    3. Hi List I was interested in Rusheen's question as I have often wondered how my family made the journey from Wagga to Bourke when they established themselves there. Some of you may have reports of how your family travelled when they moved to another centre. Would the men have gone on horseback to check it out first? Did the women travel with the goods by cart, or did thy go by river, or on Cobb and Co? How long would it have taken. Where would they have stopped on the way? If anyone has stories they could share, I would love to hear them, just to get the sense of what it was like. Jill

    1. Travelling time Menindie to Wentworth/Birth Registration.
    2. Rusheen Craig
    3. How long would it have taken to travel from Menindie to Wentworth in 1860? My gg grandparents took the excess gear of the Burke and Wills Expedition near Arumpo and then followed them into Menindie where Ellen Byrnes gave birth to Garrett on 22 Dec 1860. At this stage Menindie consisted of a hotel and its kitchen, a store, and two aboriginal huts. Yet by 1 Jan 1861 Daniel had managed to register the birth of his son in Wentworth (Informant - Daniel Burns, Father). Did this have to be in person??? There were no police/authorities in Menindie, and no telegraph. Much as it might appear that there was a regular river service to Menindie and beyond, the boat, the Mulgawaakee, that had taken up part of the Burke and Wills Expedition at Tarcoola on 8th October 1860, was the first boat to have managed to navigate the river in two years. Well before Garrett's birth it would have been dispatched from Menindie by Burke to get much needed extra funds. The next question is - how long would it have taken Daniel to get back to Menindie? He had left a wife with a four year old son, a two and a half year old daughter, and a newborn. Little two and a half year old Ellen was burnt - 24 agonising hours later she died; it was the 10th January. Would Daniel have had time to return to the family by then? The inquest records for this period are missing. Regards ...................Rusheen.

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Goof Morning Everyone, Just a polite reminder that the correct way to unsubscribe from a Rootsweb mailing list is to send a message containing nothing except the word "unsubscribe", without the talkies, in the body of the message, to AUS-NSW-WEST-D-request@rootsweb.com if on Digest or AUS-NSW-WEST-L-request@rootsweb.com if on List mode Sending it to the address for posts does not work - the list-admin may do it manually, but it causes her to get grumpy, and a grumpy list-admin on a bad-hair day is something woeful to behold. It is also a little upsetting for people who get messages and even digests with nothing in them except your business that most of them know should have been done offlist. Regards Linda List-admin AUS-NSW-WEST <- having a bad hair day :)

I shall keep looking and I'll contact you when I have something further to write. I have found a Mona Josephine Duchatel nee Watson and her husband John C Duchatel (Son of Charles & Martha) were land holders at Griffith early 1900's and were also residents of White Cliffs. Harold Sykes was married to my grandmother's sister, Valerie May Berkholz. They married 1921, in BH. She was born 1898 in BH. Am unsure of Harold's birth but I'm sure he was a number of years older than Val. She died 1987, Sydney. Harold some years before. I'm sure I have it written down somewhere, but can't locate it now. I recall visiting them on the odd trip to Sydney as a child in the 60s. I know they retired to a a suburb near the airport as I recall watching aircraft take-off and land from their front porch. 5 minutes later: Just found a Berkholz family history written around 1980: It says that Harold died 1979 aged 96 years. Unsure of when they moved from BH, however in this family history he is described as a leading photographer of the city. I suppose given that Harold would have been around 38 when he married, that he'd have been at the Hill for some years before 1921. The family history also says that they moved to a property in the Windsor/Richmond area - presumably before moving to the location near the airport. I'd be interested in what you have - if there's anything to share.
