    1. [ANS] Traffic reminders
    2. Joan
    3. HI all, Agreed - but some changes have occurred. Long, long ago before the road bridge across the Hawkesbury my parents used to pack us in the car with the camping gear and head off to Tuggerah for the Easter holidays. We left Eastwood before daylight and joined the queue of parked cars before too long, then edged our way towards the river by whatever number of cars got on the ferry, waited until it crossed and returned, then moved on another short distance etc etc etc. It is one of my childhood "nightmares". Obviously the return was no better! Joan

Your email reminded me of driving up from Sydney to the Central Coast to visit my parents c 1980 when the Sydney - Newcastle freeway was starting to be a glimmer in its mothers eye of actually being a road between these 2 points when they were blasting through sandstone to make the freeway up/ down Ourimbah Hill . You needed to take a packed lunch and a port a loo ! During Navy week in Oct 1986 there was a similar debacle . All roads near or leading to the Harbour were grid locked , including Eastern Valley Way , Willoughby , where I was Bye MargM Sydney List Admin

    3. Marg, That was brilliant. I have been in Sydney since 1951 and I can well equate to that information. In 1962 it took me 3½ hours to get from Epping Railway bridge to the Fire Station at Hornsby......normally a 20 minute ride. It was the October long weekend and we were going to visit my sister in Wyong. I was due at her house for dinner around 7.30pm and arrived at 10 minutes to midnight. It was like a line of glow worms all the way up the OLD Pacific Highway. I don't think things have changed that much. 3. After last Tuesdays ( 20 Feb) transport melt down with what seemed to be the whole population heading to the Harbour thought you maybe interested in a news report I stumbled on yesterday in the SMH of 1 Apr 1945 BIG CROWDS PACK NORTHERN TRAINS About 35,000 people packed trains from stations between Wyong & Hawkesbury River yesterday At Woy Woy Station trains were going straight thru towards Sydney Were some 2000 visitors from Sydney up on the Central Coast for a sailing championship Box carriages on some trains had between 14 - 20 extra people standing Motor traffic on the new Hawkesbury River Bridge was constant all day and heavier over night . The Peat Ferry handled heavier motor vehicles . Light traffic only being allowed to use the bridge , which will be officially opened on 5 May That has a similar ring to the closing of the Harbour tunnel Tuesday night ! Bye MargM Sydney List Admin

    3. Dear Rod, Do you want the Sydney CBD around 1900 or some specific part? Some maps are available from Picture Australia http://www.pictureaustralia.gov.au Put ........ map Sydney .......... in the search box Here is a summary from the City of Sydney archives: http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/history/sydneystreets/Minding_the_Streets/Fin ding_Your_Way/default.html or http://tinyurl.com/2ct3su Probably the most useful image is: "Map of the City of Sydney, 1920" This might help: http://www.sydneyarchives.info/ or http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/AboutSydney/HistoryAndArchives/Archives/ Historical Parish Maps: http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au/survey_mapping/parish_maps The various state libraries have microfilm copies of some old maps which you can photocopy. They are much cheaper than the Department of Lands maps. Hope this helps, Tony Moore (Castle Hill, NSW) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ On 18 Feb 2007 at 16:29, RODNEY MCDONALD wrote: From: "RODNEY MCDONALD" <rodofoz@iprimus.com.au> To: <aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com> Date sent: Sun, 18 Feb 2007 16:29:21 +1000 Subject: [ANS] 1900 map of sydney Send reply to: RODNEY MCDONALD <rodofoz@iprimus.com.au>, aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com > Hi list > Anyone able to help me with a map of Sydney in about 1900 > > Many thanks > Rod
