Greetings Ann Glad I was able to help I have been searching for burials at the Balmain Catholic cemetery for many years and use a number of methods but in the case of the Robinson's I think tat this is how it went, to begin with I have looked at every SMH funeral notice from the beginning of 1868 to the end of 1903 and record those where the funeral notice gives the place of burial as the Balmain or Leichhardt Catholic or RC cemetery and I think this is how I found Alexander in 1902 Having discovered that Alexander was buried in the BCC in 1902, I then search the BDM index to see if he was married and if so, then search for the death and burial of his wife, I then search to see if Alexander (and his wife if known) had any children who died and then look for their place of burial and I think this is how I found John. If I find children and if the death was registered in Balmain or Leichhardt or nearby I purchase a partial DC transcription to 'prove' where the burial took place, fortunately Leichhardt Council has provided small grants over the last two years to help purchase transcriptions In addition to the above Alexander's death BDM index will probably give the name of his parents and so it goes on. Having the SMH on line now is a great bonus, all of my 30+ years of searching funeral notices was done from microfilm and a viewer People such as yourself also email me from time to time with information or queries about possible burials at the BCC This is rather long winded but I hope it helps all the best Patrick Callaghan PS I plan to publish the 'History of the Balmain Catholic cemetery and St. Columba's church and parish', which has progessively built over the old cemetery next year and will put your name and email on file if you are interested. The book will also include the re-created burial register ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Jack To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2010 8:38 PM Subject: FW: Balmain RC Cemetery From: Ann Jack [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, 21 October 2010 7:54 PM To: 'patrick callaghan' Subject: RE: Balmain RC Cemetery Hello Patrick Thank you for your help and your kindness I would like to ask a question if that is ok? Before you received John Robinson's DC what made you think that John was buried in Balmain RC Cemetery? I could not find a Funeral Notice for him. John Robinson's DC is attached, as my main aim is to confirm the place of burial I only purchase partial transcriptions, these give me the info I need and are cheaper than purchasing a full transcription hope it is useful to you all the best Patrick Callaghan ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Jack To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 18, 2010 6:04 PM Subject: FW: Balmain RC Cemetery From: Ann Jack [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 18 October 2010 5:46 PM To: 'patrick callaghan' Subject: RE: Balmain RC Cemetery Hello Patrick Thank you so much for your email, you have been a great help. The George I'm looking for is the son of Alexander & Ellen, and he would have been around 20/21 years old when he passed away. I had a look at the SMH funeral notice you mention, not sure if he is the one, but I will check out "Waverley Cemetery". You mention that you have a death certificate for John Robinson is this correct? If that is the case, could I have a copy? Best wishes Ann From: patrick callaghan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, 15 October 2010 1:06 PM To: Ann Jack Subject: Re: Balmain RC Cemetery Hello Ann Many thanks for your email, I am always able to help wherever I can, here is what I have uncovered, some of which you may already know There is an SMH funeral notice dated 25 January 1895 for Matilda Emily Martin which states that her funeral went to Balmain cemetery this generally means that she was buried at the Balmain General cemetery (now Pioneer Park on Norton St. in Leichhardt) however this is not absolutely conclusive as I have a number of burials listed as Balmain cemetery who later proved to be buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery. Very few Catholics were buried in the Balmain General cemetery, but fortunately the burial register for this cemetery has survived and I will contact a researcher I know who has a copy of this record and ask her to check, if Matilda E does not appear on the General cemetery then its reasonable to conclude that she was buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery. Its a bit confusing having two cemeteries less that a mile apart and both generally known as 'Balmain cemetery' I will let you know the outcome of further research The BDM index of deaths lists a George H Robinson ( parents Alexander and Ellen) whose death was registered in 1888 The is an SMH funeral notice dated 18 July 1888 which states that George John Robinson was to be buried at Waverley cemetery Could this be your man?? I will also continue checking to see if I can discover any more detail. I have a death certificate (Registration No, 2500) for John Robinson who was buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery on24 July 1892 You have probably seen the SMH funeral notice (20 March 1902) for Alexander Robinson which also clearly states that he was buried in the RC cemetery Leichhardt otherwise known as the Balmain Catholic cemetery. Alexander was amongst the last to be buried there, as far as I have been able to so far discover there were only three burials after Alexander, the last being on 27 November 1902. He may have been buried in the same grave as John Robinson Sorry to be so long winded but the wash up of all this is that John Robinson and Alexander Robinson are definitely in the Balmain Catholic cemetery, Matilda E may be but it seems unlikely that George is buried there I will let you know if anything new crops up all the best Patrick Callaghan ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Jack To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 7:11 PM Subject: Balmain RC Cemetery Hello Mr Callaghan It is stated (Funeral Notice - SMH )that Alexander Robinson who died 19/3/1902, is buried at the Catholic Cemetery, Leichhardt Also his daughter & sons may also be buried at the said cemetery. Matilda Emily Martin - Died January 1895 George Robinson - Died 1888 John Robinson - Died 1892 Alexander Robinson - Died 1875 How are able to confirmed these burials at the CC Leichhardt? Regards Ann Jack
Please also put my name and email on file - I would also be interested. One branch of my Davis family were RC and are very likely to have family members buried in Balmain, some of the CofE ones were certainly buried in the Balmain protestant cemetery. You have done an amazing job Patrick, and I'm sure a lot of people will be/should be grateful. I'm so glad the Leichhardt Council has helped with some of the expenses.
