i am looking for information about William Miles and his wife Eliza Hunt. Both were born in Tasmania and lived at Gladesville. Thank you for your time. Genie
Have you thought that perhaps the surname has been wrongly transcribed, after all the correct pronunciation is Macky to rhyme with black sky. My mother was Helen Crawford Hendry, her sister Jean Harvey Hendry. This was after their grandmother's maiden names. I am Robert Hendry Horton the Hendry from my mother's maiden name. I was never very conscious of my uncles having middle names. Although the Scots have a habit of handing down Christian names. I have two other cousins named Robert. Protestant Irish in my limited experience are given to using the middle name as the normal name to address some one with. Hence John Watson Smythe is known as Watson. Having said that, there appears no evidence to suggest that there is a surfeit of Archibalds in the family line, which would be the only sane reason for reason using the second Christian name. Dear Judy, For that period the NSW Probate Index is in one index so it may be worth looking there. If he had something to leave he should be in there as Probate of the Will, or Administration of the estate had to take place. The papers relating to the Probate are held at State Records KINGSWOOD and available up to c1964 at this time. See www.records.nsw.gov.au Sincerely,Bill > Hi List. > Is there any Directories in Sydney and for what years. > I have a Archibald Mckay who was a Stonemason in Sydney. I have him in the
Thank you Laurel for your interest. I have read that article and will investigate it further. The John Ovens I am interested in married my 2xGAunt Georgina Green, who died only a few months after their marriage. The 56th Regiment left for Madras in 1831 and I suspect Lt Ovens may have left with them. The Green family returned to Australia in 1836 and I was wondering what happened to Lt. Ovens. ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` Jenny McCarthy Brightwaters N.S.W. on beautiful Lake Macquarie

The John Ovens who died in 1825 was Major John Ovens after whom the Ovens river in Victoria is named. Part of the final paragraph in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' article on him reads "Several writers have confused Major Ovens with Lieutenant John Ovens, also in the 57th regiment at that time. Georgina Ovens was the wife of the lieutenant, and not of the major, who divided his estate among his brothers and sister." The footnote reads: HRA (1) 11-15; Sydney Gazette, 13Dec. 1825; Truth (Syd), 4 July 1909; Army Lists, 1821-25. The article was written by E.W. Dunlop.I think this can be found on the internet. Thanks so much Lorette! That may explain why he was living at Wangaratta but died at Heidelberg - probably at the Repatriation Hospital. It also means he fibbed about his age. He is supposed to have been born around 1891. If he was born in 1896 he would have been 14 years (instead of 9 years) younger than his wife and was only 18 when his daughter was born! I will NOT make comments about toy boys! Perhaps on the other hand I should keep an open mind in case the WW11 fellow may have been his son? Jenny "found Albert Hessey enlisted WW2 born 28 Janury 1896 Leeds Yorkshire England Next of Kin Matilde Hessey enlisted 1940 victoria - discharged 1940 http://www.naa.gov.au/the_collection/recordsearch.html also listed http://www.ww2roll.gov.au\ I feel that this is your Albert Hessey he may have married before coming to Australia regards Lorette" ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. Hi List. Is there any Directories in Sydney and for what years. I have a Archibald Mckay who was a Stonemason in Sydney. I have him in the Sands Directoey 1875. His youngest son was born 1886 and married 1906. His mother gave consent to the marriage as he was aged 20. His father was deceased. I cannot find the death of Archibald McKay.His wife Margaret died 1919 and the first Thomas died 1876 are at Rookwood Cemetery. I have searched everystate and cant find him. He was born 1834 Inverness Scotland to Duncan & Christian McKay. Any suggestions on which certificate i could get, that would help me in finding his death. Archibald erected the headstone at Rookwood when his son was burried in 1876. Thankyou Judy
