G'day there, I'm new to NSW Probate Packets and I want to get some, but am confused about the numbering system used to order them. I'd be grateful for your assistance. I've got the Pre-order Probate Packets form from http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/pre-order_probate_packets_2793.asp My problem is with the Series Number, the Packet Number and the Container/Box Number. I figure there's no point in pre-ordering if I'm not sure what these mean. I went to the State Library and looked up the Probate Index, located the people I'm interested in, and noted the 6-digit number for each of them. What is that number used for in my order? I presume that I select the Series Number as being the date range outlined on the Pre-Order form, but am still in doubt about the Packet and Container/Box number. Advice on these basic questions will be much appreciated. Phil Young Glebe NSW
Dear Phil, You will not get the Box or Container Number without going to State Records. Pre Ordering staff have to do it for you. You are allowed four by pre order, however if you are there at 9.10am, then by 9.20am you can look at four numbers yourself and request them next run, 9.30am. Before 10.20am you can look at another 4 and order them for the 10.30am run. It takes 20-30 minutes for them to come up as they are located at the back of the building. Look at Archives in Brief No 84 on www.records.nsw.gov.au and I will also send you a message that Martyn Killion submitted to the SAG list recently which was interesting.
