    1. [NSW-W] LEWIS P. GREEN
    2. Robyn Clarke
    3. Hello, First timer, Looking for records of an American, Lewis Perrine Green, who was living in the HAY area around 1894 aged about 61 yrs. He had a wife, Sarah Jane and 5 children all living at that time in Melbourne after spending their earlier years in the Victorian goldfields where he had been a miner, storekeeper, mine manager, mine speculator and sawyer. His parents were Samuel Green, farmer, and Mary Perrine Green of New Jersey. I have all the records of the family except Lewis P. Green. No death certificate registered anywhere. Would anyone know of his name in the HAY area. Thanks, Robyn Clarke

    1. [NSW-W] orphanage details
    2. Lorraine Purcell
    3. I have been able to assist a couple of listers lately with details from the following book. I thought I may as well publish the details for the interest of all. In a book published in Nov 1999 entitled "A piece of the Story" which is a National Directory of Records of Catholic Organisations caring for children separated from families, there is a state by state listing of Catholic groups who have cared for orphans and other children who were removed from their families for any reason. It is a fairly comprehensive book, which gives a brief description of the organization, the Location, Church organization, years of operation, type of service, sex and ages of children, a contact address & phone no, as well as access to records and the type of records kept. The appendices also have a good list of addresses for people searching state records for adoption details etc. I am not sure where it can be purchased but it is published by the Australian Catholic Social Welfare Commission. Enquires should be made to the National Director, ACSWC. PO Box 326, Curtin, ACT Australia 2605 (email: [email protected]) We have it in our local library in Sydney. Good Luck Cheers Lorraine Searching HENNESSY, RYAN, DAWSON, MOY, FITZGERALD, GAYNON (or GANNON) all from Tipperary around 1850s. Settled Camden, Cowra, Raymond Terrace, Hill End, Wellington, NSW

    2. Juliette Hendry
    3. Dear Louise, Thank you for the Delaney information: we had been hoping we had met a new cousin but unless they were connected in the old country it doesn't look like it. Col's Michael Delaney was born in Kilkenny and came out 1832 as a convict. I've put some of his info up on: The Hendry, Delaney, Cooper & Upton History Pages http://www.angelfire.com/bc/chendry/index.New.html Many thanks for your reply, regards Juliette

