McMurtries had a show factory in that area too.
Hi Listers, While we are discussing shoe factories, does anyone remember KENT SHOES in the 1940s. They began in an ex butchers shop in Norton St Leichhardt around 1945 making sandals and later set up a factory in Petersham to make shoes. The factory was burnt down after a couple of years of operation. Any additional information would be appreciated. Regards, Rex.

Hi Louise Mine made the famous "E H Sydney" cycle shoes and "Little Lady" girls and maids shoes - copied from their letterhead. My father remembers making cycle shoes for (Sir) Hubert Opperman. Those were the days when shoes were made in Australia. My father then went on to teach bootmaking at Sydney Tech but eventually they had so few students he was made redundant. No one wanted to learn. I still have some of his old text books. Regards Janeen
Thanks for that tip Gary. My g grandfather was a yeast maker and I have been trying to find archives on the Sydney breweries. Haven't had much success in the Mitchell. Will now follow up these archives you mentioned. Have you used the Noel Butlin archives yourself? Will post this on the listserve as well, as I might find others with knowledge of the former Sydney breweries. Alison Giles

A clicker works in the boot trade. My family lived in Redfern and all worked in the boot trade - some as clickers. There were several boot/shoe factories in Redfern. My family owned one in Elizabeth st Redfern , but later than you mention - around the 1930s. Janeen McLachlan
Hi List, Hope this isn't too big a yarn for the list but I am new to this list and trying to track some information on Redfern hotels from about 1885 to 1905ish My GGrandmother was the licensee of the Bedford Hotel in Wells St Redfern when her husband died at aged 31yrs in 1897 of some sort of liver damage I guess a workplace injury. He was Ernest John Palmer. Gran was Mary Isabella (Hodges) Mary then married my GGrandfather James Costello that same year that Ernest died 1897, ON that Marriage Cert info says that she was a publican at the Bedford Hotel and James was a 'clicker' but appears he was running the York Hotel also in Wells St Redfern. Long winded story to ask the list if there may be any info or photos available on the Wells St Hotels. I believe they are no longer there. My Grandmother Marjorie Eileen Costello was born in the Bedford Hotel in 1899 Any assistance would be terrific, thanks and Regards Rod McDonald Sunshine Coast Qld

Up to you whether to use this service or go to the Qld SL and look up the SMH films yourself This web site is supported by many volunteers . Some do indexing from the various newspapers, other have CDs of scans of quite a few years of the SMH . I have CDs of scans from the SMH 1976 and 1977 . Other go to various libraries and look up the actual films It does help you if you read the info thats given Happy Hunting Bye MargM Sydney List Admin

Have you tried Googling the Ryerson Index? There are a few SOPWITHS recorded there. Joe
Hello Marg, Thank you for your help. Harry Forsyth SOPWITH was William's younger brother. I should be able to search the Sydney Morning Herald at our State library. You have given me the date 1976 for Harry's death. Do you also have the dates for William & Ella Sopwith's deaths? I was the one who requested that William's war service files be made available online and they were very informative. Best wishes Hazel

Hi Hazel, This may help... looking at the Ryerson Index it would appear that William Sopwith died in 1993 & his wife, Ella, in 1988. If you subscribe to the DPS mailing and request a lookup of the following death notices, they may give you more information... if they had children the death notice may state ... loving daughter Jane etc... 1. 'Subscribe to the Rootsweb mailing list DPS-SYDNEY. To do this (if you are not already a subscriber), send an email to DPS-SYDNEY-request@rootsweb.com . The subject line should contain the single word "subscribe" (but without the quotes), and the body of the email should be blank. ' 2. Complete the details in the form below. Please ensure your email address is correct, as without this you will never receive any answer to your request. (also make sure you type in the 'published date' not the 'death' date) http://arkangles.com/ryerson/request.php To view index... http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/ausds374.htm SOPWITH,Ella Mary 21 JAN 1988 Death late of Ashfield 22 JAN 1988 SMH SOPWITH, Gweneth Marie (Sister) 09 OCT 1993 80 Death late of Maroubra 11 OCT 1993 SMH SOPWITH, Harry Forsyth 28 NOV 1976 Death at Maroubra 02 DEC 1976 SMH SOPWITH, William 31 AUG 1993 Death late of Croydon Park 01 SEP 1993 SMH *************************** Perhaps William & Ella didn't have any children, as William would have been 46 when he married. Hazel, I have looked in Victorian Death Index 1921-1985 and found no SOPWITH of any spelling variation, I also looked for a marriage in South Australia from 1917-1937 but no luck either. You can get a transcription of the death certificate for Magdalene from Joy Murrin Transcription Service which will only cost $15. Her web site is at: http://www.joymurrin.com.au/ That will or should tell you what other children she had. Also if you can get to a Library that has microfilm of newspapers, you may be able to look up the death notices yourself. I know we have the Sydney Morning Herald at our State Library in Victoria. Hope this helps. Regards Joy Light
