Would SKS be good enough to please look up birth of Benjamin Esgate in the period 1909- 1919. Possibly in Katoomba area, but don't know parents. Regards Lyn

Mark I am pretty sure there is a Goodsell Street in either Balmain or Rozelle, where I grew up. Perhaps a connection to him. There is a Family History Library at Balmain, which covers the history of Rozelle, Leichhardt, Balmain, Annandale, Lilyfield, etc,.... perhaps they could help more. Hi Laraine, Whilst cheap, I was very disappointed with GenesReunited. You can't just view everyone's tree and have to send an email to make initial contact. Then, if they see fit, they decide if they will let you see their tree or not. In my experience, most of the people I contacted, did not reply. I assume this is because a) their subscription had expired or b) they don't visit the site very often. FindmyPast is a good resource. I usually just 'pay as I go', as I didn't feel I'd get my money's worth out of a subscription. Though you can waste a lot of money, looking at Parish records, as the search results don't provide the child's parent's names. So it's not until you pay, that you will see the parent's names and find out it's not the child you want. :p So then it might be better to have a Subscription, if you intend to look at a lot of BDM's. It is a good site to tie up loose ends, for shipping or that obscure BDM that you can't find. :) If I were going to take out a subscription, I would only take out the 6 mths sub, as you should be able to cover a lot of ground in 6mths. The 88.95 pounds works out to approx. $142.60. Hi Laraine, I have been a financial member of genesreunited for about four years. It keeps my grey matter active all year which helps keep alsheimers at bay. The members there are a happy lot and are always willing to pitch in and help break down brick walls. I sometimes find members are aware of one of my ancestors who is not on their direct line so they have not got them on their tree. Often they have information about them though, that they are willing to share. At about $20.00 AUD I recommend it as the most cost effective method of doing genealogy and it is a very cheap Christmas or birthday present. Dear Listers, I am hoping that someone can help me make contact with my cousins, or their descendants. Previous posts in this regard were sent to the NSW and SYDNEY Lists in Nov. 2007 and Jan. 2008, and were met with some success. My aunt; Patricia GOODSELL was born 20th March 1915 in Bombala NSW. She married John WILSON (born Gippsland Vic. 1891) on 29th January 1934, at Annandale in Sydney. At the time, they were residing at 263 Balmain Road, Lilyfield. Four children were born of the marriage, three of whom survived to adulthood. Eunice Sylvia (1934), Patricia Dawn (known as Dawn) (1935), Brian Henry (died in infancy 1937) and Bruce ? (1938). Eunice wed James Alfred WARBURTON in 1950 at Balmain and they had three children; Lynette C. (1952), Judith A. (1953) and James F. WARBURTON (1956). Eunice died 14th May 1966 at 13 Undola Rd. Helensburg after self-ingesting arsenic while in a disturbed state of mind ( Coroner's findings). Following Eunice's death, it appears that James Alfred WARBURTON and the three children returned to the home of his mother (Phyllis) at 147 Evans St. Rozelle, as this is where he died on 15th October 1971 aged 38 years. At this stage the youngest of the three WARBURTON children (James F.) would have been about 15 or 16 years of age, and not that much older when his grandmother Phyllis died 27th Dec. 1974. I have been unable to find James F. WARBURTON on the Electoral Roll nor is he listed in the Ryerson Index so have been unable to make contact via this avenue. Presumably his sisters; Lynette and Judith would have married however their details are not as yet available on the BDM website. Is there an Index of Marriages advertised in newspapers similar to the Ryerson Index of death notices in newspapers that is available? Dawn WILSON married Richard Pearce NORTHEY in 1957 and I have been able to contact him and confirm that they were later divorced. Once again an Index of Marriages post 1959 would be of significant use. I have no information on Bruce ? WILSON other than a rough idea of his age from my aunts death certificate, not even his second christian name. Richard NORTHEY told me that he was in the army, but I have been unable to confirm that on the National Archives website. Thanks in advance, Mark GOODSELL
