I am researching my father's cousin, William SOPWITH (b. 1 April 1906, North Shields, UK). He emigrated to Australia with his parents William and Magdalene Robinson SOPWITH 1926 when he was 20 years old. He married Ella Mary SHARP in 1952, but I have not been able to trace any children (who would be my second cousins). His mother, Magdalene, was my grandaunt, and died in Parramatta, NSW in 1961. 3. Dear Hazel, I think you need to be more specific as to which state he actually immigrated to, as each state has records of their own. If you check the NSW Probate Index you may find his mother left an estate, therefore papers for that would be at State Records KINGSWOOD, and may name any grandchildren. 1. [ANS] BROWN rellies
    2. Joan
    3. Sorry for not locating the Browns. I thought the bushfire smoke had abated enough for me to have my wits about me properly. Apparently not. I'll do this and obviously should retreat until the Blue Mountains fire is out, hopefully in a couple of weeks. In 1813 Elizabeth nee WINCH lived in Lower Pitt Street & was out walking with her beau John BROWN. Elizabeth was the lass accosted by 2 of Macquarie's inebriated off duty soldiers. During the fracas one hit William Holness with a paling or similar, causing death. As soldiers were tried by soldiers, they received 6 months restricted to Parramatta and fined 1/- each. The result was Gov. Macquarie requested London that soldiers not be able to hold land while serving etc and also a key factor in the 73rd Regiment moving on to India. Court case is in Historical Records of Australia Vol 8 with both Elizabeth & John giving evidence. I know nothing of their children other than of Richard - my ancestor. I have located him in Woolloomlloo, in the 1870s the family lived in Wilmot Street, Sydney (between George & Pitt Streets, opposite the Hoyts Theatre complex) and later he was in The Rocks area. Richard died in 1874 in Goodlet Street. So inner Sydney of the times, certainly not among the wealthier residents! Joan

    1. [ANS] Where are my BROWN rellies?
    2. Joan
    3. Richard BROWN was born c.1824-1825, the 4th child of convict John BROWN (Ann 2 1810) and Elizabeth WINCH. According the the 1828 Census his older siblings were John, William, Jane & Elizabeth and he had a younger brother George. If Richard's siblings were anywhere as useful in populating the colony as he was there must be so many descendants I have would like to make contact with. Richard married 1) Margaret DUIGAN 1845 Issue: Harriett, Sarah (died as infant), Jane, George Married 2) Margaret MUNRO 1855 Issue: Emily Maud, John, Elizabeth, Hannah, Thomas, James, Richard and David (died as infant). I know of the children of Emily Maud and Elizabeth and have worked out some details of the others . Who out there has any connection with my BROWN line? Surely with such a tribe there must be at least another descendant interested in the family history? Joan
