few days. Of course I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything further re the OLIVER family or the stations they lived on. My Grandfather came out from Scotland and married Elizabeth Dowell. They settled at Kenilworth, Byrock. His partner diddled him and he went bankrupt and retired to Cremorne to live out the rest of his life. He had six children. I looked up the family Bible as under William Oliver (Scotland) B 1849 M Elizabeth Dowell (England) B 1865. Married St Johns Church Sydney Feb 23rd 1886. They had a large family of whom Jack Davidson Oliver was one of the youngest. He was wounded at the War and died at Bourke in 1935. He was born at Katoomba in 1891 and married Sylvia Wiggan in 1919. Their two daughters have both died. Jack was in the Light Horse Regiment AIF. My father managed Milroy at Brewarrina which was between the Culgoa and Birrie Rivers and moved to Angledool when the war ended (2nd World War). I remember going to Bourke many times with him as a child, particularly to the Anzac Day Service. If I can help in any other way let me know. Dear Sue, From what I can deduce from the web, Poolamacca is a 50,000-hectare station north of Broken Hill Have you ever considered contacting the owner or manager of POOLAMACCA to see if there were any diaries or employment records existing from that time? The web shows this address: Poolamacca Station Broken Hill New South Wales 2880 Ph: (08) 8091 2574 Poolamacca Station has been involved under the buy-back scheme and I expect would be managed on behalf of either the local aboriginal Land Council or more than likely the State / Federal Authority that does the buying. The present manager would be accountable to them. Before the buy-back took place a full investigation into the ownership and history would have had to take place by the government. This is a matter of public record and should be available from the relevant government authority. I have no idea what you are likely to find. Poolamacca's owner was one of the original shareholders at the time of the Broken Hill Company see: http://www.geocities.com/bhhsi/tracing-history11.html But at the time when finally the fortunes of the group were soaring, the fourteen shareholders in the Broken Hill Company, which held the leases of the Hill and had taken over responsibility for calls at the rate of 10/- per week were: 1. Charles Rasp - Boundary rider, Mount Gipps Station. 2. George McCulloch, Manager Mount Gipps Station, 3. David James, Contractor, 4. James Poole, Contractor, his mate. 5. Philip Charley, on Mount Gipps Station, 6..Solomon Wiseman, Rabbit Inspector, 7. Kenneth Brodribb, Station owner, Poolamacca, 8. Bowes Kelly, late station manager, Billilla, 9. Samuel Hawkins, Carpenter, 10. W. R. Wilson, Manager Barrier Ranges Association, 11. James G. Dalglish,District surveyor, Dubbo. 12. A. Cox, station hand, 13. William Jamieson, Surveyor, 14. J. C. Palmer. Here is another reference that may be worth following http://www.geocities.com/willyame2001/page20.html This one shows some buildings at POOLAMACCA http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/MUGS/Campsite.html I wonder would the librarian at the Broken Hill library be able to help you: Broken Hill City Library, Outback Archives Blende Street, Broken Hill 2880 Telephone (08) 8088 3117 URL http://www.brokenhill.nsw.gov.au/ http://www.bhlibrary.org.au/ http://www.bhlibrary.org.au/genealogy.html general e-mail: admin@bhlibrary.org.au e-mail archives@bhlibrary.org.au Cheers, Tony Moore @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Frape <frapessa@adam.com.au> Date: Monday, January 26, 2004 12:45 pm Subject: [NSW-W] BOON STEPHENSON Poolamacca Station > Hi all > > I am new to the list and I am really hoping someone can help me > with a few brick walls. Hi all I am new to the list and I am really hoping someone can help me with a few brick walls. My first is James BOON. Name: James BOON Status: Bachelor Place of Birth: Not stated Usual residence: Poolamacca Station near Silverton Parents: Not stated Occupation: Blacksmith Married Jeanie STEPHENSON on 16 Nov 1886 at the Parsonage in Silverton, NSW Name: Jeanie STEPHENSON Status: Spinster Place of Birth: Not stated Usual residence: Poolamacca Station near Silverton Parents: Not stated Occupation: Domestic servant Together they had 13 children the first two, Edwin and James were born in Gawler, SA 1887 & 1888 the rest were born in Broken Hill, NSW 1890 to 1907. I do not have their deaths. I am looking for any information on the couple and POOLAMACCA STATION where it looks as though they worked. I have not had much success with google searches. many thanks Sue Frape South Australia
Hi Phillip Nothing on your Carruthers, but I have at least 2 mistakes in the BDM records. One was someone who was 23 when they died. BDM lists them as 28. Another is the birth of a daughter which is actualy listed as a male and is the father's name. I think in the transcription and data entry there is plenty of room for error. If your Robert shot through, he may also have gone to Queensland or Victoria. Also he may have lied about his age. The information on a death certificate is only as good as the informant and I don't suppose stockman necessarily told their life stories to all they met, so the informant may have known almost nothing about the stockman, who probably had no papers on him either. Good luck Jill
Hello, NSW BDM lists the death of Robert CARRUTHERS in Wee Waa on 25 April 1859. His death certificate says he was 26 and a stockman who had been in the colony for nine years. He was from Lancaster. The informant was John Antonio Peterson, Carpenter, Wee Waa. Peterson was also the undertaker. Does anyone have more information about? I've been looking for my g.g.grandfather, Robert Salkeld CARRUTHERS who apparently didn't die because he's not listed on BDM. The time of this Robert's death and his time in the colony are very similar to what we know or think about my Robert but his age is not right. It's possible that he was my Robert and the ages is listed wrong. Or he may well have shot through from Maitland where he was living. He left a wife and five kids in Maitland if he did. Clutching at straws so any information will be appreciated. Phillip Carruthers Brisbane, Queensland, AUSTRALIA
Hi Everyone, I have just done a long-overdue surnames listing update. It is at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/surnames.html If you are waiting for an update, and you have not just received an e-mail from me offlist, please check to see if you are there. I may have lost you. Hope not, but flitting between two 'puters, it can happen. If you do have a listing there, and have changed your e-mail address since listing, could you please also let me know. Nothing worse for me than having people e-mail me wanting to find the new e-mail address for someone - there is often no way I can easily pick it up. But if you are writing to me, it is really important to tell me which list you are talking about, as I administer a few. Thanks! Linda kapana@netspace.net.au
Hi Linda, I've only got 2 people I'm looking for. John McCulloch GOLDSWORTHY d. 1955 Malboona Station. Stuck by lightening. Looking for more details if possible.
