Dear Bill, Thank you very much for the tip, I will make a trip to the AIGS or GSV & follow up on that. Thanks again, Yvonne -----Original Message----- Dear Yvonne, You would get an idea where the store was from the Sands Directory of Sydney Residents which was published almost annually from 1858 to 1932. There is a section of the directory which under Parramatta Council you will find it goes along each side of the street listing occupants. It is on microfiche, and you will probably find it at a genealogical society. Sincerely, Bill.
Hi List I'm doing research into WILLIAM PICKERING and ELIZABETH WHITAKER, who came to Australia from Yorkshire England between 1880 and 1882. They were married in BURNLEY, LANCASHIRE in 1863 and had 5 children:- MARY E, JOHN, JOSEPH, JAMES, WILLIAM, and ELIZA, who were all born in England. They were all living in the Parramatta area. William died in 1888 in Dixon St. Parramatta and Elizabeth died in 1916 also in Parramatta. Anyone else doing research into this family would love to hear from you. Hi to the list, I wonder if anyone could help me locate a photo of the relevant part of Church Street, Parramatta where my maternal grandfather ran "The Green Coupon Store" c.1930? The family all lived on the premises while my mother & 3 siblings were growing up, and I have many stories passed down but unfortunately none of them includes a street number. Cheers....Yvonne (in a very sticky Melbourne)

Can someone help me here? Old family homes. I would love to know of any information on a house at 38 Roslyndale Ave., Woollahra. The house is called 'Roslyndale', built and lived in by my first family into Australia, William Lennon. The house is dated 1856, information gathered from the Australian Archives. William actually arrived about 1838 and died as a 'Gentleman. He was a stockbroker. Any information on this house or William Lennon would be gratefully received. TIA Lesley
I did a similar trip to Balmain Rozelle area of Sydney a few years ago. Most of the houses in Balmain and Rozelle are still as they were in the 50s and prior......................not the homes of my grandparents and gt grandmother. One was a cute little weatherboard semi and now it is a two story cement rendered modern home..............the other, well it had been bulldozed and there was a vacant block of land.......They must be one of the few homes that are not in their original state..........just my luck. Hello Louise, I remember doing the trip a few years back to my paternal grandparents home in Pendle Hill for the first time in forty years. It is still occupied by a family member so I was able to see the inside and it has not fared well. What a shock, I am sure it was not so small when I lived there for a few months at age 5. The old ice chest I remember is long gone, as is the coolgardie from the back porch, but the old "Metters" fuel stove is still there although sadly neglected, and the same huge elaborate old dresser is still taking up a whole wall in the extra large kitchen. The same old table stands in the middle of the kitchen where I remember all the kids (myself included) being stood up in a basin for the full suds bath - I still remember how embarrassed I used to be. The old dark wood four poster bed is gone along with the wonderful old eiderdown, and I'm sure the chamber pot is also missing from under it, although I didn't check. The cement rendered front verandah is still there, where all the old family photos were taken. Yes, It really is an emotional undertaking this family history isn't it? Yvonne (also an expatriate from Sydney living in Melbourne for the last forty years). -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Louise Reynolds I was unprepared for the waves of emotion and nostalgia. My old home looked like crap...it was never a good house, but my parents had it always painted, with well kept garden and a bit of pride about it. Very disappointing.
I would like to find out what happened to my third cousin, Laurel DAVIS, born in Auburn NSW in about 1918. She was the daughter of Vincent Kempton DAVIS and Rosa Gladys Langdon BLANDFORD. Vincent and Rosa, and their three sons, Vincent, Lester and Clifford (just 2) all drowned in a flash-flood at Stanwell Park in January 1933. They were camping near the creek when a severe storm caused the creek to break its banks and everyone was swept away as they tried to make their way to safety in the darkness. Three brave men saved Laurel, 15 at the time, and I would like to know what happened to her - was she looked after by other members of her family ? I found a possible marriage for her to Robert Charles Wall in 1938 and he died in 2004(Ryerson Index - I will have to go back to the library and look that up, now) but I have not found a death record for her in the NSW BDMs or Ryerson Index. She could still be alive somewhere and I would love to know Diane Cole -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hello all, A funny experience when I was in Sydney over the weekend. Firstly, I really, really envied the rain....we need it so much here in Melbourne. I had a hire car, and decided to drive out and look at the "old family homes"...ie. the house I grew up in to the age of 8 (when we moved to Melbourne), and my maternal and paternal grandparents' homes. It was a TERRIBLE morning on Monay for driving. I was on the M5 and it was bucketing.... However, finally got there. I was unprepared for the waves of emotion and nostalgia. My old home looked like crap...it was never a good house, but my parents had it always painted, with well kept garden and a bit of pride about it. Very disappointing. The biggest surprises were the homes of both maternal and paternal grandparents - they both looked great! Such a wash of emotion, as I remembered both homes and saw, in my memory, all of us playing and being there, and thought of my father as a small boy there (I know it is crazy but most of us genies must be a little emotional on that level). Strangely enough, whilst I was parked outside both houses (probably looking like I was casing the place), the residents walked out, totally unaware of me and going about their business. I was struck (not for the first time) by the layers of history every home holds. So strange to see "other people" living in what I consider family homes. Louise Melbourne
Hello to all, I had to unsubscribe for a little while> We had some line problems and I could not get my mail. My employer could pull it out of webmail, but was probably pretty surprised to see all my genealogy mail traffic. Apologies to anyone who posted replies to my thread about intercity trains etc. I appreciated every one of the reminisences. Louise Melbourne

Dear Patsy, While there are probably a couple of local newspapers in Marrickville, the main paper for Death Notices is the Sydney Morning Herald and the Dead Persons Society have indexed that paper from 1971 to present. Type in "The Ryerson Index" at your search engine. Hannanprint in Bourke Road ALEXANDRIA print one paper which I think is called the Inner West News. hi Listers If you were living in the Marrickville area what newspaper would be there please? Do they have a local paper at all does anyone know? I am searching for the family of Patrick and Mary KERR both living in Marrickville when they died they are buried in Rookwood RC cemetery. the family are Patrick marr Lola Greenfirld, Rita marr Frank Forde , Aubrey, Reginald marr Margaret Kane, Anthony marr Norma Leigh, Lawrence and Francis all born between 1923 and 1934 and marr in the 50's. I am hoping there is still family living in the area. many thanks Patsy
Hi Patsy, Marrickville is an old inner Sydney suburb. It is very Cosmopolitan now. If you go into Google and type local newspapers Marrickville it only comes up with 3. You might also go into Google and type Cumberland Newspapers and it might give you the areas that it covers. It has the monopoly on most of the areas. Sorry I can't be of more help. Go into White Pages NSW and find their name, address, phone no. email address etc. Hilda Cooper, Sydney. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patsy McMillan" <patsym@inet.net.nz> To: <aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 6:55 AM Subject: [ANS] newspaper/KERR family > hi Listers > > If you were living in the Marrickville area what newspaper would be > there please?
