Hi again Anton With the great help from Jenny W looks like this puzzle has been solved............... Thomas REYNOLDS came here as a soldier, in 1854 with the 12th Regiment of Foot, East Suffolk . I suspect he resigned c mid 1860's as this regiment was eventually sent to India. Both daughters births found in the GRO Regimental births in Findmypast . Incidentally via a thorough search on the NSW births indexes there is birth of an Ann REYNOLDS to Thomas & Ann 1858, Paddington and a 1863 birth of an unnamed chid to Thomas & Ann, Paddington. Paddington is an eastern Sydney suburb and the location of Victorian Army Barracks In the 1871 UK census Thomas REYNOLDS was an inn keeper of the Grand Junction Hotel, Nantwich, Cheshire with wife Ann, b Ireland and Jane ( aka Sarah Jane) ,8, b Australia Hopefully the UK Archives will have more info on this bloke. As to dried fruit being send to rels in England from here mid 1900's that could be a family myth :-) Bye MargM Sydney List Admin
Many thanks to all who helped especially Jenny W who unravelled everything so neatly. Great work and great list Anton > > > > >
Dear Jan, While it may not help you to know why, when and how the other family went to Western Australia, Arthur INMAN (as recorded) on the NSW Probate Index died on 2 Feb 1960, then of DELEGATE, and left an estate No. 517286 in Series 4. Papers for this would be at State Records, Kingswood. If you can't get there yourself there are a couple of agents who will view, copy and send for a fee. (contact me off list) The only other INMAN that year was Margaret of LEICHHARDT who died 10 Aug 1960. Probate 5151763, series 4. Sincerely, Bill > Ada Mary was a daughter of Arthur Inman (1859-1940) and his wife Lydia > (nee > Grimshaw) (1861-1948). Ada Mary was a daughter of Arthur Inman (1859-1940) and his wife Lydia (nee Grimshaw) (1861-1948). She and John were married in Sydney. John's background is that he was born in NZ, returned to the UK with his parents (his father Henry Rochester Breckels was b Essex 1863, and his mother Sarah Clemett was b 1864 Kaikoura, NZ) John had signed up to the Royal Navy in England on 14 Apr 1903, and sailed to Sydney aboard 'Prometheus' in 1907 where he apparently jumped ship. Two children were born to John and Ada, these children were registered in the Inman name: Arthur Clemett Inman in 1916, and Irene Kathleen Inman in 1921. In 1930 John and Ada (and I presume the children) where John is listed as a Farmer, but they are both listed under the name Inman. In 1936 They are in Griffith, still in the name of Inman, at Farm 1201 - John is a Labourer. In 1943 they are still in Griffith, still in the name of Inman - he is a Farm Manager at Farm 2345. In 1949 and 1953 they are in Gunnedah, at Hartfell Station, still Inman - he is Farm Manager. Then I don't know. Ada died in 1974, and John in 1975 and they are both buried in Katanning Cemetery in Western Australia - still under the name Inman. I would like to find anything about his desertion, but have tried nla with no success, and I'd like to know why they went to WA. Their daiughter Irene married Alfred Godfrey - she died in 1977 and is also in Katanning Cemetery, I assume under the name Godfrey. The son Arthur Clemett Inman died in Sydney in 1960. He had been married to a Jean Begg. Any ideas, advice, information very gratefully accepted Regards Jan Pottsville NSW
Further to my suggestion that the girls father may have been a soldier I looked up the Regimental Birth Index and found the following: Mary A REYNOLD, Sydney 1858 12th regiment vol 954 page 53 Sarah J REYNOLDS Sydney 1863 12th Regiment vol 954 page 81 It looks like these are your births which were registered with the Regiment but not in baptism or civil records at the time. There is a record of a Thomas Reynolds serving in the 12th Regiment in Australia but so far I haven't identified him in the Chelsea Pensioner records. He MAY have changed regiments and there are quite a lot of Thomas Reynolds to search through. I'll let you know if I find anything further. Jenny W [who has a soldier ancestor]
> As these girls returned to uk as young teenagers it leads > me to assume > either father died or remarried...will try to check other > states for > information. Just a thought, but have you considered that the family may have returned to the Uk as well and their father may have been a publican IN the UK? For example, if their father was in the army and posted to Australia the girls may have been born here and then returned to UK when the regiment was sent home. Once there father was pensioned off he got work as a publican in the UK. Or, perhaps their father came out during the gold rush, the girls were born here and then the family returned home after a few years. I have branch of a family who did just that and coincidentally were publicans too. The youngest sister stayed and married. Older sister, husband and children all returned home. It's just a thought but it is always worth thinking outside the square. Jennny

