Good afternoon List, A Sydney domiciled ancestor's death and funeral notices dated 1921 refer to his employment with the London Bank of Australia Limited. A Google search regarding this bank was unsuccessful but I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of it? I would be most grateful to receive any information. G'day there, I'm new to NSW Probate Packets and I want to get some, but am confused about the numbering system used to order them. I'd be grateful for your assistance. I've got the Pre-order Probate Packets form from http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/pre-order_probate_packets_2793.asp My problem is with the Series Number, the Packet Number and the Container/Box Number. I figure there's no point in pre-ordering if I'm not sure what these mean. I went to the State Library and looked up the Probate Index, located the people I'm interested in, and noted the 6-digit number for each of them. What is that number used for in my order? I presume that I select the Series Number as being the date range outlined on the Pre-Order form, but am still in doubt about the Packet and Container/Box number. Advice on these basic questions will be much appreciated. Phil Young Glebe NSW

I also wondered about the fact that he says his father came out as a gaol warder. I looked at the list of convicts on the First Fleet and saw that there was a John SMALL. I don't have access to a list of other persons (military etc) that came out so can't be certain of this, but from what I have read, quite a few of the better behaved convicts very soon became warders. If this was the case, it would not be something you would want known in 1892. These days a convict is almost a badge of honour! Hi all I agree this is an interesting article but do know there would have been many white children born in the colony between Jan 1788 and Sept 1789 - eg 6 children named James were registered in 1788 and 5 more in 1789! Oldest Australian Australia Australia has just lost its "oldest inhabitant." Mr William SMALL, of Ryde, New South Wales, who, according to the SYDNEY DAILY TELEGRAPH, at the time of his death was the oldest living Australian in the colonies, has just succumbed to influenza at the age of ninety-six years. He was born, according to our contemporary, in a farmhouse at Ryde on December 14th, 1796, a few years after the arrival of the first fleet, his father having reached the colony with the first batch of convicts as a gaol warder. In his youth he was taught boot making, but his health being bad he was advised to seek some other occupation. He, therefore, entered the Police Force, and after ten years' service during which time he rose to the rank of Inspector, he again changed his occupation and sought to earn his livelihood as a tiller of the soil. He had a wonderfully retentive memory, and could remember distinctly events which occurred almost a century ago. Dear Colleen, Try www.records.nsw.gov.au There should be an Archives in Brief dealing with Police Gazettes. I know some of them are copied to microfilm. Sincerely,Bill > Hi - what years to Police Gazettes start and finish. I am interested in > August 1835 to January 1836.
Hi Colleen, there exist a wealth of police records with the earliest starting around 1830 with the 'Blue Books'. Google in NSW state records and on their homepage click on index and put in P for police and from there you'll be able to learn about the documents you're after. Some records may be held in the city (like the gazettes) others may be held in Kingswood at the State Records office. Some of the indexes on the state records homepage allows you to enter in a surname and get details of constables, victims and criminals. There exist plenty photos in the archives relating to crime. Good luck, let me know if you get stuck, Alison
Hi - what years to Police Gazettes start and finish. I am interested in August 1835 to January 1836. Many thanks Colleen Central Coast NSW
Dear Bill, I know they are moving but they will still be at 120 Kent Street. and as the person enquiring lives in the Country & would find it difficult to get to State Records, a letter to the SAG will be answered. I am sure they have some of the Police Gazettes on CD. Marie
