Hi Listers, While we are discussing shoe factories, does anyone remember KENT SHOES in the 1940s. They began in an ex butchers shop in Norton St Leichhardt around 1945 making sandals and later set up a factory in Petersham to make shoes. The factory was burnt down after a couple of years of operation. Any additional information would be appreciated. Regards, Rex.
Hi there all, Thought I would put my two cents worth in as long as we're talking shoes in the 40s. I don't know where they were sold, but my mum used to make macramé tops and ankle straps to go onto high heeled wooden platforms. This was around 1945/46 and I can recall her rushing through the housework to sit in the sun and make these. I think it was referred to as 'general piecework' and it was her input into the general housekeeping, but I don't think it was very lucrative.
