    2. Jenny W
    3. On her marriage certificate my Great x 2 Grandmother Matilda Ann Sheppard gives her occupation as "Machinist" residing in Sydney. Would anyone be able to suggest what sort of machine or work this might involve? Matilda's father had been a soldier in the 99th and 12th Regiments and Matilda had travelled around Australia to his various postings until her parents were posted to NZ in 1863 and Matilda, then 19, remainded behind in Sydney. 3. Dear Alison, Asylum records in the main are held by State Records, however there is a 110 year restriction on viewing them. You can however apply, proving relationship, to the Health Department to view the one for your ancestor. That written approval is taken to State Records and the archivist flags off other entries so you can view just the one. I think also there is a book there on Newington. Did it become Lidcombe Old Mens Home? If so it is in Joseph Street LIDCOMBE on the Lidcombe side of where the train line crosses the road at the REGENTS PARK turnoff. It is now, I think, part of the Forensic Medicine branch of government and a flash building. In 1968 I worked at Lidcombe and it was a run down set of old buildings. Sincerely,Bill > Can anyone tell me if the Newington asylum (Granville/Parramatta) still > stands, and if so what it now is? If not, what is on the site where it

    3. Good afternoon list, This is an extract from www.records.nsw.gov.au dealing with Probates which may help some on the list who have difficulty in obtaining these records. Sincerely,Bill "For those who cannot visit we are offering the Probate Packet Copying Service. The fee for this service is $45.00. This includes the copies, the administrative fee and postage/handling. What we will copy - We will copy the packet contents in its entirety or copies to the value of $30.00. We cannot look for particular documents as this would involve research and we do not undertake research on behalf of enquirers. If the number of documents in the packet exceeds copies to the value of $30.00 you will be contacted and asked if you are willing to pay an additional amount to have the remainder of the packet copied. If you do not wish to pay the additional amount, the copies will be made in the order in which the documents are stored in the packet"

    3. Colleen these are the only 2 registered in Goulburn, however, she could have been registered in a smaller town outside Goulburn. 1883 - Amy Florence Grace ROWE, parents John and Janet, Reg. Place Goulburn, Reg. No. 11221 1883- Grace Frances WILSON, parents Thomas and Mary Ann, Reg. Place Goulburn, Reg. No. 11479 Patricia, Australia A big thank you for all who are trying to help me trace the exact birthdate of my g-aunt. Many suggested getting her birth certificate - this is what I am trying to find. She was forstered by the WALKER family and all I know is that her name was Grace - that is why I need her exact birthdate so I can look for all 'Grace's' born in Goulburn on that date. This will, I hope, ascertain her parents/parent name. 3. Dear Howard, With the Probate Number anyone can go to State Records 9-5 M/F and 10-4 Saturday. >From that number you look up another register in the Reading Room which gives you a container number. Fill out a form requesting that file come to the reading room, limit of four per trip, which in rough terms go hourly on the half hour. You can then view the file, flagging what you want copied, fill out a copy form and submit it. Unless you want a lot of copying, and they are busy, your copies will be ready by the time you wish to leave. 45cents per A4 and $2 A3. You may use a digital camera on most files with permission, without flash. One of the transcription agents I believe will do it for you for something like $25 per file plus copying, but this is only from information passed on to me. Sincerely,Bill > > Thanks for posting this info, it is some time since I have had a look at > the state archives. I have found some probate information on some of my > relations.
