    3.  As I was fortunate to have so much help with Christopher Marsh, I will keep my fingers crossed for help with his brother (my GGG grandfather) Joseph Marsh.  Joseph M was born in 1812 in Leeds, Yorkshire North (parents Joseph & Sarah).  Both brothers were convicted for the same crime in 1836 and transported to NSW in 1837 on the John II, Joseph for 7 years, Christopher for 14.  In 1849, Joseph was sent to Darlinghurst Gaol (unfortunately the exact date is unknown, but would have been very useful) for the murder of William Murrah and eventually sentenced to 10 years labour, the first 2 to be served in leg irons.  I am hoping someone might be able to find when Joseph died and if he had ever remarried.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, while researching the Marsh's on the Trove National Library site (fantastic by the way :-) ),  I came across reference to "unclaimed letters".  Letters that were not delivered to employees of the Hudson Bay Company in the 1800's were returned to England and have been kept there these many years unopened.  Only recently have a number of these letters been published - a most interesting find.  I am wondering if these "unclaimed letters" in NSW might also have been preserved. Thank you again for all your help, Scott B Canada

    3. Scott, It seems your MARSH brothers obtained Tickets of Leave. Have a look the NSW State Records site, on-line indexes (searchable by name). You can apply for copies on-line for a small fee. > http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ (go to "indexes onl-line", then > "convicts index") Have you looked at Trove to see whether there are any reports of murder of William Murrah? That would at least give you a date. The NSW Police Gazettes may turn up some information re Joseph - unfortunately they are not on-line and at the moment I don't have access to them. There's only one likely death in the NSW indexes - Joseph Marsh died 1884 at Liverpool. No parents listed on index (so won't be on the certificate) and his age shown on index as 79 which doesn't quite tally with his date of birth you have, but may be just a guess on the part of the informant. Cannot see any likely marriage on NSW indexes. Very unlikely any unclaimed letters would have survived this long. Hope this helps.
