Mary Wilson is the expert on Menindee and the surrounding area. Referring to Maiden's Menindie/Menindee Hotel, she writes: "The hotel itself, came into the hands of the Maiden family before 1880, and the licence was held by that family until 1979." Starting as a grog shanty in the early 1850s, the hotel at Menindie was a well established building by the 1860 Burke and Wills' visit. In 1879 William Maiden was the first of the Maiden family to hold the license. He again held the license 1881-1885, and 1897 to at least 1900 (when I stopped copying the records). His brother George held the license in 1891. If the Maiden family held the license continuously from 1879, could somebody please tell me how the following licensees were related to the Maidens? 1879-1880 Edis Palmer (taking over from Maiden part way through the year). 1880-1881 Werribee (Weriba) Pyke. 1882 (part of) Henry H.Church. 1886-1890 John Hugh Gordon. 1892 Robert F.Welcome. Regards ...............Rusheen.

Whilst I am asking very dumb questions, I will ask some more and share a little information. Is there anyone with older family members in Warren or who were living in Warren in 1930? Or the Marthaguy Shire? Unfortunately I am still trying to track down information about an accident which occurred in Warren (or around there) just on Christmas in 1930. All material records for that period have totally evaporated. Police records prior to 1965 have been destroyed as have local newspapers for that period. I am hoping that perhaps some older folk may have a memory of the accident. Beryl did suggest a couple of months ago that I try the Police Gazette at the State Archives. Which I did - unfortunately there was no information regarding this uncle - but it certainly opened up a can of worms regarding his brother :-)) Turned out that his brother was arrested down near Gundagai for using a motor car without permission and for breaking and entering. Nobody in the family, not even his children, were aware of this indiscretion during his youth. If anyone is interested in persuing the Police Gazettes for information regarding criminal offences I do recommend it. Up to 1930 are on microfilm, and you can get access to others after then in their original paper form up to 70 years ago. Information is listed alphabetically and cross referenced by any alias. Also, many people charged and convicted have their photographs and physical description in the Gazette's. You need to look for these as they are appendixed separately to the Gazette - these photos create essentially a "mug" book for the police. We found details of the crime, where it was committed, how and when they were arrested and by whom. Other people involved in the crime. Where and when they were sentenced (also any previous convictions). Where they served their time and when they were released. If they were parolled (referred to as "by licence" back then) and if they were where they were given a train ticket to and the conditions of their parole. This was aside from the physical description and photograph, which were invaluable. An absolute goldmine of information. Of course we then had to tread carefully and break the news to his children as they had absolutely no idea, and it was a shock because it was so very out of character to the person they knew. Also many of his children and grandchildren were/are actually police officers. I am told that I may be able to get a copy of the transcript for his hearing from the local court where the trial was conducted. (Different record keeping policies to the police) I will let you know if I am successful. So a big thankyou Beryl - we didnt find what we were looking for, but we did find very valuable information about our family. Also is there anyone on the list that is associated with the Historical Society in Dubbo? I am trying to track down the original source for one of their publications. The society office is only open on days when I find it hard to phone, and I want to be tactful (and pleading) when I ask which is hard to do in a letter. Many thanks Chris and Tony - and I need to apologise it isn't Forbes it is Parkes (blaming old age for the lapse, which is no excuse I should have double checked) It is a Catholic priest, The Right Reverend. Monsignor John Moran, VG (Vicar General) Born in Cahireiveen, Kerry, Eire on 8th November 1874 Died 30th January 1942 in Parkes. He was in Broken Hill 1901 - 1902 Hay 1902 - 1905 Nyngan 1905 - 1931 Parkes 1931 - 1942 He is buried at the Parkes Cemetery Priests Plot We are not related to Father Moran, however he played a very large in the part of the lives of my family in Nyngan. Hence my interest. I do have a photocopy of his funeral service card and the records of his service from the Diocese of Wilcannia. Plus photocopies of a photograph of his grave (not readable), one from his funeral service (not very good). The small photo on his service card is the best one - but I would appreciate any scan of a photo of him as opposed to a photocopy. I would also dearly love to know who the executor was for his personal matters. As a priest there was no deceased estate packet (I presume because he had no property of value). However he was the executor/administrator of a trust related to my family and I would like to know who took that over after his death. The Diocese cannot tell me, I am however engaging a solicitor (I think) to follow up on this issue for me. Still weighing up the pro's and con's of getting to the bottom of a great family mystery :-)) Many thanks again to anyone who can help in this meandering for our family tree Karen researching Schuler, Reed, Miller, Jones, Carrick and Leahy in NSW West

Bill, No, I'm afraid this on is too late - by that time Sarah had married her second husband Frederick Westmore. I'm starting to wonder if she actually did get married at all. Was divorce possible in those days? I gather it would have been "not the done thing", but I suppose it is an option I should be looking at too. Not sure how I would find any record of such a thing at Wilcannia/Menindee - any ideas. Hi everyone. Anyone out there connected to the Blackman Families of Bathurst and Mudgee areas. Barnes Family of Forbes. Maybe I'm not far enough in west NSW. Marg C.
