Hi List, One of my enduring interests is photographers, especially travelling photographers on the Darling River. Not that I know much about them. But I presume they travelled on the steamers. When I look at some of my family photos I find them set up with temporary props in the background made from logs, and gravel underfoot. While, at a certian period, photographers had logs and stuffed owls in studios, they rarely went to the trouble of having gravel. So they are a monty for travelling photographers. The main one I know of is Henry Stephens who I think was based in Wentworth. Another who interests me is W.D. Thrower, who was at Wilcannia and then later in my Gippsland, Victoria area at Warragul. I am unsure if Thrower actually travelled. Does anyone know anything about these photographers, or any others who travelled on the Darling River steamers??? Or can anyone name any local photographers with exact dates they operated. I am happy to give them a page on the NSWW web site. It can always help someone else date photos. Hello Linda and listers, I have just had a look at the web-site - what a great idea! Well done, Linda and the deputy. My interests are fairly narrow:- George Frederick EDKINS = Elizabeth Ann DALTON Lived in Broken Hill, and had about 7 offspring, 1880-1904 Any info appreciated - would not refuse data on any other Edkins known to listers! Best Wishes Peter Vic
Hi List, I am delighted to announce that, due to the hard work of The Deputy, we now have a web site up and running for the List. To check it out, go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ Several of the pages are Under Construction, and will rely on interested people taking the opportunity to advertise organisations on the site, or make information available in a more concrete form. However the surnames listing, in particular, is ready to run. I am happy to discuss off-list any way in which other information can be added. I am also Listowner for AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND, which has a web site at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ This may give you some idea of the types of information which can be added to a web site if people are prepared to make it available. Thanks again to The Dep. Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia e-mail [email protected] Listowner AUS-NSW-WEST http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/
Hi Would like to add my appreciation to Linda for starting up this mailing list. My interest in Western NSW is as follows: William Frederick STANBURY (1851-1918) m. 1877 Hannah OLDMAN in Bourke NSW. They had eight children : Harrie Chester b. 1878 Bourke Zilla Grace b. 1880 Wilcannia m. George WALLACE Violette b. 1882 Wilcannia Ida Darling b. 1884 Reid St Wilcannia Eva Mary Wilcannia b. 1887 Reid St Wilcannia Edith Netallie b. 1889 Reid St Wilcannia Charles Wentworth b.1891 Reid St Wilcannia m. Matilda Jane CHARD (my grandparents) Arthur William John b.1893 Reid St Wilcannia m. Bertha WILLS It would appear from the childrens middle names that William and Hannah had a great love of the Western district. William Frederick STANBURY, according to family legend, was the Town Clerk and also the Mayor of Wilcannia. His occupation is listed as Cordial Manufacturer and he is buried at White Cliffs. An historian from White Cliffs seems to remember seeing a story about William Frederick being jailed over a robbery committed with a Jack Burgess in the early 1900's. Have not been able to get to the National Library to confirm these stories as yet. Would love to hear from any one researching this family, or anyone who may be able to confirm the above stories. Hi Can anyone help me with Either an Obituary for 1964. Or Funeral Directors in Wagga in 1964. I need to chase up information on Beatrice Verna May (Mosely / Moseley, not sure of spelling.) I know she is buried in Wagga Wagga Cemetery but because of the fire that distroyed records I need to find Either her Funeral director or Obituary. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Julie.

Hello again Linda Thank you for starting up a list for this area of NSW. I had lots of ancestors here. Initially I am researching the station near Balranald named YANGA. Conflicting stories say it was started by Dr Charles Nicholson or W C Wentworth approx 1842. I would like to learn anything at all about Yanga and it's recent or old history. I do have several books in which it features and also few newspaper articles. I'm happy to share what I do already know with anyone else interested. It's a very large station so must have employed many people over the years. Regards Lori

Hi My interests are with the Sibley and Grose families around the Broken Hill area. I have been told that Henry Sibley was a Mason in Broken Hill and there was at one stage a photo of him hanging in the Lodge. Does anyone know if it is possible to get information about his time in the Masons or possibly a copy of the photo. Any information on these families appreciated. TIA Michele

