In the Sydney Morning Herald, 23rd May 1831, under the heading "Parish of St Philip - Allotments", four allotments and their relative locations in Clarence Street are given. Included are the allotments of my ancestors John CUMMINS and Christopher James ROBLEY. Does anyone know how I might find out just where in Clarence Street the CUMMINS and ROBLEY allotments were, from the information given here? (I know nothing about surveying.) Parish of St Philip - Allotments Eleanor DUMIGAN, 12 perches, bounded on the East by Clarence Street, bearing South 14 degrees 45', East 62 links; On the South by John CUMMINGS' allotment bearing West 16 degrees, South 58 links and West 19 degrees, South 58 links on the West of Henry LINDEN's allotment bearing North 13 degrees 30' West 69 links; and on the North by James Christopher ROBLEY's allotment, bearing East 13 degrees 15' North 117 links. Quit rent 6 shillings per annum commencing 1st July, 1823. By command of His Excellency the Governor. Alexander McLeay. Thanks, John Ross
Hi John, There is a J. Cummings listed as claimant on Lot 4 on this map, showing the block bounded by Erskine, Kent and Clarence Streets and Margaret Place. [Allotments, Section 58 between Kent Street and Clarence Street, Sydney]. Date : 1834 - 1848 http://nla.gov.au/nla.map-f724 Might be your man ... Obtained by using the keywords - Clarence Street - on the National Library of Australia website. http://www.nla.gov.au/map/ There are a few other Clarence Street allotment maps, so may be worth having a good look at these as well. Diane, Thanks so much for this link. It helps a lot, and I will look closely at the other NLA maps. Hadn't thought to look there!
