    3. Hi Joan, I gave the date in my first message. It was in 1883. My ggrandmother died and the death certificate says "Operation Collapse" and the address was only Marrickville Road, Marrickville. I don't know what other hospitals were operating in those days. Clara Jane Grant had a baby 4 months before she died and the baby Eva Emily died at 10 weeks, 4 weeks before her mother. I really don't want to pay money for the baby's death certificate. I'm not sure it will give me any additional information. Though I suspect in those days babies were born at home, but because the death certificate for Clara Jane says "operation" it may have been in a hospital. 3. Lesley, you did not give a date. There was more than one private hospital in Marrickville Road eg Allerton Private Hospital which I think may have had a different name at different times. I am absolutely positive, as not only was I born there, but it my aunt was the matron and owner. I know of a gentleman born in a hospital in Marrickville Road, and we are not sure but think it could have been another one. Joan

    3. Thank you to the kind people who answered me regarding Marrickville Hospital.. Apparently the hospital closed in 1999, but thanks to Laurel for the information that it opened after my ggrandmother died in 1883. The death certificate just said Marrickville Road, Marrickville, she must have died at home, I might try and find out if RPAH have records, maybe she had her operation there. I remember the hospital very well, passing it almost every day on my way to school, etc. in the 40s and 50s, including the day of the Sydenham train smash. I was 14 at the time, and after walking along the tracks to Sydenham Station, I was able to get a tram to Marrickville Hospital, and went to catch a bus home. However, by this time I was crying and very very upset, (as you would be after walking through the results of the crash), and while I was waiting a nurse came out and brought me some sal volatile (which was used for nerves in those days). When I left the district in 1959 when I married it was very run down, so I guess it is time to put it out to pasture. 3. This might help. I typed Marrickville Hospital into Google and a lot of websites came up. I worked for an ENT Surgeon in the late 1970's and he used to operate there and held an OP Clinic there every week. I don't know if it is still being used as a General Hospital. Hilda Cooper, Sydney.

    3. My grandmother did her midwifery training at something called "The Home Training School and Lying-In Hospital" Stanley St., Newtown in 1901-1902, could this be relevant ? I have never been able to find anything further about it. Cheers, Lynne

    3. "A Marrickville Cottage Hospital was opened on 10th June 1899 by the Governor of New South Wales Earl Beauchamp. After a site in Lilydale Street had been purchased for £ 334, a hospital with 12 beds was erected by J. Elstone, a local builder at a cost of £2,727." Quotation taken from Marrickville People and Places, by Meader Cashman and Carrolan. It would appear that it is not Marrickville hospital. 3. Hello list, My ggrandmother Clara Jane Grant died (according to her death certificate) in 1883 at Marrickville Road, Marrickville. The cause of death says "operation collapse". Her baby daughter died a month before her mother aged 10 weeks. She left two very small daughters including my grandmother. I suspect it could have been in Marrickville Hospital but haven't been able to find any records. State Records come up negative for them. Can anyone help as to where I can look next. Thanks, Lesley on the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney

    1. Re: [ANS] "Witness" on Birth Certificate.
    2. Patricia Hayward
    3. The witnesses to a birth are usually those who were present at the birth, and can testify to the child being the natural child of the mother, the witnesses are usually No. 1 the doctor if one was present, Nos. 2 and 3 are the midwives. If only the father was mentioned it would mean he did deliver the baby or did not give the names of other witnesses and his was used in place of the names of the midwives or midwife. Only in unusual circumstances was the father present at a birth - this was women's business and men were not allowed to be present at a birth. Having father there is a relatively new idea. Patricia, Australia Are witnesses on Birth Certificates witnesses to the birth ie present at the birth or witnesses to the registration? The pertinent column on the certificates is simply headed "Witnesses". I had always assumed that they were people who were prepared to attest that the birth had taken place or who witnessed the registration. However it seems that a transcription agent heads this column "Present at the birth". The certificates have spaces for three witnesses. Looking at some of my certificates I see that just the father's name is written. "None" is written next to the other two witness spots. Does this then mean that the father delivered the baby? Conversely if the father's name is not put down as a witness does this mean that he wasn't there at the time? 3. Dear Rusheen, The "not present" means that the baby was not taken to the registration at the office. I have always believed that the witnesses to the birth were the midwife/doctor and many I have indicate this. Sincerely,Bill > Are witnesses on Birth Certificates witnesses to the birth ie present at > the > birth or witnesses to the registration?

    3. 667 King St, St Peters is situated between Goodsell St and May St, St Peters, on the western side opposite Sydney Park. There are two two-storeyed houses, between a factory and a row of shops. One of those houses would be 667. There is a brothel called Amore in one of the shops and it is 673 King St. St Peters. The confusion is that King St is Newtown and it continues for two blocks into St Peters before changing name to Princes Highway which starts at May St and goes southwards. The restaurant on the corner of May St is 1 Princes Highway, St Peters.
