    3. Greetings all I have found many mistakes on death certificates whist searching for burials into the Balmain Catholic cemetery The issue seems to be that the BDM people accept the information they are given, seemingly on the basis that the person giving the information knows and provides the accurate information, but this seems to not always be the case, especially, in the case of burials I have a number of instances where the death certificate says the burial was into, say, Rookwood, but the cemetery office has no record of that burial and I have concluded that in some cases the information was provided to the BDM by the undertaker and perhaps they did six burials that day and got a few mixed up or perhaps getting it right was not a priority for them In the case of burials I think that the record most likely to be right is the cemetery office and I have accepted them as correct I would always encourage famhis researchers who have a DC saying X cemetery to actually check that they are there, and of course if they are not there, that opens up a real can of worms where are they???? I think that BDM will alter records if they can be proven to be incorrect, but that is way out of my remit good hunting Patrick Callaghan PS I have now discovered 1003 burials into the Balmain Catholic cemetery and am calling it a day and will publish my work -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Alistair Cameron Sent: Sunday, 16 September 2012 2:09 PM To: Max Bancroft; aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ANS] Errors in NSW Bdms On 16/09/2012 12:03 PM, Max Bancroft wrote: > I don't think anyone is actually knocking them Marge, but we would like to help them correct their records. 3. Hi Patrick, on a death certificate I have for an old lady, it has the informant as being her youngest son. In the notations about her children her eldest child does not receive any mention which may be an indication he died at an early age or the informant did not know of him. It gives two females as being surviving children but it would appear they may be the son's wives as they do not appear to be her offspring on the NSW BDM CD. Following a death, families are grieving and mistakes are sometimes made in what an informant tells the official who is taking down the details. regards Max Bancroft ________________________________ From: Patrick Callaghan <balcolyn@activ8.net.au> To: aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 16 September 2012 5:50 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Errors in NSW Bdms Greetings all I have found many mistakes on death certificates whist searching for burials into the Balmain Catholic cemetery The issue seems to be that the BDM people accept the information they are given, seemingly on the basis that the person giving the information knows  and provides the accurate information, but this seems to not always be the case, especially, in the case of burials I have a number of instances where the death certificate says the burial was into, say, Rookwood, but the cemetery office has no record of that burial and I have concluded that in some cases the information was provided to the BDM by the undertaker and perhaps they did six burials that day and got a few mixed up or perhaps getting it right was not a priority for them In the case of burials I think that the record most likely to be right is the cemetery office and I have accepted them as correct I would always encourage famhis researchers who have a DC saying X cemetery to actually check that they are there, and of course if they are not there, that opens up a real can of worms    where are they????
