Hi Rex I was browsing through the archives of the Sydney List as I have been on holidays for a month and noted your enquiry re the above. My great grandfather, Frederick Peter SAUNDERS, was Bank Messenger for this Bank from the early 1850s till the 1880s and my grandmother was born in the premises above the bank. My enquiries led me to the ANZ archives at 100 Queen Street, Melbourne, and the following is an excerpt of the information I received from the ANZ Archives Manager in January 2005 (by email). 'You are correct in stating that the London Chartered Bank of Australia (1852-1923 was restructured in 1893 as the London Bank of Australia Ltd (1893-1921); this bank was then taken over in 1921 by the English, Scottish and Australian Bank (1852-1970); and subsequently the ES&A joined with the ANZ Bank Ltd to form the ANZ Banking Group (1970 to present).' 'The ANZ Archives is fortunate to possess a substantial number of records from some of its antecedent banks. Unfortunately, the Archives is not so fortunate with the records of the former London Chartered Bank of Australia and the London Bank of Australia. For example, some staff records do exist however they do not list Frederick Peter Saunders.' As you can see, I was unsuccessful in my quest, but I hope this might help you. Incidentally, there are some great pictures of the London Chartered Bank in George Street, Sydney, on the net. Google images should bring them up. Noel
Hi Chris, Between June and August 1984, according to my great-grandfather's account book, he was doing work for Mr Backhouse of Darley or Darling Street (I can't quite work it out). The work was valued at 32 pounds. Other work was being done for him through 1895, and then again in 1896, this time Mr Backhouse - Belmore St. I'm afraid that's all I can tell you regarding this name. Hi I posted a message earlier this year asking if anyone had information on a Matthew SULLIVAN who was living in Randwick in 1918. I have since obtained a copy of his MC in 1917 to Annie Maria FAUNT nee COLLINS. His parents were Thomas Joseph SULLIVAN and Caroline ROSE ( both deceased by 1917) Matthew was born in Cork Ireland and he arrived here with his parents on the ship "Wakatipu" in 1876 aged 1. I believe there were 6 other children born in NSW after they arrived and they were Henry James SULLIVAN 1879, Caroline Christina SULLIVAN 1881, William J 1884, Joseph P 1887, Thomas R 1891 and Ernest R 1896 all born around Paddington/Sydney and St Leonards except Henry who is registered in Young. Would be very grateful to hear from anyone who is researching any of these family members or has any information. I cannot find in NSW death of Matthew SULLIVAN. Regards, Dianne
It depends on what state and where you are interested. There is a lot of information on Randwick Destitute Children Home on the nsw state records. I also have a book named '.....vivious and rebellious'? - Life at the Male Orphans School, Sydney and Liverpool, 1819 - 1850. Fairfiled City Museum and Gallery put it together. There is more at http://www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/museumgallery and the phone number 02-9604 3993. Hope this helps you? Hi Listers, Thomas LYNCHEY, sometimes LYNCHY and sometimes LYNCH arrived from the Isle of Man in 1835 [Mary Ann(4)]. I have a copy of his ToL # 44/1537 issued 14th May 1847 at Muswellbrook and allowing him to remain "in the District of Moreton Bay". Moreton bay seems a long way from Muswellbrook but he may have had a connection their. I have not found his Certificate of Freedom which should have been granted by 1847 unless he got up to further mischief, nor have I found a death or a marriage. Can any Lister assist please? HAT- www.hat-archive.com has a 16000 entry database of people associated with the Australian theatre between the years 1860-1960. It also has photos and articles about Australian Theatre History. If you had ancestors involved in the Australian Theatre, you may find them at HAT- www.hat-archive.com. This months updates; The database ( after almost being lost) has now got 16000 entries, an addition of 200 since the last update. I have added an article about the Maskelyne and Devant company that visited Australia in 1908. I also added a couple of pictures. I am currently looking for people who worked with the WEA or Brisbane Repertory company during the 1930s-1950s, I have been given some pictures from the period and would like to have the people in them identified. If you can help, please email me. I now have a live journal at http://theotherhat.livejournal.com/ Mark St Leon, Australia's famous circus historian, is presenting a five part