Hi fellow listers, Should I ask Santa for a subscription to Genes Reunited or Find my past. Perhaps there might be something even better. The 1911 census is an attraction. He gave me a subscription to Ancestry last year and this has been very helpful. Thanks in anticipation. Laraine
Dear Margaret, The Divorce file at State Records has an Affidavit in it that the last Eva Edith POMEROY heard of her husband was in 1903 at COONABARRABRAN where he was working on farms. They married at MOREE. Her Affidavit indicates that she did not know any of his family, and it appeared that as far as she knew he had no family in Australia. Her Affidavit for Divorce says that after payment of her debts she was not "worth Twenty Five Pounds" and I suspect that may have been the amount of assets that determined how much one paid for process of Divorce. I also saw an Affidavit where a Sheriff went to a hotel in the Newcastle area to try to serve papers on him, however he had left the hotel and could not be located before boarding a train. Regards, Bill > Hi Listers > I have a RICHARD POMEROY born 1846 in Cork, Ireland, and died 1925 at > Granville in Sydney (so the BMDs tell me). > He and his wife Eva Edith Pocock divorced in 1911, and the reason for this > query is if someone who has access to one of those early postal > directories > pre 1925 just might be able to give me an idea where he was residing > precisely and more importantly (and if listed) what his occupation was.
Hi Lorette From your information it looks as if Elderslie was a minor school whose building - and possibly some pupils were absorbed by PLC Croydon - my grandmother had moved by 1895 to Brighton College Randwick where her family lived. You've been a great help in sorting out the schools! Philippa >maybe the Wilson"s ran a small school from their home, people did >in those days taking maybe four or five pupils. or even less >then again did the Service family live in this area at the time.
Bill This isn't relevant to my current inquiry but the link you'e\ve given will be a great help with some other family members I am researching - I did not know you could access that information - it sounds excellent Philippa >If the girls were teachers in the Public School System, or even trained in >that system there will be a record of their service on the Teachers Rolls at >State Records KINGSWOOD. >There is an Archives in Brief on the subject of Teachers on >www.records.nsw.gov.au and I have found that the record contains their >personal details, date of birth, date of start and pay, where they were >appointed and transfers, each giving the pay rate and grade. >Details of marriage and death if they died while still in the service. >Sincerely, Bill
Hi Lorette just got your email below - and I think you have solved the Ederslie problem. The mention of Croydon jogged my memory and I remembered my mother saying that the school her mother went to became PLC Croydon - so the Croydon reference makes sense. Thank you VERY much. Helps to cheer me up after the loss of my entire eudora in out boxes this morning. At least Rootsweb is archived! Dear Phillipa, If the girls were teachers in the Public School System, or even trained in that system there will be a record of their service on the Teachers Rolls at State Records KINGSWOOD. There is an Archives in Brief on the subject of Teachers on www.records.nsw.gov.au and I have found that the record contains their personal details, date of birth, date of start and pay, where they were appointed and transfers, each giving the pay rate and grade. Details of marriage and death if they died while still in the service. Sincerely, Bill > > I will send you an attachment of the newpaper article > > the other school "Elderslie" is a problem can not find in randwick area > > did find 1904 a Mrs Annie Hawdon Wilson "Elderslie" Young St Croydon her > two daughters ( ellie and Gwendolene were teachers) only trouble is, > this is outside the area that you are looking in,. Hi Phillipa When you mentioned PLC Croydon I looked up a book that I have on the school "The Golden Hope" author John McFarlane In 1889 " Shubra Hall " Croydon owned by Hordern was aquired new buildings were added and the College was officially opened in 1891 under the heading of teachers 1890 Miss Ella Wilson Dancing only listed for that year no listing of the name Service from 1888 to 1891 maybe the Wilson"s ran a small school from their home, people did in those days taking maybe four or five pupils. or even less then again did the Service family live in this area at the time.
