Hi Dianne Yes to all State records have a indexes to divorces to 1974 in a large series of fiche They have the surviving files up to 1930 & you can get copy for just cost of photocopying the docs Has > anyone done this and how much are the papers please? For 1931 -1974 you need to apply via the NSW Supreme Court . Cost is approx $55 plus photocopying which was $2.20 per A4 page a couple of years ago Aside from divorce files State Records have a deal of other info on divorces .... They have random transcripts of complete court cases, judges note books etc . For any divorce before about 1939 , providing you have some dates it can be worth while checking out The Truth newspapers, on film at the NSW State Library If you type 'divorce' into State Records ' site search' on its main page a lot of refs will come up HTH Bye MargM Sydney List Admin
Dear Dianne, Someone else may have better ideas on this than me. Archives in Brief 77 at www.records.nsw.gov.au is a two page information sheet on Divorces. I know there is an index on microfiche at State Records. The one that I tried to get there were no papers for, but I think the only papers really are the notebooks of the Judge, or a transcript of the proceedings. Sincerely,Bill > > Hi > Could someone tell me if I am correct with the following information. I > have > an ancestor who was divorced and re-married. Unfortunately neither of the
Hi Could someone tell me if I am correct with the following information. I have an ancestor who was divorced and re-married. Unfortunately neither of the marriage certificates have a reference to the divorce, other than to state that the bride was a divorcee. It would have to have been sometime between 1928 and Feb 1944. Would I be correct in saying that I would need to get someone to check the divorce Index for me at State Records and if the divorce was after 1930, once I have a reference I would need to contact the Family Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of NSW for a copy of the papers? Has anyone done this and how much are the papers please? Thankyou for your help. Regards, Dianne
Hi Dianne, if you log into the state records of nsw website, click on A-Z index, put in divorce and you will be asked to log in the name of either the complainant or the 'other spouse' (can't think of the term of the spouse being served the divorce - Bill Shute will help us out here! Thanks Bill!). Anyway, search through the results (if you're not getting one make sure to use all surnames you can think that the couple may have used). You will be given the records number. My best advice is to visit the state records building in Kingswood, nsw in person with the records number as the records can be quite extensive. I was handed a package of about 10 ribbon bound documents all beautifully handwritten (some copies by clerks), but also the original letters written by my g g grandmother opposing the divorce. Their entire relationship was written out by both parties and held immense information including all residences they had, as well as many names of third parties. Copies can also be made of any of the documents. My search was in the 1883-4 years. And if any listers are interested my search was of the marriage between Francis Piper and Catherine Boutcher. Good luck and give me a buzz if you need a hand. Alison Giles
My apologies for giving the wrong address with my previous mail on this subject. It should have read: "Saturday at St. Peters" on the 3rd of February from 1.30pm -4.30pm, may interest some genealogists. The church of St. Peters, Cooks River, 187 Princes Highway St. Peters, is open for viewing as is its historic graveyard. Bob and Laurel Horton. St. Peters Cooks River History Group.
"Saturday at St. Peters" on the 3rd of February from 1.30pm -4.30pm, may interest some genealogists. The church of St. Peters, Cooks River,at 1 Princes Highway St. Peters is open for viewing as is its historic graveyard. There are 'do it yourself' tours of both. Members of the history group will be on site to answer any questions and visitors can consult our data base of marriages, baptisms and burials for the 19th century and microfiche of the 20th century records of baptisms and marriages. Other documents, e.g. Vestry Meeting minute books are also there to view. On request D.V.D.'s of: The History of the Church; The Stained Glass Windows of St. Peters and Reading the Symbols of St. Peters, can be shown. Recently the history group photographed more gravestones and vaults. It is now hoped that all headstones and vaults however worn or fragmented have been photographed. The database has been invaluable in identifying badly worn headstones, as Sydney sandstone does wear very easily. Partial information, such as the age at death,or the year of death coupled with a Christian or first name have meant that some which we could not identify are now, with the aid of the database, properly identified. Of course our book on the graveyard, 'Grave Reflections is still available, as is 'Stanley' a young man's colonial experience. The first book has a complete burial listing and potted biographies of many buried in the graveyard. 'Stanley' is the edited letters of the curate at the church in the 1870's and describes the people, both rich and poor, and not only St. Peter's at that time but also Melbourne and country Victoria, Sydney and N.S.W., including Canberra, Brisbane and Queensland. If your ancestors came out on the Licolnshire in 1872, this also may be the book for you! Saturday at St. Peters is a free activity which includes tea, coffee and biscuits. Looking forward to seeing some of you there. Bob and Laurel Horton St. Peters Cooks River History Group.