series on 'Australia's Travelling Showpeople', through the WEA in Sydney. Please ring the WEA if you are interested in attending any sessions. Other than that, please have a look at the site, and don't forget my book on Houdini which is available through Ginninderra Press at http://www.ginninderrapress.com.au, just search for Houdini. Searching for information re. Thomas Sayer CARTER and his family, especially of his wife Harriet (nee NEWTON). Thomas and Harriet were married in Bristol in 1846 and came to Australia sometime after 1851 with two children. Thomas was a watchmaker and lived at Mudgee in the 1850's. He may have moved to Sydney in the 1860's. Thomas died in the 1880's. Harriet Carter's mother was my great, great grandmother (Rachel NEWTON). Allan Jamieson Burnie, Tasmania

Hello Phil, Sorry for the delay. I had a chance to get away for a week, and have been trying to catch up since. In regard to Mr A Batty, between Feb and Mar 1894 my great grandfather Edwin EDWARDS carried out painting and decorating services on a terrace in Reynolds St Balmain to the value 39 pounds, charged to Mr Batty. The money was received on account in weekly instalments. He seemed to be doing odd bits for the Battys (there's some alliteration for you!) through 1894, including 4s for painting Mr Battys front door in July, 3s in Oct, 10 pounds for Mrs Batty's House in October, and 11s 6d for Miss Batty's house in Smith St in December. In 1895, we have an entry "Received from Mr A Batty on account of Mrs DAVIDSON's house, Smith Street" - 90 pounds! This work was carried out between April 1895 and end July 1895. Batty was obviously a generous papa. The 90 pounds was for painting/wallpapering and glazing. Right through 1895, he was doing work for Mrs HARRISON, Mr A. BATTY and Mrs DAVIDSON, so he seems to have been their painter of choice. I will add here that he was also at one time head decorator at the Hotel Australia, and was a specialist in all the paint finishes of the time - marbling, ebonising, graining, etc. I imagine that this is what some of these clients were requiring. The work on Mrs Davidson's house is listed in great detail, including a lot of wood graining. The house seems quite large. In late 1895 he was doing work for Mr Davidson of Smith St, on a terrace in Anne St, value 38 pounds. In 1987, for Mr A BATTY, cottages in Adolphus St, about 20 pounds. Thats about it. Hope it is of some interest. Hi everyone I hope this list covers the Parramatta region. I am wondering if anyone has more details or a connection to the following family. My info so far is very limited. Parents - William LYONS & Margaret Mary CROSTON Daughter - Margaret LYONS born 1841 at Parramatta This information has come from Margaret's baptism cert. Her sponser was an Eliza Lilly. Williams occupation is a carpenter. I cannot find siblings or marriage of parents. Too many options to eliminate for deaths of parents. So I am looking for some assistance. I have tried a few shipping lists, but with no clue as to where they are from or if there are more siblings I am in the same boat. Many thanks in advance Maria Thomas LAKE MUNMORAH, NSW
Thank you Bill, for this guidance. Although I do not have the Sands Directory I do have a very large collection of NSW Research CDs and Fiche. Your suggestion led me to the NSW 1904 Post Office Directory and there it was at 261 George Street with many branches throughout NSW. All I need to do now is find who bought them out and it this regard I will get in touch with Westpac's Archives, who are most approachable. As a retired Banker myself I have many ancestors in the Roberts line involved in Banking and insurance. In fact a G grandfather was Chairman of Colonial Mutual Sydney for over 25 years and was also mayor in 1879. He had a bit of an involvement with Sir Henry Parkes also. Dear Phil, The series number is dependant on the time frame of the Probate. Each one starts at one, so you have to be sure of the series number, otherwise they can not retrieve the right packet. Dear Phil, You will not get the Box or Container Number without going to State Records. Pre Ordering staff have to do it for you. You are allowed four by pre order, however if you are there at 9.10am, then by 9.20am you can look at four numbers yourself and request them next run, 9.30am. Before 10.20am you can look at another 4 and order them for the 10.30am run. It takes 20-30 minutes for them to come up as they are located at the back of the building. Look at Archives in Brief No 84 on www.records.nsw.gov.au and I will also send you a message that Martyn Killion submitted to the SAG list recently which was interesting.