Hi All Thanks for the speedy replies. The info born Sydney came from one census return in UK but foreign births not always accurate rest of census years just show as Australia which is as per enumerator's instructions. Unfourtunately more knowledge of living rellies sending dried fruit after WW2 is just a childhood memory of the gifts...there are no surviving letters or details of any family in australia. This quest started as a family rumour of an australian connection nothing more....i managed to trace the connection via a UK marriage certificate. I have also checked incoming passengers to UK and neither girls show up though Mary Ann REYNOLDS turns up in 1871 UK census as a "relative" aged 13 and both Mary Ann REYNOLDS and her sister Sarah J turn up in 1881 uk census in service then both get married and stay in UK. I have tried tracing the "relative" with whom Mary Ann was with in 1871 and have ascertained that the HOH wife's maiden name was REYNOLDS so could have been Thomas's sister but cannot find them together in a census as children in 1841. As these girls returned to uk as young teenagers it leads me to assume either father died or remarried...will try to check other states for information. thanks to all again who replied. regards Anton On 19/12/2010 22:52, Marg M wrote: > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Anton McLoughlin"<[email protected]> > To: "sydney"<[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, December 19, 2010 11:29 PM > Subject: [ANS] REYNOLDS Mary Ann 1858 and REYNOLDS Sarah J 1863 > > > Hi Anton > >> I am new to this list and am hoping someone can give me more information >> the two girls names above born in Sydney. >> All i know is that their father was Thomas REYNOLDS > I cant find any evidence here for that or an Sarah Jane , dau of a Thomas? > Certainly not in NSW birth records > or in Ancestrys general AUS births indexes > > and according to >> Mary Ann's marriage cert(married to Edwin HARDING in UK in 1895 he was >> alive and was a publican. > > Can find no Thomas REYNOLDS connected to the hotel trade here in the 1903 / > 1910 electoral rolls > > >> Also I know that there were descendants of REYNOLDS still in Australia >> at the end of WW2 as they sent fruit to the HARDING family in the UK. > Need more info to pin this down ?? > > Mary Ann is in the 1901 census b Australia aged 37, so b c1863 but cant find > her in the 1911 or > in Ancestrys UK incoming passenger indexes ??? > > > Bye > > MargM > Sydney List Admin > > > > Please remember to snip most of the earlier message before you post any > reply...... Dear Anton, Using the data supplied and the CD version of the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages I have been unable to come up with either of those births. If you go to the NSW BDM website you can view these yourself. When considering if you should purchase certificates, remember we have transcription agents in NSW who are cheaper, and often quicker than buying from the Registry. I use www.transcriptions.com.au and find them very reliable. Should they have been born in another state, they will be registered in that state, not on NSW records. An area would be helpful and that might be able to be obtained from the Publicans License. Sincerely, Bill > Hello Listers > I am new to this list and am hoping someone can give me more information > the two girls names above born in Sydney. > All i know is that their father was Thomas REYNOLDS and according to > Mary Ann's marriage cert(married to Edwin HARDING in UK in 1895 he was > alive and was a publican. > Also I know that there were descendants of REYNOLDS still in Australia > at the end of WW2 as they sent fruit to the HARDING family in the UK.
Hello Listers I am new to this list and am hoping someone can give me more information the two girls names above born in Sydney. All i know is that their father was Thomas REYNOLDS and according to Mary Ann's marriage cert(married to Edwin HARDING in UK in 1895 he was alive and was a publican. Also I know that there were descendants of REYNOLDS still in Australia at the end of WW2 as they sent fruit to the HARDING family in the UK. regards Anton

Lyn, In addition to the entry in Blue Mountains Pioneer Register pre 1920, Ben is featured in a book by Jim Smith called The Last of the Cox's River Men - Ben Esgate published in 2006. Jim's book are limited editions and would be sold out, but as it has an ISBN copies would be in the National Library, Canberra as well as the State/Mitchell in Sydney if you can't find one anywhere else. Ben played a significant role in the V.D.C. in the upper Blue Mountains in WW2. Hello Lyn There is an entry for Benjamin Charles Esgate in the Blue Mountains Pioneer Register Pre 1920. Apparently there are three children all living. I will put you in touch with the contributor, off list. Thank you Rex, Sherrie and Jenny for your kindness. I thought perhaps these were Benjamin's parents, so thank you for confirming that for me. He married my mother's first cousin Lillian Barker in Katoomba in 1936. He died in 2003 aged 89, but no mention is made of any family. I'd like to find whether there were any children and what happened to Lillian - can't find her in NSW BDM or Ryerson, but perhaps they divorced and she remarried. Ben Esgate seems to have for many years been a bushman in the Cox's River area as there are some newspaper reports of rescues of people lost in the Blue Mountains in the 1950's mentioning Ben as a bushmen assisting the police. Thanks again for your help Regards Lyn
