Hi all In trying to trace my g grandmother Madeline Scard born in England about 1855, I found what I think is the correct family in the 1861 English Census. The household consisted of mother Ellen, father Thomas Scard, Madeline Scard (6) and a house servant (14). I looked at the original image to find their address and Thomas' occupation. Beside Thomas was M.R.C.S. practising, but this was also written beside Ellen and Madeline as well! Googling M.R.C.S. only seems to suggest Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. Do I assume that this Thomas Scard was a surgeon and it is just a mistake that M.R.C.S. is written against mother and child as well. There was a Thomas Scard who worked as a Ship's Surgeon on immigrant ships coming to Australia around 1866, but Madeline seems to have come independently to Sydney in 1874. Lyn Mealey Sydney
