Dear Peter, Did you check the same paper, or that of a day or two before for a Death Notice, and Funeral Notice? Death and Funeral Notices in those times were fairly brief, often only a Funeral Notice to save on costs. At State Records, Kingswood there are Inquest files (if they "survived"). One of those will give you all statements from all witnesses, reports of Post Mortem, and any other reports. Finally the finding of the Coroner. Have a look at www.records.nsw.gov.au and look for Archives in Brief No. 4 which deals with Inquests. There are a couple of agents who will look for this file for you for what is said to be a reasonable fee. Hello Listers, Thank you to all those who have answered my previous queries. I have an Edward Stenson Vernon MOWBRAY in my tree. To my knowledge he was born in Wiaopa New Zealand and died in Sydney Australia in 1909. I have found this record of a death which I believe to be his in the NSW database. The information matches what I have. 4191/1909 MOWBRAY EDWARD S V EDWARD S SYDNEY I have searched the newspapers nla gov au database and have come across this notice. >From the Sydney Morning Herald dated 18 May 1909 Woollahra Residents Death. Edward Mowbray, Lately living a Edgecliff Rd Woolahra, Died at Sydney Hospital last night under circumstances which deemed advisable to report to the Coroner. Deceased usually enjoyed good health, but on Sunday complained to his wife of a headache. After having tea the same night he went towards the kitchen, but fell and struck his head on the floor. Severe pains in the head followed and a doctor was called in, who ordered his removal to the hospital, where he died last evening. A certificate as to cause of death has not been given and the police will report the matter to the coroner. Where can I go to find out more about this matter and maybe confirm it is my Edward MOWBRAY? There seems to have been at least one other Edward MOWBRAY around Sydney at the same time. I have tried the Coroners database on Ancestry but it doesn't have any Edward MOWBRAY. Can anyone suggest where I might be able to get a coroners report or maybe the police report. I have found this record of a marriage which matches my records. As his first wife Eliza Ann WADHAM died in 1900 in Auckland New Zealand. 9263/1903 MOWBRAY EDWARD SV HARKNESS GERTRUDE REDFERN Is anyone else researching these lines? I have checked Google maps and yes - it also explains another photo/postcard in Nana's album. There is a view across parkland and the harbour with one naval ship in the foreground to the right, another in the background to the left. Woolcott St crosses Bay Road to parkland and the harbour just next to HMAS Waterhen (wouldn't have been 'Waterhen' then but bet was naval land). I'd say 'Navatu' was very close to Bay Road and the harbour. I was always under the impression that both Nana's parents lived in the terrace house at Milsons Point until their deaths in the early 1930s - I will have to revisit the library and the Post Office Directories :) Leith On Wed, Nov 3, 2010 at 5:03 PM, Leith Davis <[email protected]> wrote: > wow Diane, that must be the same house - I thought it would be such a > needle in a haystack, it seems nothing short of miraculous that someone else > has come across it > > thank you > Leith > > > On Wed, Nov 3, 2010 at 3:34 PM, Diane <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Hi Leith, >> >> For what it is worth ... Hi Leith, For what it is worth ... I came across an obscure reference to a street address (c.1915) given as - Navatu, Wollcott Street, off Bay Road, North Sydney, New South Wales. My grandmother's Kilpatrick family lived in Milsons Point in an end terrace house. I have recently been lent a couple of my grandmother's photo albums, and there are photos of her mother, Louisa nee Rodero, 'at "Navatu" '. Under one of these photos my grandmother has written 'my Mother at Bay Road'. It was a substantial Federation bungalow by the looks of it, with an ornately carved wooden front gate, in that style. The photos would have been taken in the mid 1920s. I'm intrigued because I lived in Bay Road for a time, and have friends living there now. Just wondering if anyone has stumbled across, or has any clues on investigating further? Here I am again. Does anyone have a current email address for Noel Mann, family historian? I used to correspond with him back in the 1980's! I would be grateful for any assistance. Thanks also to Marg M for the comprehensive reply re my trip, shipping and the Osborn family. There is so much to plan for and time seems to be flying. Cathy

Hi Robert: Hi: I have some credits left at: http://www.findmypast.co.uk/welcome.jsp First, I found the name of a random passenger on that ship thru Ancestry, then I looked her up at findmypast: Name: Mrs Elizabeth ADAMS Date of departure: 16 September 1914 Port of departure: London Passenger destination port: Sydney, Australia Passenger destination: Sydney, Australia Date of Birth: 1891 (calculated from age) Age: 23 Marital status: Sex: Female Occupation: Married Passenger recorded on: Page 17 of 29 Ship: Borda Official Number:135340 Master's name: G A Millington Steamship Line: P & O Branch Service Where bound: Australia Square feet: 21510 Registered tonnage: 7036 Passengers on voyage: 974 Then I looked at the ship's manifest on Ancestry. The heading on the top of the passenger manifest says: "A List of Crew and Passengers arrived in the Ship Borda, Registered at Greenock, G. A. Millington?, Master, Rurthen?, Gross 11136, Nett 7036 Tons, from the Port of London & Melbourne to Sydney, New South Wales, 9th November, 1914." This is the only ship that you requested that I could find. Hi Beryl, The Family History Society Library is in Lambton. You could try the Executive Inn at New Lambton ($155) or The Tudor Inn and Boulevarde on Beaumont which are both in Hamilton (half way between the two). Wotif and Lastminute are both helpful sites.
