Edwardian St Peters Whether or not you have a family connection with the St. Peters, Cooks River area in New South Wales, the following event should give you some idea of the world of your ancestors. St Peters Church, Cooks River, will celebrate the centenary of the old rectory on Saturday, 2nd December. The foundation stone of the rectory, the second to be built on the site, was laid by Archbishop William Saumarez Smith on 1st Dec. 1906. Several memorial stones were also placed in position by ladies connected with the church. The rector at that time was Rev. G. Middleton. Some of the brickmasters of the district each contributed several thousand bricks. As part of its free, monthly Saturday Open Afternoon programme a special celebration will be held from 1.30 till 4.30. The afternoon will include children's games of the Edwardian era, afternoon tea served on the old rectory verandah and an historical display in the church hall of newspaper events and advertisements of 1906. At 2.30 there will be an entertainment called ‘It happened in 1906’ which is based on events, both local and international, from newspaper reports of the day, with popular music, hymns, bush songs, poetry and literary extracts. Dress fashion of the day will be recreated. Come dressed in 1906 (Edwardian) style if you wish. St Peters Church is located at 187 Princes Highway, St Peters.
