Hello Alistair, a couple of years ago I volunteered to do a project digitizing circa 1993 newspaper articles for Bill Shute. In several of them young lads were sentenced to serve time on the training ship Vernon. The Vernon may still have been in use during the period that interests you. Thanks, that was the other ship I was trying to remember......The Vernon. I think from memory they were both anchored off Cockatoo Island, and the authorities did their utmost to keep the boys away from the female convicts on the island. Hi Mary, in the newspaper articles I digitized many of the young girls found on the streets of Sydney after dark were sent to garden island and taught a trade rather than have them drift into prostitution Regards Max Bancroft -------Original Message------- From: Mary Cunningham Date: 28/06/2012 6:54:55 AM To: aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ANS] 1952-1956: Ships arriving Sydney from London?
