Hi Rex I was browsing through the archives of the Sydney List as I have been on holidays for a month and noted your enquiry re the above. My great grandfather, Frederick Peter SAUNDERS, was Bank Messenger for this Bank from the early 1850s till the 1880s and my grandmother was born in the premises above the bank. My enquiries led me to the ANZ archives at 100 Queen Street, Melbourne, and the following is an excerpt of the information I received from the ANZ Archives Manager in January 2005 (by email). 'You are correct in stating that the London Chartered Bank of Australia (1852-1923 was restructured in 1893 as the London Bank of Australia Ltd (1893-1921); this bank was then taken over in 1921 by the English, Scottish and Australian Bank (1852-1970); and subsequently the ES&A joined with the ANZ Bank Ltd to form the ANZ Banking Group (1970 to present).' 'The ANZ Archives is fortunate to possess a substantial number of records from some of its antecedent banks. Unfortunately, the Archives is not so fortunate with the records of the former London Chartered Bank of Australia and the London Bank of Australia. For example, some staff records do exist however they do not list Frederick Peter Saunders.' As you can see, I was unsuccessful in my quest, but I hope this might help you. Incidentally, there are some great pictures of the London Chartered Bank in George Street, Sydney, on the net. Google images should bring them up. Noel
I would advise anyone with ancestors employed by the old ES&A bank to contact the archivist at ANZ. Several years ago I received copious records for my great grandfather who was a bank manager up till 1912. They were incredibly helpful.
