    1. [NSW-W] Major Announcement - Hotels and Publicans
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Greetings List THIS IS A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT I have just uploaded Rusheen Craig's latest contribution to research in the area of Hotel Licences in the Western NSW area. You can find a link off: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/ or go direct to the directory in which they are housed at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/Hotels/index.html Many of you will be familiar with Rusheen's work on Homestead Leases (there is also a link off the first page above), and this is just as huge and wonderful. I am still uploading some of the support material, which will continue to be uploaded over the next few weeks - but all the actual licence details are there. Thank you very much Rusheen, on behalf of everyone, and thanks to peter (the Deputy on this List), for all the work on the tables and formatting. Not a bad Christmas present! 2. Nelson & Livingstone
    3. Hi Alison I have to say from my experience, the best site is : www.google.com and just type in what you are after e.g. war records australia. It just seems to hit the spot every time. After that I'd nominate Tony Moore's suggestion: www.bdm.nsw.gov.au I have spent hours on this site putting in all sorts of different spellings of names and have managed to deduce family trees which I have then verified through newspaper death notices or sometimes paying a transcription agent to get the record. This site is such a good resource and it's free. Terrific. Some others which I have used are http://www.standard.net.au/~jwilliams/electrol.htm http://www.angelfire.com/ns/aust/ http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/NSWW/index.html#properties http://winsoft.net.au/~cobbco/Menu.html http://helplist.org/aus/index.shtml#Wales http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hcastle/grevilles/lists/abc.html http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/pmap/ http://addison.homedns.org/projects/grevilles/atoz/namesatoz.htm http://www.judywebster.gil.com.au/other.html http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/ www.ihr.com.au Happy surfing Jill

    3. Harold and Alison, A few items dredged from NSW indexes that may or may not fit with your request. A James B ROWE died 1934 New Lambton (Newcastle) 1934 father Thomas mother Mary. His death certificate bought via one of the agents might be useful. If this is the father of the 7 children born in Wilcannia and Broken Hill then perhaps the following marriages belong to some of the children. Note all seven births seem to have been registered in Wilcannia where William's death in 1890 was also registered. Mary E death was registered in Broken Hill South.in 1906. Bessie F ROWE mar Frank JARRETT 1929 New Lambton Thomas R mar Alma A BAILEY 1920 New Lambton George Courtney ROWE mar Ruby Iris DISCOMBE 1942 Wyong which in the 1940s was still only an hour by road or train from New Lambton There were many Broken Hill families moved to Newcastle in depression years either for mining, steel works or railways.I can name a few in my immediate family who made this move and also happened to settle in New Lambton. There are also many ROWE families based in Broken Hill. For example there are 44 deaths in Broken Hill in the indexes 1889 - 1918 for people with the Rowe surname as well as two in Broken Hill South and two in Wilcannia. There was a Retallick was a mayor of Broken Hill I think back in early years. David Central Coast NSW not far from Wyong, formerly of New Lambton and Broken Hill. ----- Original Message ----- Subject: [NSW-W] Help re internet sources please > Dear Listers > I have had an email from an elderly ex-missionary living in Thailand who has > recently been introduced to the joys of the internet for family history > research. > I do hope someone can help me help Harold > Thanks Alison > > Below is what he wants a bit of help with:- > ...Phlippa Bowcher (Boucher) was the daughter of Mathew Gross and Mary > Slade; married a John Retallack in 1823, and James Hill Bowcher in > 1833.Philippa, James and daughter Mary migrated to Australia in the early > 1850s, and settled in Bendigo. > Mary married Thomas Rowe in Bendigo in 1857, and their first child was James > Bowcher Rowe. > > James Bowcher Rowe moved to NSW, married a lady named Lillian Grant and, by > her, had, to my knowledge, seven children. 3. Dear Alison, I have two different types of information regarding the ROWE clan. The first may be a direct connection, but I don't want to get your hopes too high. My grandfather's elder sister Elizabeth MONKS married a James Sydney ROWE from Meroo Creek, Mudgee, NSW. I would expect that John Graham will probably have everything about every ROWE in NSW. His wife is the the grand-daughter of the above family. The name Lillian turns up in that family. As far as ^^^ALL^^^ the names go you will understand why, since he is the infamous......... John Graham who is the keeper of the keys of "Sydney Dead Persons Society" and "Genealogy from Gerringong" johngrah@ozemail.com.au http://members.ozemail.com.au/~johngrah/dps.html Today I have played with the free on line birth, death and marriage indexes in NSW http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au Registration Number; Last Name; Given Name(s); Father's Given Name(s); Mother's Given Name(s); District; 35184/1886; ROWE; WILLIAM G; JAMES; LILLIAN; WILCANNIA; 36158/1887; ROWE; MARY E; JAMES; LILLIAN; WILCANNIA; 36039/1889; ROWE; BESSIE F; JAMES B; LILLIAN; WILCANNIA; 15269/1901; ROWE; MARY T; LILLIAN C; NEWTOWN; 4245/1903; ROWE; DAPHNE J; ALFRED J; LILLIAN J G; LITHGOW; 18161/1900; ROWE; GEORGE C; JAMES P; LILLIAN; WILCANNIA; This one appeared under a search for James. This is either an "oops" or she was Baptised Lil(l)ian Madeline and was known as Madeline Rowe, or something was chewed up by a transcriber 36872/1897 ROWE SOPHY G JAMES B MADELINE L WILCANNIA The birth listings stop at 1905 The on-line birth listing grow complex if you search using James as the father, and extremely complex if you introduce Lithgow into the plan DEATHS......... with mother as Lillian Registration Number; Last Name; Given Name(s); Father's Given Name(s); Mother's Given Name(s;) District; 13792/1890 ROWE WILLIAM G JAMES B LILIAN WILCANNIA 2243/1903; ROWE; DAPHNE J; ALFRED J; LILLIAN J G; LITHGOW; 8167/1906; ROWE; MARY E; JAMES B; LILLIAN; SOUTH BROKEN HILL; 2624/1913; ROWE; ALLAN M; ALFRED J; LILLIAN J; LITHGOW; 8074/1943; ROWE; THOMAS; 43 YRS BROKEN HILL; LILLIAN; BROKEN HILL The death listings stop at 1945 Marriages:........... Trying to search using .... You may have to see who has the Microfiche of the BDM's. I don't know much about the probate indexes, but if you have a date of death, you may be able to ferret out the full name. If there's knowledge of where the person was buried you may be able to access cemetery records. Example Rookwood is on CD Eastern Suburbs cemeteries have plenty of ROWEs buried there.... http://www.esmp.nsw.gov.au/grave_search.php Happy Hunting, Tony Moore (Balgo, Western Australia) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ On 30 Nov 2003 at 15:03, Alison wrote: > Dear Listers > I have had an email from an elderly ex-missionary living in Thailand > who has recently been introduced to the joys of the internet for > family history research. I have completed a list of Publicans Licenses for 1865-1900 for Western NSW, and for 1865-1870 for Central NSW - about 1400 hotels. To accompany this I have taken articles and advertisements from the newspapers of the time, and extracts from books, to give a glimpse of what life was like for the holders of these Publican's Licenses. Included in this section are some BRIEF histories (a couple of paragraphs) of some of the families who were in some way involved with the hotels. Does anyone have any information that they would like to contribute to this section - be it information on the hotels (for that period), or their own "hotel-family" history? Both sections will be available on NSW-WEST when Linda is given the material and undertakes this mammoth task. 1. [NSW-W] Canonbar Holdings
    2. Karen
    3. I am having a lot of fun and excitement with my family tree at the moment. I have managed to locate the family of one "lost" brother which has led to many pieces of the jigsaw falling into place. But it also meant that a few pieces that I thought I had actually belong to a completely different puzzle and it added a lot more pieces that don't seem to want to fit anywhere. Everytime I think I have put a few pieces nice and neatly into the puzzle some marauding event comes along and upsets the whole lot and I need to start all over again :-) Hence the reason for my posting - Canonbar Holdings has crept into the edge of the puzzle on me and while I know that I have seen Canonbar mentioned here on the list before I never paid a great deal of attention. Hence my request - is anyone in the position to give me a brief overview of who and what Canonbar is or was in 1917? My interest is not so much in Canonbar the property (thats a long way from the piece of land I am researching) but rather the company that purchased land in and around Nyngan. I guess the real question that I am asking is who and what made up Canonbar Holdings in and around 1917 / 1918. Any help is most gratefully received!!!! Regards Karen

    3. Dear Karen, You will be very pleased to the note that the same family that now owns and operates Canonbar I believe owned it back then too. I think that it would be the grandfather of Shane who set up the merino stud. They have now diversified into winemaking as well. 3. Dear listers, Could some one please be able to tell me when the electoral rolls came into being. I realise women did not get the vote when the men did. Also what would the names of the electorates for Chiltern, Ballarat in Victoria be, and Tottenham, Nymagee, Nyngan,Condobolin, Bobadah and Penrith in NSW, both state and federal pre and post Federation. Hope this is not a silly question. Regards Elaine

    3. Dear Elaine, I got the answer for you straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak: Australian Electoral Commission..... http://www.aec.gov.au Under the section "When" called "Australian Electoral History", there is a timeline from 1788 onwards which will answer most of your questions. Since my "RING" family come from Chiltern I have quite a large odds & sods collection about Chiltern in my collection so I will go through that to see what else I can find. Victoria.......... http://www.vec.vic.gov.au/ New South Wales:......... http://www.seo.nsw.gov.au/ Here is the NSW Time line: http://www.seo.nsw.gov.au/publications__resources/trivia__history_corner/history_in_nsw.html The above word wraps so click on this re-direction: http://tinyurl.com/uts2 Briefly it says: 1902 Women's Franchise Act enabled women to vote (this was first implemented in the 1904 election). You can search around these three web sites at leisure. Particular curly questions could be aimed either at state or federal depending on what the question is. I hope this will be a starter while I search my Chiltern folder. Cheers, Tony Moore (Balgo, Western Australia) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ -----Original Message----- From: Alan & Elaine Rogers <erogers@powerup.com.au> To: AUS-NSW-WEST-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 18:56:50 +1000 Subject: [NSW-W] Electoral rolls.