Hi Chris, Darling st Starts at Balmain Wharf. I can rember visiting my Grandfathyer who lived in School St near the Wharf. The Trams could not Brake down the Steep hill near the Wharf nor could they climb up. They coupled onto a large motor box that provided braking and climbing power. Darling street connected Balmain - Rozell - Lillyfield and Leichardt. I think that the continuation of Darling St [Balmain Rd] was previously called Darling St. Leichhardt council has a very good historical section in its Library and they have old maps, rate books etc. regards Peter O'Donoghue
Hi Rex I was browsing through the archives of the Sydney List as I have been on holidays for a month and noted your enquiry re the above. My great grandfather, Frederick Peter SAUNDERS, was Bank Messenger for this Bank from the early 1850s till the 1880s and my grandmother was born in the premises above the bank. My enquiries led me to the ANZ archives at 100 Queen Street, Melbourne, and the following is an excerpt of the information I received from the ANZ Archives Manager in January 2005 (by email). 'You are correct in stating that the London Chartered Bank of Australia (1852-1923) was restructured in 1893 as the London Bank of Australia Ltd (1893-1921); this bank was then taken over in 1921 by the English, Scottish and Australian Bank (1852-1970); and subsequently the ES&A joined with the ANZ Bank Ltd to form the ANZ Banking Group (1970 to present).' 'The ANZ Archives is fortunate to possess a substantial number of records from some of its antecedent banks. Unfortunately, the Archives is not so fortunate with the records of the former London Chartered Bank of Australia and the London Bank of Australia. For example, some staff records do exist however they do not list Frederick Peter Saunders.' As you can see, I was unsuccessful in my quest, but I hope this might help you. Incidentally, there are some great pictures of the London Chartered Bank in George Street, Sydney, on the net. Google images should bring them up. Noel
Louise, many thanks for supplying me with the Backhouse information.... it was much appreciated. Chris
Good evening, I have turned my attention to my FAY family. One member was John James FAY, b. 1887 Sydney, who became a well-known (so I am told) pianist, working under the name of John Carlton FAY. I would be interested in hearing from any connections to the FAY name, and anyone who may have heard of John. I believe John may have married a Jean Kyle in 1923, but have no idea whether there were any children. I am told he died an alcoholic at a home for destitute men in Darlinghurst, and NSW records have an entry for his death in 1949. Louise Melbourne
I would advise anyone with ancestors employed by the old ES&A bank to contact the archivist at ANZ. Several years ago I received copious records for my great grandfather who was a bank manager up till 1912. They were incredibly helpful. Hello all, How is this for a long horizontal relationship. I don't know what else to call it. Joseph North b. 1825 in London, married Sarah Frances Scoffin, born 1855 in Lincolnshire, who subsequently married George N. Lamb, b. 1869 Boston, Mass, who then lived in a de facto marriage with Mollie Olsen, born Sydney 1895, died 1948, California. There is a 123 year spread between the birth of Joseph and the death of Mollie. All this because Sarah Scoffin married firstly a man 30 years her senior, and then one 14 years her junior! Not to be outdone, her second husband George, having married a woman 14 years his senior, then married one 25 years his junior. What a world of difference in lifestyles and prevailing attitudes there must have been over that time frame. Louise Reynolds Melbourne
