    3. I have a burial in 1857 and 2 marriages, 1 underage but with mother's consent. The family was Presbyterian from Armagh. There is a more balanced & complete story of James Fullerton on Australian Dictionary of Biography Online: http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A040249b.htm Sal

    3. Thanks to all who offered information on James Fullerton and his marriage practices. As mentione dby others, the certificate contained little information about the couple, but I have been lucky enough to gather it from other sources. These two at least were both over 21 and the birth of their first child was a respectable time afterwards so I don't think it was a quicky wedding. The groom's family were however confirmed Presbyterians so it may have simply been a genuine case. Still on the subject of the Rev James, does anyone know if he performed burials? I have been unable to find a registration for the groom's father and wonder if the Rev's bad bookkeeping might be the cause? Thanks again for everyone's input. 1. [ANS] Looking for Diane Armstrong
    2. Lyn Mealey
    3. In 2000 Diane Armstrong posted a query on a Rootsweb Mailing List. I only found it in 2006 -could not contact her as email address no longer current. I would like to contact her as we have ancestors in common. Henry Arthur Baxter married Madeline Scard in Sydney 3.3.1876. They had 5 children - Henry Arthur, Ada Madeline, Edith May, Thomas J, William Henry. Henry Arthur Baxter married Ethel Rose Tatham 13.3.1901. Their children were Edith May (1901), Arthur TR born Balmain North, Gordon N, Henry A born Balmain South and Alfred C and Ethel M(1910) born Burwood. Edith May Baxter married Henry Young 16.3.1904. Their children were Henry James, Alexander Robert, Albert Arthur, Beryl May, Irene G and Gordon Frank. Diane Armstrong probably descended from Henry Arthur Baxter and Ethel Rose Tatham. I'm descended from Edith May Baxter and Henry Young. Perhaps someone out there knows Diane Armstrong or perhaps is descended from someone above. Regards Lyn Sydney

    3. Hi Listers, I too have ,2, ancestors married by this gentleman. In 1858 and in 1881. There are few details on either certificate and so I contacted the Presbyterian and the Uniting Church Archives. I found that they operate together and that the Rev Fullerton was known to run a marriage shop with little regard to age or any other nicety. The reponse told me that perhaps the names and maybe the date were correct. Fullerton was apparently more than once in trouble for marrying under age girls. He said it sounded more like Open than Exclusive. 3. Hello Bill, In reply to your question re Family Tree Maker, I purchased the 2006 version from SAG so perhaps they may be able to help you. Family Tree Maker is an American programme and does not help with Australian messages for me but it is a very clear and helpful programme for recording research. I am unable to get out now to do any research as I have a bad knee and have booked to have a replacement. I have lots of records on my dad's family but although my grandparents were Irish and married after migrating to Aust. These were my mother's parents but I knew they settled in The Glebe area and died in the same place. You kindly sent me a record on my grandfather being a Cab Prop in Sydney in the 1800's. Unfortunately, I cannot find further information in Ireland although I have both sets of parents from a Marriage Cert. of both John Shannon married Catherine Keogh. He came from Cavan County and Catherine from County Wicklow. -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-sydney-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bill Shute Sent: Friday, 11 May 2007 8:01 AM To: aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com Subject: [ANS] Family Tree Maker on www Good Morning List, Last night I had a call about Family Tree Maker on the net. 3. Hi Jean, I can only speak here about Exclusive Bretheren. My partner is ex-Exclusive Bretheren, and will no doubt know something about this. He is in bed with a bad cold and I will ask him when he is suffiently awake. However, if it is Exclusive Bretheren, there is no one to contact. There is no church as such, just meeting houses, nor are there ministers in the Bretheren. You will find it quite hard to get any information except from people who have left. Having said that, because they mix only with themselves everyone knows everyone else and they travel extensively to other meetings all over the place. So the people who have left knew a wide variety of Bretheren. I will get back to you later this morning once he's up and about. 3. Hi Jenny You're lucky that you were able to find the marriage certificate. I had no such luck - according to my grandmother's birth certificate (and her siblings also) her parents were married 3.3.1876 in Elizabeth St by Rev Dr James Fullerton - when I rang Prebyterian archives about this and mentioned James Fullerton, there was some hilarity from the gentleman I spoke to - he mentioned James Fullerton's notoriety - apparently did hundreds of marriages a year - asked few questions and was a bit "sloppy with the paper work" - the man I spoke to was not terribly surprised that I couldn't find a certificate! Googling him makes for interesting reading. 3. In Isadore Brodsky's "The Streets of Sydney" there is a chapter on Elizabeth Street - On the Sporting Side. Elizabeth Street can spring one of its greatest surprises midway between Bathurst and Liverpool Streets. In hotel premises that existed there before the Obelisk (Cleopatra's Needle) was built, a Gretna Green tradition formerly grew. During the residency of the Rev.Dr Fullerton in these premises, the building became "a favourite place for those who wanted to be married on the shortest notice." Regards ........Rusheen. 3. Hi Jenny I am sure you will receive plenty of replies to your query. Dr James Fullerton operated a rather dodgy type of marriage centre at this church in Elizabeth Street. I also have a couple who were married by him. If you Google his name (search Australia) you will find entries for him which should answer your question. Also by searching Google Images with the same name you will find an image of this church. Good luck.