Teryawinia is a creek that is on the Eastern Side of the Darling River , Somewhere near the towns of Wilcannia and Menindee. I believe it runs off the Talyawalka Creek , which leaves the Darling above Wilcannia , which is actually an ana branch of the Darling River, and enters back into the Darling river, somewhere near Menindee. I have fished and Caught Yabbies in both of these creek as a child , but that was a very long time ago. Weinteriga Station is a Station on the Darling River between Wilcannia and Menindee, The last I heard of that station was that the Aborigines were placing a land claim over it. I do not know if it ever succeeded. I believe that Teryawinia Creek enters the Darling River at Weinteriga Station. I spent a lot of time in the area between 1940 and 1960 , then I came top South Australia, so the memory has dimmed a little. billsymo@bigpond.net.au www.users.bigpond.com/bill_symo.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edmiston & Taylor" <et.mob@bigpond.com> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 19, 2004 4:15 PM Subject: [NSW-W] William HANCOCK / Sarah DIXON - Teryawinia via Menindee c1883 > I am interested in this couple who had possibly four children, the last being Elizabeth Louisa HANCOCK born Teryawinia 1883.
Is this the one you are looking for.....looks like it to me HANCOCK WILLIAM F. Married , Brigitte D Dixon Forbes NSW 1898 reg. no. 959 NSW BDM CD. Sarah is probably a nick name. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edmiston & Taylor" <et.mob@bigpond.com> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 19, 2004 4:15 PM Subject: [NSW-W] William HANCOCK / Sarah DIXON - Teryawinia via Menindee c1883 > I am interested in this couple who had possibly four children, the last being Elizabeth Louisa HANCOCK born Teryawinia 1883.
I am interested in this couple who had possibly four children, the last being Elizabeth Louisa HANCOCK born Teryawinia 1883. William, born in Dublin, IRL, listed his occupation as "trapper". By 1888 Sarah had married again in Wilcannia to Frederick Linton WESTMORE, yet William HANCOCK apparently appears on some databases in this site variously as an 1887 Property Holder (Weinteriga) and as a Refused Homestead Lease 1899 (Wilcannia, Co Woore, Par Cathkin). I have been unable to find a marriage record for this HANCOCK / DIXON couple which, according to Elizabeth's birth certification, supposedly took place in Victoria 27th July 1877. My particular interest is Sarah (my great grandmother by her second marriage), but nothing much is known of her early life or first marriage and how she and William separated (it was always presumed, apparently incorrectly, that he died prematurely). Any information on William HANCOCK, Sarah DIXON (DICKSON) and where/what was Teryawinia would be exciting. Similarly any information on Sarah's life in Wilcannia with her second husband over the period 1888-1897 where he variously listed his occupation as a Musician, Labourer and Baker would be invaluable. Two of Frederick and Sarah's children died at a young age and are buried at Wilcannia. I would be very interested in any background information on Teryawinia and Wilcannia circa 1880-1900 too. I am happy to pass on any information I might have that would be useful to others. Bruce Taylor
Hi Pat My grandfather is Jack Clarence Elliss. I and a few other family members have a huge amount of information on the Elliss./Ellis family. We know that George married May Ann Mariott and we think that their parents are John Ellis and Mary Austin and that George has a sister Emma, which is obviously your Emma. Please get back to me because we are descendants of George and Mary Ann, we have most of this branch but are now looking for their ancestors. Dear Jill An excellent source for this sort of information which often gives times, costs etc are the old Directories such as Sands or Grevilles. Usually such information is either at the beginning or the end or before each township listing. Many are available on microfiche and more becoming available on the web or CD. Another lister may be more specific. Like wise I have a widow Mary Keating travelling from Pipe Clay creek near Mudgee by bullock wagon to "Leaholme" Coonamble. From the daughter Margaret's marriage in 1888 in Coonamble indicates they arrived prior to this year. Kitty Wilson of Quambone believes it was the mid 1880s.
