Hi List I am a new subscriber and wonder if there is a SKS who has access to the old newspapers in Grenfell? I would greatly appreciate a lookup of a tragedy which occurred in Grenfell on 16 April 1917 which involved a house fire at "Belara" Caragabal where the three children of William and Violet SIM were burnt to death. Kindly advise where I might obtain copies of any newspaper articles. TIA Chris
Hi Everybody. I have found the following entry in the NSW Pioneer Index. 1788 - 1888. Branchett John. Died 1880. Age 72. Parkes. 1880. 6636. Any advise on where to access the Burial Records or other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Should their be any Branchetts still living in the wonderful West I have a possible descendant who would like to make contact. Best Wishes Arthur Chittenden Sunny but Cold Sydney.

Hi List, According to my copy of "Newspapers in Australian Libraries: a union list: part 2 Australian newspapers" 3rd Edn, 1975 (but still very useful) Brewarrina The Brewarrina News started in 1878, and was still running in 1975. Copies are only held by the editor of the Brewarrina News from 1968 onwards. So I would have to say that, given the one that appears below, it may not have lasted long after 1878 and appears to have been resumed around 1958. Copies however are only held at the Mitchell Library in Sydney from 1958 and in the University of New England Library from 1968. The Brewarrina Times and Barwon River Gazette began in 1880. The National Library of NSW, Sydney (this appears to be different to the Mitchell ???) holds copies 1898-1904, Jan - Dec 1907. It was "resumed after a lapse" in 1949. I am unsure if it was still operating in 1975. Hope this helps Linda Barraclough Briagolong, Victoria, Australia List Owner: AUS-NSW-WEST email: [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/
Hi Navi Brewarrina Historical Society lost a lot of its records when the Town Hall burnt down in the 1970's. You could put your request on the Bourke site and there may be someone from Bre who will see it and be able to answer your question. www.lisp.com.au/~michael/index.html Margaret Perth Western Australia [email protected] > Dear Listers, > > My Great grandfather John Northey ran a newspaper in Brewarrina with another > business partner. Navi, I have been led to believe that the State Library of NSW holds microfiche of a lot of newspapers going back years. It may be worth a try ! GLGH regards Jennifer
Dear Listers, My Great grandfather John Northey ran a newspaper in Brewarrina with another business partner. This was around 1890 to 1897. Apparently the premises for the newspaper were burnt down in 1896 or 7. Also there was some dispute between John Northey and his business partner. In 1895 John Northey married Ellen O'Neill in Brewarrina and they had their first son John Northey Jnr there. By 1897 they had moved to Western Australia to start over again. What I would like to find out is whether there are archives in Brewarrina or somewhere else in NSW of newspapers from the 1890s. I would like to find out more about the newspaper my great grandfather owned and what it was called. Thanks for any information you have to offer. Regards, Navi Blight
Hi Everybody My name is Arthur Chittenden and I am trying to find information re; the above listed surname, for a friend living in Canada. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Best Wishes Arthur Sunny but Mild Sydney.
Hello List, Is anyone familiar with Yanko Station, Jerilderie? Also, does anyone have any connection to the name Wolstenholme, Matthews or James?. Any information would be most appreciated. Selena
Hi Linda, Yes, I guess my first message was a bit short on details - that's what comes of trying to do a dozen things at once. Fowler's Gap is about 110 K from Broken Hill on the Tibooburra Rd. I am guessing that any info I find will be from personal stories or memories because I haven't been able to locate anything "official" - probably because of the de-licencing. Apparently my Grandparents were there when my father was a child so I am guessing it would be late 30's, early 40s. I think Grandmothers parents were there also, Samuel and Eliza Jane THOMAS (nee COCK). That's about all I have managed to discover so far. Hello Lee, My best suggestion would be for you to contact Jenny at the Broken Hill Family History Group, they are situated in the Library, Blende St., Broken Hill. Jenny is a "mine of information" (very appropriate for Broken Hill) and she is always willing to assist in any way. Other than that, I would be quite willing to help in any way, I usually manage to get to the group about once a fortnight. Let me know if you'd like me to search out some info for you. Hi Heather, Sorry I can't help you with your querry, even though I am a ROBINSON. My lot came into Melbourne and spent their time in the inner suburbs - Collingwood. I was wondering if you might be able to suggest any resources that might be able to help me trace my grandfather, Charles Christopher RITCHIE who was in Broken Hill in the early 1920s. I know he was a Freemason in Broken Hill c1920 and described himself as a commercial traveller. I have written to the Broken Hill chapter of the Freemasons but I am not overly hopeful of receiving a reply as it has been some months. I have no idea of where he lived while in Broken Hill or who he worked for. His first wife died 19-11-1919 but I cannot find this death in NSW so I presume he was not in Broken Hill at this time. He married my grandmother in Melbourne in 1925 so was definitely out of Broken Hill by then and I know they never returned. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Ummm, Hi Heather. Welcome to the list. Where exactly is Fowler's Gap? It is mentioned in "Tibooburra: Corner Country", by John Geritson as delicenced in 1933, with licensee then Charles Rosenius.
