I have just come back from a long and frustrating day at the NSW State Records Office. Only so because I never found what I wanted to find :-( However I did learn some information that may be of help for our interstate and overseas members so I thought I would share. The State Records Office is now offering a Probate Packet Copying Service via the internet. You need to provide complete details and they will only copy the entire packet (the ones that I have copied in their entirety usually end up costing me around the $20 mark) but its a huge plus for those folk who live interstate or overseas. In most cases you will still need to be able to access the probate indexes BUT the other plus is that they have upgraded the Archives Investigator on their web site so that it searches series 2 of the probate packets for you on line. Anyway I just thought it may be helpful information for folk. And if need be I can always go to my local library and do lookups on the indexes if it is ever of any help. Take Care Karen (researching the names Miller, Jones, Maitland, Wolstenholme, Schuler, Reed, Carrick and Cahill)
An advance notice that the "Shoalhaven Family,Local and Cultural Fair" will be held at the Nowra School of Arts on Friday 25th June 10am-6pm and Saturday 26th June 10am to 3pm. Enquiries to wvost@shoal.net.au Mary L. Lidbetter

Hi Everyone, I am well-familiar with the term "Underground Mutton" for rabbits, but last night struck the term "Ration Mutton" or "Ration Sheep", as a Darling River term. Looking for another book, I pulled one of the shelf with no spine, and remembered I had this decrepit copy of C.E.W. Bean's "The Dreadnought of the Darling", which I had always been meaning to read. I THINK this was written about 1909 (the title page etc is missing), and there are lots of gems in there. In particular, he visits the Victoria Hotel between White Cliffs and Wilcannia, that my Frank and Rebecca Barraclough had from 1904 to 1909. Would love to know if they were still there when he wrote about it, but no clues. In 1909 Frank and Rebecca took over the Iduna Park hotel near Cobham Lake, north of Broken Hill. That is where they had a large herd of 40 to 50 goats. And it is C.E.W. Bean who explained to me, that on outback hotel menus, was beef (very rarely), mutton (sometimes)and "meat". Most commonly "Ration mutton". Or goat. I think I begin to understand a little more about my ancestors and their hotels! This book is apparently based on articles he wrote, and stuff he had to leave out of his previous book, "On the Wool Track". Has anyone got a copy of that handy to tell me if that is set on the Darling as well? From comment in this book, it seems he had to restrict himself to the wool matters in that one, whereas in this one he talks about people. Going back to read some more - get ready for snippets - I think C.E.W. has almost been gone long enough to be out of copyright. Must check! Cheers Linda

Hi Marie and list. Here is the poem about my ancestor as requested. It was published in the "Independent Advertiser" Print, Gunnedah. I don't know what date. There are five verses as follows. If you are not interested, just delete this email now. Best wishes, Jill. "KANGAROO NED" by Harry Stockdale Did I know him - did I not, Sir, Old Ned Warmoll, him from Bourke; Why, I've seen him "put 'em up," Sir; Beating Ned war'nt easy work. Was he a big'un, no he war'nt, Fairly tall and rather slight; There were a few round Bourke I'm told Who agreed that Ned could fight. Had some good'uns, I b'lieve you, lad, But the best of all the crew A little bay - a lepper good, Ned called him Kangaroo. Now Ned was fond o' that ere horse - Or a pony's nearer true- For he was only just about What's known as fourteen two. A plum; yes stranger that's bout right I couldn't tell you half he knew, He was a knowing card, that bay, That Ned called Kangaroo. I've heard Ned swear that he could talk- I mean the horse, not Ned- And 'praps he might, but Ned alone Could tell the words he said. When others were tired and failing, You could stake your shirt on one, That he was galloping, galloping, The bay was galloping on. Was topping the rails in good style, Is leading them all but two; He catches them, passes and leads, Does the pony Kangaroo. Little, but good, the pony was, Honest, and game, and true; Could jump like a deer, or rather, An old man Kangaroo. Where are they now? that's hard to say; Are they together those two? Old Ned from the Darling River, And his pony - Kangaroo.

So far l haven't come across any photo's of your Smith or Henning. Albert E Smith is listed as buried in 1916, my records show that it is a unmarked grave. There are a lot of Smiths listed a lot earlier and later. There is also 6listings for Henning; Elizabeth Henning d. 24.7.1916 aged 72, wife of John. in the old Catholic Section. (l have only just started to index this section) Wrightville is a couple miles out of Cobar on the Mt Hope road. All that is left is the old tailings from the old days, new mining companies are now re processing these sites. The Cobar Shire have a very rough map of the layout of the cemetery. When l locate my copy will email you Hope this info is helpful cheers chriss --Boundary_(ID_gdz+eVJpIB2MzCod9Qih+Q) Content-type: TEXT/PLAIN Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-Type: text/plain AUS-NSW-WEST-D Digest Volume 04 : Issue 42 Today's Topics: #1 [NSW-W] Mary's Website ["mewilson" <mewilson@iinet.net.au>] #2 [NSW-W] MI ??