    1. [NSW-W] River Boats
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, I have just been updating the Paddle Steamers page on the AUS-NSW-WEST website. Lori has sent me a humungous heap of boats, and they are so fascinating I just had to post a couple here that she sent. The rest can be seen by going to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ and from there to Paddle Steamers. Thanks Lori Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia e-mail [email protected] Listowner AUS-NSW-WEST http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ ========================================= The paddle steamers could only run about 8 months of the year - the Darling depended on the unpredictable rainfall in Queensland. Consequently the Darling was either in flood or drought. Barges on the Darling were towed by a short line of about 50 feet long because of the many bends in the river. JANE ELIZA - had the longest trip ever recorded when she took 3 years to go from Goolwa to Bourke during a drought. At Bourke the floodwaters came and it took only two weeks for her to return to Goolwa towing 3 barges of wool. THE TARELLA - built specifically for the Darling trade 1897, a passenger steamer capacity 20 passengers. She was lit by electricity which was making great changes along the Darling and other rivers. Imagine the sight of an electricly lit steamer who's light could be seen for miles, as opposed to the oil lamp, as the steamers made their way up river. Due to the strength of the Darling flow, steamers were only allowed to go up river at night time - not down river. Some skippers would disobey the rules, of course. In 1918 The Tarella, with her deckhouses changed from her passenger carrying days, now carried wool and wheat from the Darling, M/bidgee & Murray to Goolwa SA. THE ARIEL - steamed up the Darling in a flood in 1870 - water went down and she was left high and dry - miles away from the actual river. One steamer was found some 60 miles away from the river when flood waters receded. The Ariel was later rebuilt as the Kelvin. STURT - Sank at Brewarrina Rapids with a travelling theatrical company on board - no casualties. THE WAVE - skipper Lloyd Surry boasted he would carry anything. He had a travelling circus on board going from Brewarrina to Bourke when the Wave sank . Imagine all the animals ( lions tigers elephants etc ) swimming in the Darling! THE VEGA - barge Vega was towed by the Invincible for much of her career. In 1956 she was towed by the Success up the Darling to flood bound Para Station to pick up a cargo of wool. Value of wool 75k pounds! All went well until they got back to the Murray before Mildura. The engine of Success broke down and the flood current took Success, Vega and cargo (320 tons) down stream out of control. The Vega crashed into a flooded tree and tore it out of the ground. Both vessels smashed into other trees until eventually were held fast by still more trees. The engine was repaired and they again set off for Mildura. Only 3 bales of wool were damaged! THE WANNERA - began her life as a barge in 1900 at Echuca and named TP for Thomas Permewan of Permewan Wright & Co - the largest ship owner on the rivers. In 1911 she was converted to a steamer. She was one of the last boats to go up the Darling to Wilcannia. BUMBOATS - many people had small hand driven side-wheelers known as 'bumboats' - the occupants turned the paddle wheel by a crankshaft. These little craft were used on the rivers by fishermen, shearers, hawkers, tinkers, travelling photographers and others. These were the fore-runners of the modern houseboats which can be hired by holiday makers along the rivers today. PS RODNEY - carried non union shearers during the shearers strike 1894. Unionists set fire to her at Moonara Station on the Darling. The Pride of the Murray and the Trafalgar also carried non-union shearers. The Pride of the Murray brought the prisoners from Wentworth Jail to Albury - 850 miles. JHP - launched 1866 sank between Hay and Balranald Oct 1868. Raised and sank twice more. Dismantled in 1879. Other steamers on the Darling and M/bidgee ( & the Murray): Pevensey, Invincible, Tolarno, Canally, Gemini, Wandering Jew, Jandra, Hero, Mannum, Ruby, Marion, Kookaburra, Pyap, Maggie, Corrong with the barge Pelican, Enterprise (both mostly M/bidgee ). Moira, Fairy.

    1. [NSW-W] Name of Bourke Newspaper
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Jill, whose e-mail is [email protected] has posted the query that appears below to GENANZ. My great aunt Ida (aged 6) was accidently killed while attending a Children's Picnic at Bourke NSW on 15th August, 1888 along with two other little children. Now, I have the "newspaper report" on the accident, but the actual first part of the newspaper name is missing, it was reported in :- " ? RIVER ADVOCATE", on Saturday August 18th, 1888. As I am attaching this report into my family records, I require the full name of the newspaper, to quote my source. I was hoping someone from Bourke area of NSW may reply and assist me (even the Newspaper itself, presuming they still have one) ========================================= I have looked at my "Union List of Newspapers held in Australian Libraries", and cannot find one that fits. I have also looked under Wilcannia etc. Now, granted it is a 1975 Union List, and old newspapers are still being discovered ..... Someone else posted to GENANZ saying it was the Darling River Advocate, but I don't know if they were just guessing. The names and dates I have listed for Bourke Newspapers are: Bourke Banner and Darling River Representative (1899?-1923) Central Australian and Bourke Telegraph 1870-1890? Western Herald est 1887 (and apparently still going) So does anyone else have any knowledge of a Darling River Advocate in 1888??? 3. Hi List, This is just to let you know that, by courtesy of Lori, we now have a new parton the Westies Home Page which is a history of Yanga Station, east of Balranald. It was so good, it caused me to add a new section to the site called "Library", just in case anyone else has research like that that they would like to share in the hope someone else may read it and be able to help with more details. To access it, just go to the Home page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ and from there to "Library" And, while you are there, you might like to check out the new additions to the Surnames Under Research page.
