Hi Phillipa When you mentioned PLC Croydon I looked up a book that I have on the school "The Golden Hope" author John McFarlane In 1889 " Shubra Hall " Croydon owned by Hordern was aquired new buildings were added and the College was officially opened in 1891 under the heading of teachers 1890 Miss Ella Wilson Dancing only listed for that year no listing of the name Service from 1888 to 1891 maybe the Wilson"s ran a small school from their home, people did in those days taking maybe four or five pupils. or even less then again did the Service family live in this area at the time. Lorette just got your email below - and I think you have solved the Ederslie problem. The mention of Croydon jogged my memory and I remembered my mother saying that the school her mother went to became PLC Croydon - so the Croydon reference makes sense >the other school "Elderslie" is a problem can not find in randwick area > >did find 1904 a Mrs Annie Hawdon Wilson "Elderslie" Young St Croydon >her two daughters ( ellie and Gwendolene were teachers) only trouble >is, this is outside the area that you are looking in,. I think >that her husband was Reverend William Wilson > >
Hi Lorette From your information it looks as if Elderslie was a minor school whose building - and possibly some pupils were absorbed by PLC Croydon - my grandmother had moved by 1895 to Brighton College Randwick where her family lived. You've been a great help in sorting out the schools!
