Hi All I have just been to Sydney to organize some home care for my dad, and while there visited the Balmain Library in Darling Street, Balmain. It sits below the Balmain Town Hall. They have a family history section. While there I looked through the "Leichhardt Historical Journals" to find my great great grandfather was the first unofficial post master of Leichhardt Post Office in the 1880's. They paid him ten pounds per year, and he ran the post office from his general store. "Purdie's Store". I can rember visiting my Grandfathyer who lived in School St near the Wharf. The Trams could not Brake down the Steep hill near the Wharf nor could they climb up. They coupled onto a large motor box that provided braking and climbing power. Darling street connected Balmain - Rozell - Lillyfield and Leichardt.