Thank you, Linda for this list. My name is John SHEAHAN. I'm a teacher in Wagga Wagga. My genealogical interest in this list concerns the CARTER family. James, wife Jane, 6 daughters and, finally perhaps!, young James, arrived in Sydney in 1845 aboard the "Comet" from England via NZ. James married Ann NOY in 1866 at Yacandah. (That's as close as I can get from the certificate.) They settled where "Brenda" station now is, right up towards the Qld border, not all that far from Goodooga. Their children are registered in Walgett, Dirranbandi (Qld) and Currawillingai(?- certificate indistinct). James had a pub there at first, while he also selected around it - if family lore is correct. Stories suggest life was pretty tough. Later, he took up stations just across the border; there are descendents still there. James was into horse racing apparently. My daughter, when she turns 21, will inherit the Lady's Bracelet won by his horse "Canadian", ridden by Dick Skuthorpe (?), possibly in Brewarrina. There is more, but I've rabbited on enough already. I have some questions - if anyone can assist I'd be grateful : 1. Where is YACANDAH? Or have I got the spelling wrong? 2. Where is CURRAWILLINGAI? Or, again, is that spelling inaccurate? 3. Is there a resource on the settlement of this region? 4. Finally, the real long-shot - Does anyone know of a way to locate the race mentioned above? Also, if anyone connects to any of this, please contact me. I look forward to the postings from this list. Hi Everyone, I am researching the Mclean Family. I have Archie McLean, Station Manager for Kidman. He came from Somewhere but I cannot find his Birth. He was born 22-June 1872-1875. Any help with someone out there with a missing sibling I would appreciate it. All we know is his father was John and He was taught by a governess so I would say his father was on stations as well. Later he worked in Qld before joining Kidman. So hopefully someone might have some knowledge on this family. many thanks Julie, Townsville.Qld.
Hello there, pleased to see that this list is up and running. I live in Dareton NSW, some 17 km west of Wentworth, on the Murray River, (and 103 km SSW of "The Port"). Just wish to register my interest in the LAMBERT and/or BRADSHAW family names. My wif'e's GGrandfather was Frederick John LAMBERT (b 1852 Sydney NSW d 1912 Broken Hill NSW) who married at Gol Gol NSW 1882, Eugenie Matilda BRADSHAW (b 1858 Mt Beckwith VIC d ???). Sometime after the birth of their 5th child William Burrows LAMBERT (b 1888 Hallet SA d 1890?), Eugenie and Frederick separated. Eugenie then has a further eight children, all births registered with the surname LAMBERT and in Wilcannia NSW, with the father unknown. (An older fanily member suggested that the father had the surname KENNEDY??). These children were William (b 1891 - d 1891?); Lena (b 1892 - d ?); Walter G (b 1893 - d 1894); Hilda (b 1894 - d?); Richard L (b1896 - d 1896); Mildred (b 1897 - d 1897); George (b 1898 - d 1898) and Dalis Y (b 1899 - d ?). We have been unable to find death records for Eugenie and three of the children from this second relationship; Lena, Hilda and Dalis Y. Hoping someone out there can help out. Mal Williams
Hello fellow listers My main interests on this List come from around the Bourke district of NSW, but also cover the area and settlements along the northern border of NSW with Qld from the late 1870s to 1920s when most of the families died out or shifted away. If anyone has any historical knowledge of Bourke in its hey-day when the Darling River was used to transport wool etc down to Adelaide, I'd love to know about it. Also researching Horn, Deitz around Mudgee, NSW from 1858 to 1900s. Good hunting to you all. Jac
I am looking for a George PARKER who went to Australia abt 1860 raised a second family one of which we have a letter from. They were living in Footscray a suburb of Melbourne in 1889. George would be my ggrandfather. Seldon Parker, Oakwood, ON. ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Barraclough To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 4:29 AM Subject: [NSW-W] Introductions Hi Westies This is just to let everyone know that there are now about fourteen of us on the list, so I thought it was time to start introductions. :) My name is Linda Barraclough, and I have been running AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND, a large Victorian regional list, for about a year. Trouble is, my family isn't from there, my father's family has been all along the Darling River since the 1870s, so I thought I would start a list for there. Problem is, the suggestion was no-one overseas would relate to "Darling River", so I should go for "West". It is really hard to know though, where "west" starts. At this stage I have said Nyngan, because I wanted to go as far east as Brewarrina, to stick with the river. However I realise Dubbo is also "west". I am hoping, optimistically, that someone might like to start a "Central West" or "Central" somewhere along the line. From experience, to go from the SA border to meet ORANGEBATHURST will create far too big an area. So if anyone out there has always had a yen to create a list, please feel free to step forward. But, having said that, until someone gets a list up and running for that area, possibly people might like to find a home on the "west" list. Everyone is certainly most welcome - please feel free to introduce yourself, and tell us all where your western interests lie. In a couple of weeks I hope to have a webpage up and running for the list. Problem is you will meet the Deputy on this list soon, who does all that sort of thing. He is creating a new page for his new list, AUS-VIC-NE, and is going to get that up and running before he goes west.
