    3. The 'Camden' suburb of Elderslie is named after the property Ellerslie (or Elderslie) which was a land grant to surveyor John Oxley about 1816 (see http://www.macarthur.gdayneighbour.com.au/CamdenSuburbHistories.htm) just across the Nepean from Camden. 1. [ANS] Manly Grammar & Far West

    3. Thanks to all who have replied to me on and off list. Manly Grammar was a private girls' school run by Principal Miss Strachan. She was seeking accommodation away from the coast late 1941- early 42 as did SCEGGS Darlinghurst, Shore, Cranbrook, St Vincent's etc in the Blue Mountains. The school was operational in Manly in 1941. >> My husband was in its first enrolment of pupils when it opened c 1951 >> I have a copy of I thinks it a 50 year aniversary booklet >> .......somewhere I am not confused with that school - my husband taught there in 1953 > if its premises were requisitoned as the Far West Children' s >> facility was > > Never heard of that happening.................. That is still in Manly The Drummond Far West home was requisitioned for use by the Women's Army. In return the army requisitioned a large property, Rothesay, in Springwood. It was some distance from the station and difficult to get children to the station to travel for Sydney for specialist appointments etc. Far West then bought a property near the station and occupied in until Feb. 1944 when Drummond Home was handed back. 3. Dear Karl, Phillipa and Sue, We have to remember that there were a lot of smaller schools in days gone by, due to the lack of transport. No "Mum's Taxis" then. The school file will tell where it is because it may well have a plan, a contract to build, and even if that is not there, reports to the Inspector at ........... will give a clue as to the district. Mention has been made of Randwick, part of the Eastern Suburbs, and with the more affluent population, there were smaller somewhat private type schools too. Sincerely, Bill > >>An online search of NSW State Records lists a pre-1939 school called > >>Elderslie. ... 3. Dear Max, Possibly the address was originally handwritten is 69 Yerrick Rd, Lakemba which still exists. Yerrick runs between Punchbowl Rd & Yangoora Rd, just outside the factory area. On the Google street view, the house looks to be early 20th century so could be the original. 3. Hi Listers I have a RICHARD POMEROY born 1846 in Cork, Ireland, and died 1925 at Granville in Sydney (so the BMDs tell me). He and his wife Eva Edith Pocock divorced in 1911, and the reason for this query is if someone who has access to one of those early postal directories pre 1925 just might be able to give me an idea where he was residing precisely and more importantly (and if listed) what his occupation was. I have the rest of his siblings and their lives but this Richard is proving the more elusive one to round off his bits and pieces. It is beginning to look like he was the black sheep of the family or just had a wandering urge making it awfully hard to nail his life story. I know it is a long shot but just thought I would drop it on the group incase I have missed something. Montague Flats, The Breakers and Elouera were listed separately. In 1932, Manly Girls´ Grammar School was listed at no 44, the former Montague Flats or Montagu House. After one or more moves in Ashburner Street, the school had settled for the following decade. In 1932, Ashburner Street appeared as an almost unbroken line of boarding houses and residential flat buildings, with the exception of Manly Girls´ Grammar. The school´s tennis court and terraced gardens provided a defining character to the northern end of Ashburner Street until the school closed in circa 1941. 3. Hi Philippa An online search of NSW State Records lists a pre-1939 school called Elderslie. It shows that they have 2 bundles of administrative files with Item No. 5/15797.2. This would not be any school in the Camden suburb of the the same name as that suburb dates from the early 1990s though palnning would date back wel before that. Another avenue to search would be Post Office and Trade Directories of that period. They usually list schools. Are you sure the school was in Randwick?
