Greetings Linda The Balmain Tancreds were certainly Catholic. I have twenty of them buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery I will keep looking for Mary's place of burial, I havent been able to find her at Rookwood, so it's not impossible she died in Parramatta and was buried in Balmain Edwin Punch is a bit more of a bit more of a puzzle, I can find no birth for either Edwin or Edmund, but there is a birth in 1869 for Ernest M Punch, with the right parents names, so here is my theory. Edwin/Edmund.Ernest's father, John Greenway Punch was a master mariner and presumably at sea for long periods and E Punch was born whilst he was at sea and the birth was not registered but following his death, probably in 1869, someone (his uncle??) registered the birth and arranged the funeral For my purposes I will assume he was buried in Devonshire St. I do appreciate your help with this and appreciate your interest all the best Patrick Callaghan PS I hope to pass 900 proven burials into the Balmain Catholic cemetery in 2011 and will probably publish my work towards the end of the year ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ross" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2011 8:28 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Edwin Punch aged 2 & Mary Tancred aged 48 both died1868seeking place of burial > Hi Patrick > Mary TANCRED ; I have the St John's, Mays Hill and All Saints books and > she > is not in those. Hi Patrick Mary TANCRED ; I have the St John's, Mays Hill and All Saints books and she is not in those. A friend of mine is a Tancred decendant and I am pretty sure they were catholics and I do not have the St Patricks book which is the catholic one. I couldn't find her in the Devonshire St book Edwin PUNCH ; I have found a mention in the Devonshire St book of a Edmund PUNCH aged 3 years. Its in the licenses to bury and butts section. License date is 18/6/1869 the applicant is his uncle William HINCHEY of Hyde Park hotel, Bathurst St. This could well be Edwin. Keep up the good work. Thanks Mary I also subscribe to Flying Solo and I will have a look at Jayne Tancred's article The Tancreds were/are a very extensive family, I have 20 of them buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery the last being amongst the last few burials there at the end of 1902. all the best Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Cunningham" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 3:40 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Edwin Punch aged 2 & Mary Tancred aged 48 both died 1868 seeking place of burial > Hi Patrick > > The world is a funny place some times. > I had just finished reading your post, then opened my next email, only to > find that the article in question was written by a Jayne Tancred! > > As a small business owner I subscribe to an online newsletter called > Flying > Solo. > She has an article in it at the moment. > > Mary > > > > On Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 12:40 PM, patrick callaghan > <[email protected]>wrote: > >> Greetings Listers >> Many will know that I am re-creating the lost burial register of the >> Balmain Catholic cemetery and many >> Tancred and Punch family members are buried there, however, Edwin Punch >> and >> Mary >> > Please remember to snip most of the earlier message before you post any > reply...... Hi Patrick The world is a funny place some times. I had just finished reading your post, then opened my next email, only to find that the article in question was written by a Jayne Tancred! As a small business owner I subscribe to an online newsletter called Flying Solo. She has an article in it at the moment. Greetings Listers Many will know that I am re-creating the lost burial register of the Balmain Catholic cemetery and many Tancred and Punch family members are buried there, however, Edwin Punch and Mary Tancred probably died a few months before the Balmain cemetery opened and I seek help to find there place of burial, I suspect that Edwin was buried at Devonshire St and would be grateful if someone who has the book on Devonshire St. could do a lookup There is a death notice for Edwin in the SMH 21 June 1869 Mary Tancred, wife of Stephen died at Parramatta and may have been buried locally, she died on 20 June 1869 there is an SMH death notice on 30 June 1869 or she may also have gone to Devonshire St. If either of these were buried in the Balmain Catholic cemetery they would be the first burials there by several months and a real bonus for me Many thanks for any help Patrick Callaghan
Hi All I knew a William Whalley when working at an Aged Care Facility in Townsville Queensland. I left five years ago, and he was still alive then. He had a son who used to visit too. Tracey, Their marriage appears to be listed at FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl William (he's entered as Whallay) and Eliza Rook, marriage registered September quarter 1844, Ecclesfield, 22/123. You can order UK certificates direct from the GRO - around £9.25 each, but they don't give nearly as much information as Australian certificates. You will get father's name and occupation for bride and groom but won't get where the parties were born or their mother's names - ages often shown as just "full age". https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp you will need to register (free) and they accept online payment. You need the names of the parties, the registration year and quarter, the place of registration and the references. There are also agents who will order from the GRO on your behalf but this is more expensive. Cannot identify them in NSW indexes, Qld, SA, WA or Vic deaths to 1910 or NZ deaths. Perhaps the family returned to UK? I am trying to find out information in relation to William and Eliza Whalley (nee Rook). They were married in England in 1844 Ecclesfield. How do I find marriage certificate. I know that they came to Australia as I have a copy of their children's (4) listing as being baptised at Newcastle Christ Church Cathedral in 1853. After that they seem to disappear. I can find no death notice for either of them. