Hi Sue and Ross, One web site that may help if you know how they emigrated (that is assisted or unassisted) is http://www.standard.net.au/~jwilliams/migrate.htm Unfortunately indexing of passenger lists is progressing very slowly and while there are some lists that have been indexed many many more haven't been. Its much easier if you know the name of the ship and the year which they arrived. I too had a Miller come to Australia (from Germany) in the mid 1850's (1858 to be exact). Fortunately for us he became a naturalised Australian in 1904 (when the officials turned up in the Cobar area post Federation - many people from the area were naturalised then). On the papers for the application for naturalisation they were required to list when and how they arrived in Australia. This is where we got the name of the ship. Once we had the ships name and the year we were able to go to the NSW State Archives (and Melbourne for one relative who got off there) and get a copy of the passenger and crew lists lodged with the harbour master. If there is a possibility that they were naturalised you can search the national archives to get the details. http://www.naa.gov.au/ Unfortunately with the name Miller you are going to have fun!!! There were lots and lots of Millers around. Don't forget when you are searching that many names were abbreviated or misspelt (eg Patrick may be written simply as Ptk; Miller can be spelt Millar, Muller etc). I usually use a wild card when I am searching, takes longer but lets me ensure as best I can that I have done a thorough search. If you do find any naturalisation records, or any other references you can order a digital copy of the naturalisation papers from the National Archives. This is free, but does take them a few weeks to process them and get them on line for you. More recent records (eg WW2) arent available on line but you can request photocopies of them. Our Miller was a George Miller - a lovely common name - so it took us a few tries before we got the right naturalisation papers, but it was a wonderful source of information. "I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity." - Gilda Radner - Keep Looking For Rainbows!! _--_|\ /Karen \ \ _.--._ / v Karen, Mum to Alex (8 years, T-18 Mosaic) http://members.optushome.com.au/karens

    3. Hi list For those with Irish ancestors, the following which I have come across, may be of interest. "Land Owners in Ireland 1876" is essentially a census substitute that has the names and address of every land owner in Ireland in 1876 who had at least one acre of land. 1. [NSW-W] [Admin] Changing e-mail addresses
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, With SPAM getting right out of control, a lot of people are changing e-mail addresses. Which is fine. :) But this is just a reminder that what you need to do if you are on a list is to unsubscribe using your old address and then resubscribe using the new address. The subscription address for both is: [name of list]-L-request@rootsweb.com (for list/individual messages) or [name of list]-D-request@rootsweb.com (for Digest/consolidated messages) Use either "unsubscribe" or "subscribe" (depending on what you are doing), and the computer will deal with you just fine. At the moment I am getting quite a few messages (sometimes five a day) from people who just e-mail me or the list (which is not the preferred option!) saying they have changed their addresses. Often if it is to me I have no idea what list they are talking about (I administer a number) or I have no idea what the old e-mail address is that they want unsubscribed. So the answer is - just unsubscribe from the old address yourself, and subscribe using the new one. HOWEVER - if you have a listing in the surname pages you do need to e-mail me off-list, telling me which list homepages you are listed on, plus the old and new e-mail addresses. Otherwise there will be someone out there who is looking for you, and they will not be able to find you. Which would be sad. So you do need to spell it out for me in really simple terms - would love to have memorised where everyone is, but that is just not an option. Cheers Linda List-admin kapana@netspace.net.au

She has provided HEAPS of information on her hotel-keeping families. Thanks You Jill! If anyone else has any hotel-keeping families, Rusheen would love to hear about them. Cheers Linda

    3. Congratulations to all concerned. Being fairly new to geneology and the various lists, I can only guess at the amount of work which has gone into all the various web pages and resources. I have learned heaps from everybody (haven't contributed much as yet), and couldnt even contemplate the work involved, even though in professional life I have to format, copy and prepare "stuff" for publication. Well done to the list administrators and contributors who give so much of their time, expertise, and good will. Merry Christmas to all, and good (research) Hunting. 1. [NSW-W] Three Cheers for Linda and Peter.
    2. Rusheen Craig
    3. Many of you have congratulated me on my Publicans, but I doubt that any of you know how much the finished product you see is largely due to the wonderful work of our List Ad Min, Linda, and her Deputy Peter. My pubs were, over months, three days a week at the library, followed by multi days at home to try to untangle the information. (My love to my ever tolerant husband who has lost me to the drink for so long.) My work was finished. I submitted it. It appeared on NSW-WEST. NOT AS SIMPLE AS IT MIGHT SEEM. In this world, where when we want something copied, we simply put the original material in a machine, press a button, and the copies appear, I had naively thought that this was all that was involved with my publican information. I WAS WRONG. Firstly there was the task of making my spreadsheet Licenses appear in a readible form for people to easily access. I can't begin to understand how Peter managed this. All I know is that he was not helped by my using hyphens without spacing which meant that some of the text refused to wrap. I thank him for his patience with my total lack of computer knowledge, firstly with the Leases, and now with the Publicans. In the second section, I thought there would be work - 120 pages of copying - but thought that it could be done a page at a time. WRONG AGAIN. Hotel by hotel, Linda was faced with great slabs of unformatted information that she had to carefully reassemble. (All those ads that I did must have been so much work!) Her contribution didn't stop there. She meticulously checked all details - which stopped me from omitting such things as a word which would have given me an ad for the Globe Hotel, Albury where McCracken's XXX was drawn through (ice) One of Alcock's Newest Billiard Table. - anyone for billiards?? Linda and Peter have helped me, A TOTAL AMATEUR, to present my information in a way that it is useable by others. Just look at our WEST Homepages. THEY ARE PLAIN - GREAT!!!!. They are not that way because well meaning amateurs like me decided that they would like to share some of their info. It has taken all the skill and time and commitment of Linda and Peter, to give us A WONDERFUL RESOURCE. I think it is time that we stopped taking all this for granted. I would like you to show how much you appreciate the work of Linda and Peter BY GIVING THREE CHEERS.......HIP PIP.........

    2. mewilson
    3. Hi Listeners, I attended a ceremony on the 'Protection and Recognition of Old Polia-Greenvale Cemetery' last Sunday. The cemetery is on Greenvale Station which is off the old Pooncarie Road between Menindee and Pooncarie. The cemetery was registered on 7th April 1916 but the oldest grave is of John McLean 1849, also William McLean 1869 and Annie Page 1925. It is thought that there could be more than 25 people buried there. There was more than 60 people present and I would like to congratulate the people who fenced the area and erected the sign for the cemetery. Polia was a very large property before it was broken up into blocks. I have a 1881-2 Electoral Roll and 34 people (all men-women could not vote in those days) were listed for Polia. It is wonderful to see that such old cemeteries are being preserved. Mary
