I have been trying to find the details of a inquest from 17 April 1824 Sydney for a still born female child; parents I believe were Sarah and Edward Hutton with witnesses Mary Bevett and Esther Dalton. I have just read that ancestry has added inquest records 1796-1942 for NSW; just wondering if the above inquested is listed please in the index? Karen

Hello All, A great way to "test" is to go to the Archives of the group that you have joined and to check there if messages are coming through to the group. www.rootsweb.com find the group your after and check the archives: you can search or browse the archives and you will see if posts have been made and if you are receiving them. I use these tools quite often checking on older posts as you do at times find links to your families that you have picked up recently. At a recent meeting at St. Peters Anglican Church Cooks River, great interest was shown in the history of brickmaking in the St. Peters area of Sydney. Conscious that many more may be unaware that their ancestors were employed in this area, the St. Peters Cooks River History Group have published on their web site a listing of all brickmaking families who have had a child baptised at St. Peters Church Cooks River during the period 1838-1899. This alphabetical listing gives: the date of birth of the family's first child baptised at St. Peters(not to be confused with the first born): the child's name and that of its parents: the surname: father's occupation and an abbreviated address. The listing and a report on the meeting are on the St. Peters Cooks River History web site, which is, www.stpeterscooksriverhistory.wordpress.com Bob and Laurel Horton, St. Peters Cooks River History Group.

Dear Margaret, There are no Edward RILEY entries in the NSW Probate Index with a 1928 Death Date. Sincerely, Bill > I seem at a brick wall, and am rather reluctant to purchase certificates > at > this stage as this is not my own personal family. > So thought someone may be able to help via early Electoral look ups etc. > please. > I am trying to track the birth of a EDWARD RILEY. > He married in 1893 at Grafton to an Elizabeth Jane White (usually known as > Jane) and he died 1928 at Casino and the BMD indexes say his parents were > a
Hi Listers I seem at a brick wall, and am rather reluctant to purchase certificates at this stage as this is not my own personal family. So thought someone may be able to help via early Electoral look ups etc. please. I am trying to track the birth of a EDWARD RILEY. He married in 1893 at Grafton to an Elizabeth Jane White (usually known as Jane) and he died 1928 at Casino and the BMD indexes say his parents were a John and Ellen Riley. Jane survived him for many years and she died in 1969 and was buried with him at Casino. This Edward's parents John and Ellen Riley also seem rather elusive to say the least and so my thoughts are that they might be overseas and this Edward has emigrated from somewhere, but so far I can find nothing to prove my thoughts. Does this sound familiar to anyone's research out there? If so I would love to hear from you. Dear Sylvia, The Ryerson Index is a combined alphabetical index of all the papers indexed. There are of course hundreds of newspapers that are not being indexed, and of those being currently indexed, not all have back indexing taking place. Simply a matter of not enough volunteers. When the Ryerson Index was started about 15 years ago it was thought that the gap between official records, and current newspapers would be filled, and that is the case for the Sydney area, where both major newspapers are indexed, and back indexing is taking place of them. It does not necessarily apply though to country papers, or even suburban newspapers. By using the "Newspaper Coverage" icon on the main page, and clicking on the paper of interest, then clicking on the "dates indexed" a page will come up to tell you exactly what papers have in fact been indexed. The Ryerson Index is usually updated each second weekend, so frequent checking may be needed. Should you find an entry that fits, on the main page there is a Requesting a Lookup icon, and for many papers there are volunteers to provide you with the notice wording. Our country being much larger in size than England it is proving difficult to cover it all. Electoral Rolls are not searchable on line. The current roll is maintained electronically, however it needs a personal to an Electoral Office to check it, for privacy reasons. When responding please remove past messages except a little so that the thread can be followed to save on archiving space, and downloads that are not necessary, particularly considering listers on dial up. Sincerely, Bill > Dear Bill Thank you very much for taking the trouble to reply. Thanks > for the advice, I will put a follow up into the messages explaining that I > am searching from the UK. Can make quite a difference with any reply. Alot of water goes under a bridge in 63 yrs. Appears to be only 1 x Noel PICKERING in the late 1940s in the records with no other middle names This Noel P married a Martha Hilda HOWES 1949 / 13587, Inverell. Thats a fair way NW from Sydney in the New England district of NSW. Seems to be only one Martha Hilda HOWES who fits . She was b 1911 so was 38 yrs old in 1949. Neither died in NSW to 1979 To further my guess work , Martha H had an older sister Jessie, who married an Archie YOUMAN in Armidale 1927 . Are more accessible records for these 2 as deaths of both are in http://www.ryersonindex.org/. Suggest you ask for look upsof both death notices and fingers crossed these will have name of any children bye MargM Sydney List Admin

Dear Sharon, As a kid growing up I lived not far from there, and my memory of it is that the street was pretty much first class real estate. It is long enough for old staff records to be available, so State Records, Kingswood would probably be the storage place. www.records.nsw.gov.au using gaol staff, prison staff or similar as keywords might turn up an archives in brief (help sheet) to help you. Dear Sharon, What time frame? I would check Prison Department staff records. He was probably a warder at Long Bay Gaol. That way he is on the right side of the fence, which may disappoint.
