Hello Jill, I joined this list only recently and - until your message today - had concluded that it must be defunct! Glad to know there's still someone out there. In this area I'm particularly interested in STEPHENSON (also Stevenson), ROOK, COX, WRIGHT, BRANDT, TOWERS, LUCAS, and will be glad to hear from anyone with possible connections. Elaine (Aussie, now living in Ireland) Rook, Saisell/Saysell, Clarke, Stephenson/Stevenson, Cuthbertson, Cox, Wright, Wisby, Lucas, Brandt, Towers, Opie, Tulau, Helm, Cross. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nelson & Livingstone" <panjil@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 02, 2005 12:13 AM Subject: [NSW-W] Let's start posting > Hi everyone > > This list has been exceptionally quiet over the last few months. Happy New Year to All, Thank you to everyone who has helped me with my queries throughout the year. I have updated my site, especially the Menindee Cemetery. There will be further updates when my Cemetery Identification Program is finished in the New Year. The plaques are now being engraved in Adelaide. I will include the extra information on my other cemetery lists in the future, starting with Wilcannia Best wishes Mary Wilson http://members.iinet.net.au/~mewilson
I gave my cousin and myself a different sort of Christmas present this year - we travelled to Nyngan and Warren to do some family history research. My cousin in Melbourne decided to visit me for Christmas this year so on the spur of the moment I tossed her into a car and travelled up to Nyngan :-) What an absolutely wonderful time we had!!!! Everyone without exception was so friendly and helpful despite the fact that Christmas was so close. We learnt so much, things that we would never have learnt any other way. We visited the cemetery of course and also some of the older residents in the Hostel. As a result we had many tripping down memory lane and sharing memories that are so precious. For example we heard the story of Nancy's mother and my grandmother arguing over the fence because my uncle had broken her prized geranium. Stories like that are never in any official record but they are so precious. We were able to stop and take photographs of houses that my father and grandparents lived in - many of them still standing and in much the same condition!!! (eg original windows and doors) Often the current owners would invite us in to have a look around. It was amazing to actually walk the same floor boards that my father walked over 70 years ago!!! The museum was closed for the holidays but when one of the volunteers learnt we were in town they volunteered to make a special trip in and open it up for us!! Current property owners were more than willing to unlock gates and allow us to go and visit the land my grandfather once worked and owned in the 1800's. People were more than willing to tell us who we should talk to because they "might remember" something. And when we shared names they would tell us if any descendents may still be living and where (often they wouldnt have a clue of the adddress it was things like - "oh that would be old Boots - he lives down in Warren Street - about 2 doors from the shop on the corner") And when we visited "Boots" sure enough it turned out he was a cousin and more than happy to share family stories and lineage and even offered to try and find some old photographs and memorabilia that hadnt been destroyed in the floods. On one occasion we were even able to link two families in town who didn't realise that they were cousins!!! We learnt that one of my Aunts owned a boarding house which we hadnt known beforehand and that her daughter who we had lost touch with and couldnt find is frequent visitor to Nyngan. All in all it was a truly magical time and I would recommend it to anyone - I only urge you to do it NOW. The only sad thing that happened was when we learnt that some of the people who could have helped died only a year or so ago. Another thing that we learnt was to back up everything - so much of Nyngans tangible history was lost in the floods and it was a reminder that such disasters could destroy memories and precious records at any time. So now for the next few weeks I dare say I will be documenting all that we learnt and following new leads. Also those with Nyngan ties may like to know that there is a Nyngan Reunion scheduled for April 2005. I am certainly going to try and attend and when I get the exact details I will share them with everyone. I hope all have had a safe and happy Christmas Karen Granddaughter of Peter Schuler, Florence Reed (Reid) and Mary Ann Carrick.
Hi Everyone, This is just a quick apology as if you have used Rusheen's excellent Hotels Lists since I announced them, and relied on the Search Engine ... ummmmmmm ... it wasn't updated. So you might have thought there was nothing there. The Search Engine is now updated, and can be found on: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/Hotels/index.html There are still heaps of uploads to go (ie notes on hotels from N-Z), but they will be some time away now - maybe Sunday???? Cheers Linda List-admin AUS-NSW-WEST/CENTRAL
Hi Everyone, As work on the next part of the hotels progresses, Notes on Individual Hotels D-M have been uploaded (although it still awaits links from the Publicans page). If you want an interesting read, you can either go in from the link on the directory index (where there is a search engine) at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/Hotels/ or go direct to it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/Hotels/individual-hotels-D-M.html As part of this process I have found Rusheen's link to the Wentworth Shire Heritage Study most interesting. The schedule is at http://www.wentworth.nsw.gov.au/docs/heritage/appendix5.asp with plenty of links to individual places. The full report can be found at http://www.wentworth.nsw.gov.au/docs/heritage/ and if you go down the contents, the Thematic History of the Shire is quite useful. Thanks Rusheen!!!!! I am looking for any information on Richard Coverdale who I believe spent some time in the Ivanhoe area in the 1840's. According to family history "he was one of only three free men in that locality" at that time. He then went to the Geelong area where he was married in 1844 to Susannah Johnstone. His brother George may have been with him. Thank you to anyone who may have some information. Marion
Hi Elaine My CHEW line came from Bath, England. Thank you for keeping it in mind, though. Maria Thomas Lake Munmorah NSW, Australia
Hi Raylene Many thanks for the info, it certainly has expanded my knowledge on a line I have only done a little research on. Can you tell me the title of the book? And do you know if it is still available and where? Again many thanks for your generosity Maria Thomas Lake Munmorah NSW, Australia
Hi, just wondering if you got the photocopied material I sent and if it was of any use Raylene ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maria & Mick Thomas" <m_m_th@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2004 9:07 PM Subject: [NSW-W] CHEW FAMILY > Hi everyone > I'm new to this list and unsure if it covers the area of Young and Cowra. > > If it does cover these towns I would love to make contact with anyone that has CHEW in their family tree > > Maria Thomas > Lake Munmorah > NSW, Australia > > > > > ==== AUS-NSW-WEST Mailing List ==== > The Home Page for this List is at > http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ >
Maria, Do your CHEW ancestors have a connection with Ireland? The reason I ask this is because on today's Galway list: IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com, Julie Claydon lists one of her ancestors as having married a Chew in Oughterard, County Galway. Sylvia Mary Shakerley's second husband was Frank Derek CHEW (m. January 17th, 1942). Just wondering....... HI, I hope this is virus free, my computer sometimes mucks up and I have wondered if it could be a virus. I am putting together a pioneers register of the Hillston area pre 1900. The area is Hillston to Lake Cargelligo, Condobolin and West to Ivanhoe. The register will be developed over the next 12 months and hopefully ready for sometype of publishing in early 2006. Any info on people or places in this region would be so appreciated. Raylene - emailslade@bigpond.com
Hungerford pictures were mentioned in a recent post, and while I don't have any old ones, I happened to be up there last year so I thought I'd post a link to some photos I took while there for anyone who might like to see a bit of the town as it is now. Jim. http://www.pbase.com/jhfaust/hungerford
My anti virus said your attachment was unsafe and removed it from my mailbox. Can you send the info in another format please? Hi everyone I'm new to this list and unsure if it covers the area of Young and Cowra. If it does cover these towns I would love to make contact with anyone that has CHEW in their family tree Maria Thomas Lake Munmorah NSW, Australia
To celebrate 150 years since the first Cobb & Co coaches started, the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday had a 3 page article about their route. This is on http://www.smh.com.au/travel/ However, if people like Jill would like to see the pictures of Toorale, the old Byrock change station, Royal Mail Hotel at Hungerford and Tattersalls Hotel Barringun, they would have to go to the newspaper itself. Regards .........Rusheen.

If anyone is interested please contact me at emailslade@bigpond.com for a register form. This process will be a while in the making so if you know of any others who would be interested please let me know. Possible date of completion will be early 2006 Raylene Hillston
