Hi fellow listers, I purchased a death cert for rellie in 1991 so must have been off the microfiche data base. A family member has just told me that there are two entries on the BDM website for same person with different surnames. I have had a look at the cdrom and found that the entry with the surname that I have the cert for has an additional column with Prefix - R. The certificate that I have does not mention the other surname so does anyone have any ideas of how Birth deaths & marriagaes know about it. Thank you in anticipation. Laraine
Hi Laraine, Usually R is for a Cross Reference. The most common situation that comes to mind is the birth of a child, born out of wedlock. For instance 'Jane Smith' born in 1888 with rego.11223 & rego.11223 R. If you're lucky then 2nd Reference will have the child registered under the Father's name 'Brown'. Or sometimes it's just a simple case of being registered under McDonald & Macdonald. Do you mean the Death certificate does not mention the other name? The Death Certificate information is only as good as the Informant's knowledge, who is giving the information about the deceased. Perhaps they knew the person was born under another name? Kind regards, Sherrie. --- http://www.silkweb.com.au/ On Mon, 29 Nov 2010 20:01:15 +1100, K & L Goodworth <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi fellow listers, > > I purchased a death cert for rellie in 1991 so must have been off the > microfiche data base. Dear Laraine, With marriages I found that two entries often occurred, one with the "R". One entry was the maiden name and the second the first married name.
