Dear Marie, I think you will find they are two different sets of records held by two different government departments. Land Titles Office has had a change of name now too. Dear Jill, If a will was left then the original will is contained in the Probate Packet. Should you try to get a will from the Supreme Court, I think you will find all they do is call the Probate Packet back from State Records, copy the will and send it out to the applicant. On the other hand if no will was left any living relative can apply to share in the estate and in that case they make an affidavit as to how they are related. Sincerely Bill >I have been following this discussion with some interest. > I got two probate packets from State Records at Kingswood, neither of > which
Dear Colleen, Not too many graves have the birthdate on the headstone. The Death Certificate should tell you where and when she was born, and you will have to either get a certificate or transcription of her birth registration. Sincerely,Bill >I have a g-aunt born in 1883 in Goulburn - this is according to her death > certificate which states aged 88 when she died 4.8.1971.
Dear Lyn, Thank you for your kind reply and good advice. I shall certainly follow it, if I ever get that far. I am glad I joined this list. I have heard that in that period, there are incomplete records. I have a marriage in 1876 that I've never been able to find. If you do find the record, the cheapest way is to get a transcription done by one of the 3 or so transcription agents - email addresses can be found on BDM site - I have found Joy Murrin good. Dear Joy, Thank you very much for your kind reply and for looking up the names. It is possible that they changed their Surname. I shall certainly keep it in mind. I found that they had a son Edwin Keith Forth registered here in Wellington in 1893 and sent for his Birth Certificate. It stated that both parents were born in Sydney and married there in 1885. Looking at these 2 dates it would be likely that Edwin Keith was not their first child. Thank you again. Kind regards Inga. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joy" <lyko@aanet.com.au> To: <aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 20, 2006 3:01 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Marriage records Inga I looked at the online NSW indexes for a marriage for an Edwin to a Mary from 1850-1950 and came up with nothing. I did find 1 child with the surname FORD with parents Edwin and Mary. He was born 1887. The only 2 marriages I found for an Edwin FORD to a Mary, were Mary AYRES and Mary JACKSON. I then looked in the Victorian CD and found no children for an Edwin FORTH and a Mary. Where did you get your information from please? Dear Bill, Thank you for your kind and informative reply. I shall certainly follow your advice if I ever find the elusive pair. So far they don't even show up on the NSW BDM indexes. I received an Email from Marg, the List Adm., this morning. She had searched the Indexes and they don't seem to be listed at all. I shall have to try and find some more information on records here in NZ. Perhaps passenger lists might be the answer. Thank you again. The way you will get them is to buy a certificate or transcription. As far as I know that is the only way. Try www.marbract.com.au who is one of the transcription agents. The details transcribed from the register at the Registrar Generals Office are the same as you would get on a certificate, but cheaper. These sound to to me be more like deceased estate files ??????????? These are estate inventories compiled for the assessment of death duty . So no reason to have copy of any will > > So I think wills are obtained from the Supreme Court, > not State Records. The Supreme Court is the generator of Probate records ............. The State Archives is the keeper of such to 1965 . If you want copy of a post 1965 will then you need to contact the Supreme Court . Although early next year Probate packets will be available up to 1966 for the price of photocopying via a personal visit As to what might be in one of these packets if you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au top right hand corner is a search thingy > type in' probate packets' > search and a lot of different refs come up including : http://tinyurl.com/ycwkqd These packets have been available on public access for price of photocopying now for over 2 years . You can access later probate packets but do so you need to be the executor of the will and is costs about $85 from the Supreme Court Is > that other people's experience? I got my g-g-grandfather's Will amongst other documents of his land at the Land Titles Office, but it was a long time ago. I think you will find they are at the Supreme Court now. Marie
I would contact Rookwood again and insist a search is done for her grave site. Each of the religious variations (eg Catholic, C of E, Methodist, Baptist etc.) have a separate office and you may need to phone all of them until you have an answer as to where she is buried. If you have the death certificate it should tell you in which area she is buried in Rookwood, if not it will tell you the religion of the Minister who conducted the burial, so phone the office that is in charge of that religion and they should be able to tell you where she is buried and if there are others in the grave and also family members buried in the adjoining graves. Rookwood is a very large cemetery covering several acres, or hectares in today's measurements. If you give us her name one of us can check the BDM Index and tell you the registration number of her birth registration, then you can apply for a transcription of the birth record which is a lot cheaper than applying for a birth certificate. Patricia, Australia I have a g-aunt born in 1883 in Goulburn - this is according to her death certificate which states aged 88 when she died 4.8.1971. I would just love to know the exact date she was born ie; day and month. I have rung Rookwood (not on records altho she is buried there with her sister) and have rung the funeral people (who haven't records kept back to 1971). Can anyone advise me what else I can do? I have been following this discussion with some interest. I got two probate packets from State Records at Kingswood, neither of which contained wills. They contained a wealth of interesting information - inventories of property, accounts to be finalised after death and so on, but no wills. So I think wills are obtained from the Supreme Court, not State Records. Is that other people's experience? Thanks Jill
Marg Thanks for posting this info, it is some time since I have had a look at the state archives. I have found some probate information on some of my relations. Do you know if they provide photcopies of the information, for a price I am sure. Thanks Howard Hi Joy > Haven't found any online indexes though. > I did mention this in my reply but didnt give exact info If you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au This the main page of NSW State Records web site . It has a huge amount of info in various sections . One of these is named 'Archives Investigator' Click on that and you will get a choice of searches ........ Click on 'simple search' Or http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/simple.asp type in the name of the person who you hoped left a will and keep your fingers crossed ! Never know what might pop up ! If you type in LANDENBERGER, plans for hotel alterations come up. DOLLIN 2 wills and a divorce : BRAMBLE throws up a curious ref .......... Hi Colleen My first thought was that I would apply to the Goulburn School District and see if they have her school records on file in their archives anywhere. In those days most of the population went to church on Sundays so maybe an inquiry to the local churches, also the Goulburn Family History Society, and the Rootsweb Mailing List for that district. Hi all I am trying to track any information on the above arrived in Australia in late 1884 - supposed to be from Norfolk Island, They left England in early 1833, where apparently ship had collera on board and they were of loaded on Norfolk Island with from the N.S.W. BDMS I have found that Reuben married in Sydney in 1895 and Walter marries in Ballina in 1896, it seems Ruben and wife Alice moove to Katoomba where there already seemed to be a family of Esgates. If anyone can shed some light on these brothers it would be most appreciated. Thanks all Liz Norfolk Island
