    1. [NSW-W] Out of the West again
    2. Nelson & Livingstone
    3. Hi, me again I was asked where I found the book. Heard the author interviewed on Macca's program on Sunday morning a couple of months back. If you want to buy the book, it is $43.00, and it is very big - large format and 448 pages. Send your order to Mr R Condon 20 Quest Avenue YOWIE BAY 2228 Dick's phone no is 9524 3618 The book is an "abridged" version of his research. He also has unabridged sections, and when I spoke to him he recommended "The History of Land Settlement in the Western Division of NSW" as being of further interest to me which he will copy and sent in a binder to you for $30.00. You may prefer to just buy that. I think I will buy that next, but I want to try and take in the one I have already first. All of this work is of course a huge labour of love by someone with an extensive knowledge and love of the West. Best wishes to all Jill Jill

    1. [NSW-W] Book on Western NSW
    2. Nelson & Livingstone
    3. Hi to those people who asked me about particular people and places in "out of the West". Unfortunately there is no index. However, I have noted down your interests and as I am highlighting the names of people and properties when I come across them, if I find yours I will let you know. In the meantime there is a great list of references in the book. Many of them should be available at local libraries through inter library loan. Tony, have you come across the following: Thompson, Elaine (ed) (1993) "Brewarrina Bric-aBrac", Brewarrina and District Historical Society. Ross Allan (ed)(1982) "Outback Heritage - Bygone Years", Brewarrina Historical Society. Also generally the following sound interesting: Brodribb, WA (1883) Recollections of an Australian Squatter Hardy Bobbie, (1969) West of the Darling Barnard alan, (1962), The Simple Fleece Lans Rob, Smith Thelma, Smith Bob, the history of Pooncarie and District Shaw, Mary Turner (1987) Yancannia Creek That's all for now. Cheers Jill

    3. Jill, This book sounds very interesting. If something were to come up about "The Overflow" ststion right from beginning to end I would be very interested. Also I think The Overflow were also known as the Wicklow blocks. Where did you find the book. Maybe worth having for me? 3. List members may be interested in a book I have recently purchased - "Out of the West" by Dick Condon. The book is an historical perspective of the Western Division, which Dick is uniquely placed to give as a former Western Lands Commissioner. I'm not going to try to review the book, it is far too detailed and I have only dipped into it so far. It is divided into 3 parts, 1. to 1900; 2. 1901-1945; 3. 1946-1990. It has info about: a.. soils, landform, vegetation b.. Aborigines c.. explorers, squatters d.. legislation to control land settlement; 1901 Royal Commission and Western Lands Act e.. early pastoral industry etc etc. It's not so much about people, so is not really useful in terms of lookups, but from time to time I will email bits which might be of interest to the list, about conditions in the West and so on. In the meantime, how is everyone? The list has been very quiet lately. Are you all still there? Jill

    3. My Wifes' g gfather , Jame Larkin , Arrived in Australia about 1872 , and may have landed at Maryborough on the Polmaise on its final Journey before sinking on the Great Barrier Reef. He came alone and it is not known if any of his Siblings followed , or if he even had any . We do know that he came from Kilkenny and was born about 1846. He did well for himself in Australia , arriving with nothing, He became a publican owning the Bunker Hotel near White Cliffs Which was burnt down and was the last licencee of the Victoria Hotel between Wilcannia and White Cliffs. The Victoria Hotel was also the homestead of a pastoral lease , Which passed on to his sons when he died, he died in Broken Hill and was buried in Wilcannia in 1938. Could you pass this note on to any Larkins that may turn up at your reunion , because although he raised a family , he never spoke of his Childhood, and it is likely that he had siblings that may have followed him here, or remained in Ireland. It is believed that his parents may have been victims of the Potato famine , because they are shown as farmers on his marriage certificate and death certificate. 1. [NSW-W] Waugh
    2. Karen
    3. Does the surname Waugh from the Nyngan / Warren area mean anything to anyone? I was putting away some old notes on the weekend when I stumbled on some that I made relating to an uncle who died in Warren in 1930. Along side his DOB and DOD I have written the note "worked for Waugh". Problem is that I have no idea who Waugh is or where I would have gotten that information. All we know about this Uncle is that he died in Warren, in December 1930, 4 months after his fathers death in Sydney. He was thrown by a horse (or so the family have been told) but no one in the family has any idea of what he was doing in Warren or why (there are a few theories but nothing with any fact). I have been fumbling around with our family tree for 15 years or so, but started with my mothers family. I am guessing I made this note while in the State Library, 15 years ago. While we were waiting for things to come from the stack (the days before everything was on microfilm) we would often browse around other family names. I just have no idea where I would have gotten any information though. It was an accidental death, no inquest or anything and he was very young. We used to read the old Nyngan papers, but don't remember ever coming across anything relating to this brother. A lesson learnt to reference the sources of all information even in notes - but in the meantime I am left with a big question mark. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas......... PS after many years of trying to find an uncle who was last seen in 1939, I can happily say he is found and its a great feeling. He changed his name to join up in WW2 and lived the rest of his life under that assumed name, making finding him very very difficult. Thank goodness for computers and the ready access of information these days. I only wish we had had all of this 30 years ago - he need never have died alone. I have not lost my mind - it's backed up on disk somewhere. -- Unknown Keep Looking For Rainbows!! _--_|\ /Karen \ \ _.--._ / v Karen, Mum to Alex (8 years, T-18 Mosaic) http://members.optushome.com.au/karens Karen

    3. Dear Elaine. Your first port of call for NSW places is "Land and Property Information" http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au You will find the Historic Town, Parish, County and Pastoral map database from the above at: http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/pmap/search/pmap_websearch.display When you put in ....... Warren .... You are given 8 choices, one of which is "Warren Downs" There are then historic maps from 1885 (two), 1893 and 1923 1885 was the year when the first Land Courts were held. The winners of the ballot became known as "Selectors". I have just finished reading "On our Selection" by Steel Rudd (A collection of the published stories about 'Dad & Dave) which gives a great insight into what life was like back in that era. 1. [NSW-W] Don BURNS at "Rutherglen" Nyngan.
    2. Rusheen Craig
    3. The NSW State Library's PICMAN has a wonderful photo of Don BURNS handling 14 horses to clear land on "Rutherglen" - Nyngan. (At Work and Play - 03539). Now MY Daniel BYRNES jun. was known as Don (born 1870). He was in the general - very general - vicinity at the time. The photo is of a tall man, and all the male BYRNES were tall strapping figures. However, if I am to claim him as mine simply on the basis of his stature, then I should mention that the BYRNES' women were petite, with waists that could be spanned by two hands. In this statement I stress the past tense. So things change; and generalisations should not be used to try to claim kinship. Does anyone know anything about the Don BURNS who appears in the Rutherglen photo? Regards ..............Rusheen.
