I'm trying to trace Adam Boyle, born in Scotland 1868, who emigrated to NSW in August 1888 on board the steamship 'Damascus' from London. His father, Robert Boyle, was a German and English professor in St Petersburg, Russia. Adam apparently married Lillian Ann Chandler in Sydney, but I can't find any traces of him. Any clues would be appreciated. I have some letters from him to my grandfather. John Humphrey (Toronto)
John In the NSW BDMs, Adam Boyle married Lilian A Chandler, registered Newtown (an inner Sydney suburb) in 1911, NSW Reg No 14045/1911, http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm We can only search for NSW births up until 1911 and there are no births registered to Adam and Lilian in 1911. What is the address on the letters to your grandfather? Many thanks for your helpful information - that's great. He would have been 43 at the time of marriage, so it's possible they never had any kids. Unfortunately for the purposes of tracing him, the letters to my grandfather were sent from Russia and Finland - where his father was a teacher - just before he skedaddled down to Sydney. That's why it's such a blank slate for me. He and my grandpa had been schoolmates growing up in Kilmarnock. A few months ago I stumbled across a 2-year old enquiry about Adam Boyle's Ayrshire background from an Australian gentleman who was some kind of descendant - but unfortunately his email address was no longer good. Anyway, you've given me a good lead. It's really appreciated.
