    3. Hi Judy, I am most interested in this posting of yours. Harold Sykes was married to my grandmother's sister, Valerie May Berkholz. They married 1921, in BH. She was born 1898 in BH. Am unsure of Harold's birth but I'm sure he was a number of years older than Val. She died 1987, Sydney. Harold some years before. I'm sure I have it written down somewhere, but can't locate it now. I recall visiting them on the odd trip to Sydney as a child in the 60s. I know they retired to a a suburb near the airport as I recall watching aircraft take-off and land from their front porch. 5 minutes later: Just found a Berkholz family history written around 1980: It says that Harold died 1979 aged 96 years. Unsure of when they moved from BH, however in this family history he is described as a leading photographer of the city. I suppose given that Harold would have been around 38 when he married, that he'd have been at the Hill for some years before 1921. The family history also says that they moved to a property in the Windsor/Richmond area - presumably before moving to the location near the airport. I'd be interested in what you have - if there's anything to share. 3. Hi Margaret, According to Dansie, the Exchange Hotel was a 12 roomed wood and iron structure opened by Charles F. Duchatel on 24th October,1884 on the north-east corner of Burke and Thackaringa streets. Although the hotel was closed in the early 1890s, Duchatel still owned the block in 1898. Would you like to write a short biography of Charles for inclusion under the Exchange Hotel in the NSW-W Hotel and Publican's Licenses? I was able to contact her late last year at <recraig@optusnet.com.au> but recent addresses have resulted in "undeliverable" advices. 2. Earlier contacts have provided some references from the NSW government website <www. bdm.nsw.gov.au>, but may not have exhausted this source. Localities include Wilcannia and Broken Hill South 1880- (perhaps) 1905, Broken Hill (Thomas L.died 1943) and, for later generations, Wyong, Murwillumbah, Wellington – wherever. The family, we think moved to New Lambton. It is believed that James B.Rowe died there in 1934. Confirmation from a NSW source that James B.Rowe was born in Bendigo would be welcome, as would be the date and place of his marriage to Lillian Grant, middle or late 1880s, perhaps at Wilcannia, but maybe elsewhere in NSW. 1. Warren
    2. Karen
    3. I have a brick wall and I am hoping that someone can help or at least give me a hand with some brainstorming. I have an uncle that died on 22 December 1930 in Warren. (fact) He was 20 (fact) He died of a broken neck in a horse riding accident whilst rounding up sheep (family story - heard by his brothers many years after his death - the broken neck is confirmed on his death certificate) I want to obtain more details of the accident and find out who he was working for at the time. I would also like to know who buried him and where. According to his death certificate he is buried in the RC section of Warren Cemetery. The priest is listed on the death certificate. However he is not in the burial register of the Catholic Church at Warren. The records for Warren Cemetery for that time period are lost - and his grave is not listed in those documented from remaining headstones (doubt he would have had a headstone) Police records for that time period have been destroyed and all that the police can provide is the names of the three policemen stationed at Warren in 1930. On his death certificate his usual address is listed as Marthaguy Shire - fits as he would have been a transient labourer. There was no inquest into his death - very odd but I have been through the inquests for 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935 A to Z twice and he is not there. All names on his death certificate can be accounted for except one witness - Thomas George Watkinson. I have no idea who he is / was. He was not a land owner in Marthaguy Shire. He is not buried in Warren or the surrounding area, though there are Watkinsons buried in Warren and Nevertyre Cemetery they are not Thomas George. The death certificate was signed by the matron of Warren District Hospital - was there a doctor in the town? I cannot find copies of a local newspaper for Warren for 1930. Any hints as to what paper may have covered Warren in 1930. The accident is not mentioned in the Sydney Morning Herald. Does anyone have any thoughts on where else they may be details or information about this Uncle. His family know nothing - hence my search. Both parents were dead (father died a few months earlier in Sydney and was buried as a pauper) We believe that he had headed up to Mt Victoria in mid 1930 to wait for his brother to come from Qld. What he was doing in Warren we arent sure. He was born and raised in Nyngan and there may have been extended members of his mothers family in and around Warren but we arent sure. His older brother arrived in Mount Victoria in 1931 to find both his brother and father were dead. He never went to Warren himself though. (something he regretted until the day he died). Another brother (my father) was working in Byrock - but he didnt find out about his brothers death for years. Any thoughts anyone? Many Thanks Karen
