    3. G'day Louise, I'm very interested in the BATTY name at both Reynolds Street and Adolphus Street, and HARRISON at Reynolds Street, and DAVIDSON at Smith Street. The Batty family was well-known in Balmain for Thomas Batty (1827-1894) owned a considerable area of land in the area that now includes Batty Street. Thomas' daughter Clara Batty married Arthur HARRISON in 1881 and they lived at 76 Reynolds Street. Similarly, Thomas' daughter Ada Batty married George DAVIDSON in 1894 and they lived at 65 Smith Street Rozelle. I have considerable information on these families including photos of most of them, if anyone is interested. Thanks for your kind offer to share your information. 3. Hello Phil, Sorry for the delay. I had a chance to get away for a week, and have been trying to catch up since. In regard to Mr A Batty, between Feb and Mar 1894 my great grandfather Edwin EDWARDS carried out painting and decorating services on a terrace in Reynolds St Balmain to the value 39 pounds, charged to Mr Batty. The money was received on account in weekly instalments. He seemed to be doing odd bits for the Battys (there's some alliteration for you!) through 1894, including 4s for painting Mr Battys front door in July, 3s in Oct, 10 pounds for Mrs Batty's House in October, and 11s 6d for Miss Batty's house in Smith St in December. In 1895, we have an entry "Received from Mr A Batty on account of Mrs DAVIDSON's house, Smith Street" - 90 pounds! This work was carried out between April 1895 and end July 1895. Batty was obviously a generous papa. The 90 pounds was for painting/wallpapering and glazing. Right through 1895, he was doing work for Mrs HARRISON, Mr A. BATTY and Mrs DAVIDSON, so he seems to have been their painter of choice. I will add here that he was also at one time head decorator at the Hotel Australia, and was a specialist in all the paint finishes of the time - marbling, ebonising, graining, etc. I imagine that this is what some of these clients were requiring. The work on Mrs Davidson's house is listed in great detail, including a lot of wood graining. The house seems quite large. In late 1895 he was doing work for Mr Davidson of Smith St, on a terrace in Anne St, value 38 pounds. In 1987, for Mr A BATTY, cottages in Adolphus St, about 20 pounds. Thats about it. Hope it is of some interest.
