    1. [NSW-W] [Admin] Important e-mail address change
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, Many of you will have had reason to check (and give thanks for) the License Holders and Publican listed on the NSW-West home page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ A number of these also relate to the list-area covered by AUS-NSW-CENTRAL. These are the wonderful work of Rusheen Craig, who has just had an e-mail address change. She did understand that her mail would be forwarded for six months, and has just discovered this is not so. I will be changing her address on all the web pages tonight, but she and I are concerned that people may have saved e-mails from her (she has had a number of queries relating to the pages) or have her in their address books, and may attempt unsuccessfully to contact her. Rusheen's new e-mail address is rusheen@optusnet.com.au While posts to lists from people just saying "I have changed my e-mail address" are not something that is encouraged (if you have a surname listing, please do write to me, but offlist, telling me what and where it is, and I can change it. You also need to unsubscribe yourself using the old address and resubscribe using the new address - just writing to the list does not do it for you). However Rusheen's work is so important that people may well need to know this change, especially if they are in the middle of a "conversation" with her, as she can no longer access her old e-mail address to help people. Cheers Linda List-admin AUS-NSW-WEST, AUS-NSW-CENTRAL

    1. [NSW-W] New Place Names Website.
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, This is just to announce that a new website has been launched for the AUSTRALIAN-PLACENAMES list at Rootsweb. It is at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AP/index.html While it doesn't give you the meaning of the placenames then and there, it has an impressive listing of places where you can go looking for your information. Although it is best for those looking for place names in Victoria, it does have some clues to where to look for obscure NSW place names as well. And, let's face it - we have a fair few of them (obscure place names, that is!) Cheers Linda

    3. Hi there Sandra and David, tis Bernice here,,Had a bit of a quick look, found this little bit,Fredrick Cleaver was Head teacher April 1934.but this might bring a smile or two. "I recall one April Fools Day when Mr Cleaver sent an unsuspecting lad around to Murrays store to buy a can of striped paint. However, later the joke was reversed when the teacher was bending over to light the incinerator ---a tail was pinned on him.All the pupils were highly amused,Sir wasn't. 3. Bernice, I met a man in Canberra early this month partly to find out his knowledge about a school where I taught for 11 years before a medical retirement. The man in question is the 70 + year old son of a former principal of my former school.Much of our discussion was about Wongarbon School rather than Erina Heights which I understand his father was largely instrumental in getting going or at least getting on the straight and narrow. If you should have any references to Mr Cleaver at Wongarbon about 60 or more years back then I would welcome them . I will then pass them on Mr Cleaver jnr in Canberra partly as a way of thanking him for his time and for donating some photos to my former school. I heard stories about Wongarbon such as Mr Cleaver owned a car but the only policeman owned a horse. When the policeman had to go to outlying properties to identity bodies etc then he called on the teacher to drive him and act as witness. I'm assuming that Wongarbon is the place just outside Dubbo. There couldn't be two cities like Wongarbon surely. Regards David Central Coast NSW

    3. Dear Susan, May I suggest that you try all kinds of possible phonetic spellings. As an example, when you use the database at Land & Property Information.... http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/pmap/search/pmap_websearch.display with only ....... COOM ... you get some of these possibles. COOMBADJHA DRAKE Parish COOMBAH Western division parish See county map: WINDEYER WINDEYER COOMBARRA Western division parish See county map: YANCOWINNA YANCOWINNA COOMBELL RICHMOND Parish COOMBES Western division parish See county map: RANKIN RANKIN COOMBIE Western division parish See county map: MOSSGIEL MOSSGIEL Instead of .... YUB .... try YOOB ........ etc, etc ......... You can search the various parish maps from the above web site too. The names you have are only a phonetic attempt to write down what the original word sounded like by someone who was definitely not skilled in anthropology and who spoke with a very, very different accent to the one you use now. My ancestor who also came from the Cowra - Forbes area has 3 relevant certificates but with three different spelling variations of Merriganowrie ! May I suggest too, that you put your request out to a much wider audience on GENANZ-L@rootsweb.com Ask for possible spelling variations and possible locations. There are some people on that list who are very familiar with various aboriginal languages and dialects who may be able to direct you more closely. Looking in the white pages on line, you may like to contact one of the following locally in Lismore to try to narrow the language group which may help considerably in positioning the properties / cattle stations. One of the interesting queries I have had concerns Stanley Elson aka John Nielson (Aged 72 years, died 9th May 1994) buried in the Pooncarie cemetery. Has anyone ever heard of this person, or why he was known by two names? He has a war plaque, so he must have been in WW2. Best wishes Mary Wilson http://members.iinet.net.au/~mewilson

Being an ex Broken Hillite, and having worked in the areas of Broken Hill, Wicannia , Menindee and Tibooburra , Wannaaring and Bourke. Sarah and James are the Grandfather and Grandmother of My wife. Bronk, Neil, and Jessie are aunts and uncles of my wife. The George Smith buried at White Cliffs may be a Great uncle of my wife , who was the brother of Joshua Smith, the father in law of James (Bronk) Hancock and father of Helen Hancock (nee Smith). If you have photos of these grave sites , would it be possible to Email them to me . 1. Re: [NSW-W] Terminology - whats a stand?
    2. Aileen Susan Jeffery
    3. In this context 'stand' meant that the Father wanted to be able to pay his son's way until he, the son, found work, the extra pound would have helped immensely in being able to 'stand' him without either of them going short. It is also an expression used by a group of blokes going to the pub, they then decide to 'stand' a round of drinks each....means each bloke pays for a round of drinks for all the others in the group, he in turn gets a drink from each of the others in the group when their turn comes to 'stand' their rounds. Yes, it is also used as a term in shearing sheds the number of shearers employed is determined by the number of 'stands' of shearing equipment there is in the shed, could be one or it could be 20 depending on the size of the shed to be used! Hope that helps, Sincerely, S.JEFFERY ,----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen" <karens@optushome.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 6:04 PM Subject: [NSW-W] Terminology - whats a stand? > In our family research we have uncovered a letter written by my grandfather > to his son in Queensland. > My grandfather lived and worked on properties in and around Nyngan from 1892 > until 1930. > In the letter he mentions the need to "stand" one of his sons to get work. > Does anyone know what a stand was / is? > It sounds like some sort of surety? bond? or maybe to purchase gear to work? > The actual wording is........ > "Tomy is not doing anything at all, I have no money to stand him again, if I > could get one pound it would do to make another stand" > To put it into context - they had come from Nyngan to Sydney as there was > obviously no work in Nyngan for them.
