    3. The Mormons do not own ancestry, it is owned by a private equity company called Spectrum Equity. You may be thinking of familysearch.org which is owned by the Church of LDS. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought that was the case. I think it is a wonderful resource, especially for us country people. In the past I have had to spend $27 return on the train to Sydney to end up with limited time to queue to look at info. I still have the option to do that when I wish but it's just wondeful to be able to acess more and more from home and much cheaper in the long run. Yes, you do have to check the info but hasn't that always been the golden rule? 3. Thomas George Williams and his first wife Agnes Henderson, had four daughters Mary Agnes 1841,Ann Howe 1843 Bertha 1847 and Mary Ann b 1848 died 1849. I have information on Mary Agnes, and Bertha, but Ann remains elusive, and I am hoping someone can help me. Ann Howe Williams was baptised 20 Oct 1843 St Philip Sydney. She was re baptised 26 April 1853 as Annie Mary Williams in the Parish of St James in the County of Cumberland by John Meagher Catholic priest. Thomas Williams took off for Victoria where he remarried shortly before the death of his first wife in 1852.He had Mary Agnes and Bertha with him during their time there and later when they lived at Russell NZ. Bertha returned to Australia along with several of her 1/2 siblings and married Sydney in 1869 to a Walter Fletcher, using the name Isabella. Mary Agnes married a ships captain,W H Robertson, she was alive in 1873 her death also eludes me. Who took Annie Mary?? I t is thought Agnes Henderson was a convict, but not confirmed, in which case no known relations. I would really appreciate some help with this girl. cheers penne

    3. One of the reasons for Rootsweb's dominance in the genealogy field might be because of their anti-competitive undertakings. For many years I ran Genseek, a free, Australian based website with over 1000 indexes that people could access. I was contacted by Ancestry and asked to merge my indexes into theirs, in return for a paltry couple of free visits per year. When I explained that wasn't going to ever happen, they turned around the next day and started up their website - Genseek.com In business the old adage if you can't beat them then you had better consume them still prevails. So lets not be overly noble about what Rootsweb or Ancestry does for us. It is a business that dominates a particular market by one means or the other. The information on site are usually public records, owned by citizens whose Government has been paid a sum of money from the Mormons so they in turn can make money. pretty simple really cheers Jenny F <SNIP> -----Original Message----- From: Jan Koperberg Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2012 8:37 AM To: aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ANS] Knocking Ancestry Dear Marg and listers We are very lucky to have access to so much free information on Rootsweb, especially the huge number of mailing lists available to researchers. 3. Dear Marg and listers We are very lucky to have access to so much free information on Rootsweb, especially the huge number of mailing lists available to researchers. Also, many of the family history societies have their websites hosted, free of charge by Rootsweb, for example Blue Mountains Family History Society http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nswbmfhs/index.htm . At Blue Mountains Family History Society, we promote the use of Rootsweb and the mailing lists. At one of our recent general meetings, one of our members gave a presentation on the advantages of using Rootsweb and the mailing lists. We encourage our members to take advantage of this free service and to look on it as another family history tool. It is a great privilege for researchers to have some records available FREE on Ancestry, in association with State Records NSW, e.g. The Colonial Secretary's Papers 1788 - 1825. You will find some transcription errors on Ancestry and if you do, please let Ancestry know, so the errors can be rectified. We also find errors in transcriptions of records from other sources and we should have these corrected, as well, if possible. Try to have at least two separate sources of proof for each event. Go back to the original source, or have someone do it on your behalf if you are unable to travel to the original source or apply for a copy of the original source. Even our birth, marriage and death certificates are not always accurate. They are only as good as the informant, who may not even be a close relative. However, we have to make the best use of what is available. Thank you Marg for pointing out the value of consulting the "Who Do You Think You Are" magazine, especially the April 2012 issue for the tips on navigating around familysearch.org. I have not seen a copy, but will go looking for it in my local library. 3. Dear Listers A timely reminder Ancestry own Rootsweb . Rootsweb supplies an enormous range of tools for genealogists use for FREE . An example is this mailing list and the 30,000 others. Yesterday I posted some info to help in navigating your way around the new family search.org Re posting this The April 2012 issue of the 'Who do you think you are' magazine has all sorts of info including 10 amazing search tips in 50 ways to get more info from new familysearch.org. When all else fails could be worth casting an eye over.Or maybe read the instructions would have been better choice of words ! The copy I have is from my local library........ Perhaps no one bothered to read this ? as no one has commented on it . Why shouldn't there be a charge to use some data bases ? We are very lucky in this country to have excellent free access to a great deal of info .......... Trove being a prime example. The UK newspapers data base isnt free . All State Archives and many FHS have free data/ indexes on line ............. Victorian Government Gazettes is an amazing resource as is the VIC wills on line to 1925 for FREE. NSW State Records have digitised a large range of passenger arrivals ,again for FREE. TAS wills are on line for FREE Ancestry.com.au is also an amazing resource which can be accessed for FREE via many libraries and FHS . However if you wish home access its going to cost. My Ancestry world access sub costs me around A$1 a day . A greedy site ? no way. I have spent hours in the past down at the NSW State Library ( a 4 hour return train trip from home) trolling thru various electoral rolls on fiche looking for that elusive family . Now I can just type in a name /State and find who ever in an instant . Many years ago I use to drive to the LDS at Charlestown (Newcastle) most Tuesday mornings to look up some un index UK census film I had ordered . There were only 2 film readers and you had about 15 minutes to look before you got turfed off . When they got their first computer only a LDS library person could use it and you sat along side. Ages ago when the SAG first bought the then called St Catherine's BDM indexes again only library assistants were allowed to touch the fiche . You had to call out the name and approx time and it was utter mayhem . Ancestry UK. USA & Canada has some amazing data too and I get access to the lot for around $1 a day Bye MargM Sydney List Admin

    3. Hello Rob It seems strange that the new FamilySearch organizers have asked for comments and feedback, but have no intention of listening to the opinions of the many users. I have been very grateful, in the past to the wonderful generosity of the Latter Day Saints, in making the I.G.I. available, free to all users but it appears that modern commercialism has caught up and so it is unlikely that they will go back to the old system. It really forces people to subscribe to greedy sites like Ancestry if they wish to continue to research the past. Verna Sydney Aust.
