    1. [ANS] Rookwood CD vs BDM
    2. Sue England
    3. Hi list, i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the following puzzle: i have a *Thomas Godfrey ENGLAND * b. St. Lawrences, Sydney, 1854 (Thomas A on old cemetery printout records but definitely Thomas Godfrey acc'd to headstone) d. Parramatta, Sydney, NSW (aged 26 yrs on headstone, but born 1851 accd to bdm register as Thomas G) Buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney (accd to Rookwood Cemetery CD: Thomas Godfrey died 19 Dec 1880) BUT i cant find any reference to his death in the BDM's. This is my last "line" of my family tree to research and that death certificate would be invaluable.. I would be very grateful if anyone could make a suggestion as to why he may not be in the BDM records. Many thanks Sue

    3. Hi Liz and List It's a wonder we didn't bump into each other as I too visited (St. Stephens) Camperdown Cemetery this week while my dad was in RPAH. The whole of that inner western area of Sydney is now a cesspit. Leichhardt used to be a genteel suburb when my ancestors lived there in the early 1800's. Now every second shop and once lovely terrace house is a cafe or restaurant with tables and chairs littering the footpaths. Where do these people think they are, while they sip their latte's on bus stops? I could not bring myself to do it. Anyway I am pleased you found your ancestor. I had no such luck, and was also saddened at the state of this cemetery. I wrote down the name of the current pastor of the church but cannot find it. Mind you I haven't unpacked yet as I only arrived home a few hours ago. I was wondering where I might find a burial register for Camperdown Cemetery. Any help would be very much appreciated. Also does anyone know if there was some form of epidemic in 1849, as both my ancestor and his young bride both died in that year. Sadly the year they also married. He was 49 and she was 23. Camperdown Cemetery is in such a mess. When living in Sydney, I had a son buried in the old Anglican Section of Rookwood Cemetery, in his family plot that had been in Perpetual care for over 100 hundred years, at the time I new not much of the History of Rookwood, but imagined how peaceful it would have been when the old stone water courses were in action and not overgrown with weeds and the old rotten gazebos were new. I returned home to Norfolk Island and first started in my job here, with the KAVHA Restoration Team, Transcribing and restoring the Colonial Era Monuments in our Norfolk Island Cemetery. On visiting Sydney and Rookwood (now knowing its History) a few years ago, I was most impressed that Rookwood and its Serpentine, the Gazebos had all been restored, and excited to find many monuments for people that had once been residents of Norfolk Island. Whilst in Sydney this year with my father who was in RPAH, I took a stroll to visit the Camperdown Cemetery knowing its history, and also Knowing that not only my GG Grandfather Robert McPhail was buried there but also many people that had been to or born on Norfolk Island during first settlement, firstly you can imagine my excitement when Robert McPhails Monument was amongst the first that I looked at , still standing, but barely legible. I then strolled through the rest of the site finding monuments covered in Graffiti , knocked over and broken, the grass so long in areas that it was hard to tramp through or find monuments under it bee hives in Tombs, fallen trees, men sitting in the back corner drinking and smoking and yelling obscenities at passers by,the list goes on but ends with nothing but disgraceful. If the Church can not afford to take care of the site, should the Council not chip in and do something about it purely for its heritage?,...like the park next door that cannot be built on due to the fact it is on the original burial site. I will contact the church and see what options there are for this Historical site. 3. Dear Robert, The NSW Archives has lots to say about Bidura in Glebe Point Rd. http://tinyurl.com/yhgt6b It has this to say about your time frame:................... By 1939 Bidura housed boys up to 6 years of age and girls up to 18 years, with an attached school operated by a governess. From 1945 appointments from other Institutions were made, and in 1954 the appointment of an Education Officer allowed the commencement of twice weekly evening classes............. Bidura operated as a receiving home where children were temporarily accommodated awaiting placement in foster homes or awaiting transfer to other establishments - in transit from foster homes to hospitals or other foster homes......... Historical Building note: It would seem that Bidura House in its garden setting, is the most intact early villa along Glebe Point Road. The house was designed, built, and occupied, by Edmund Blacket in 1858. The ballroom was added in the 1880´s Bidura historically seems to fall within the Leichhardt Municipality. Therefore the Leichhardt Library and Information Service is likely to have quite a reasonable collection of old photos. The Council's historic houses page is here: http://www.lmc.nsw.gov.au/libraries/07/1041822538_26177.html and also it's e-mail contact The overall development proposal for the area seems to fall under the City of Sydney administration. http://tinyurl.com/yajfle This page says.......................... Bidura House in its garden setting, is the most intact early villa along Glebe Point Road. The house was designed, built, and occupied, by Edmund Blacket in 1858. The ballroom was added in the 1880´s. The domestic character of Bidura and its garden should be retained and reused for residential or commercial offices, or a boutique hotel. A public or quasi-public use which allows the public enjoyment particularly of the front garden, would be desirable. In 1980 a large multi-levelled Remand Centre was built at the rear of the house. Its siting behind street frontages and its stepped form minimises its bulk and visibility from the surrounding streets. The Remand Centre is now obsolete. Being a substantial structure in good condition, it lends itself to adaptive reuse, such as for residential or commercial purposes, or a conference or educational centre. A picture of the house is here: http://tinyurl.com/ydwxyy as well as it's longtime resident ... the cat and here too: http://www.glebesociety.org.au/AboutTGSI/Heritage/Heritage.htm For more images go to: http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=en&q=bidura&btnG=Search+Images or http://tinyurl.com/ydngrx I think I can reasonably assume that details/records of children at Bidura circa 1945-46 will be an absolute no-no without court orders approving same. Peter Mooney 7yrs & Michael Mooney 4yrs, brothers, were admitted to "Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children" 24th July 1865 after their father died and mother was in goal. When they had both turned 13 yrs they were apprenticed out to the men, Carew & May. 3. Dot, You're doing very well. When you type a name into Google put inverted commas around the name eg. "Dot Robertson". There's a lady named Patricia Horwood on the Rootsweb Port Jackson mailing list who is also connected to Charles and Lucy. Her email address is palmsoz@ozemail.com.au I don't know if it is still current but you can give it a try. Also, www.familysearch.org has Charles Augustus Robertson also. Hope this helps.
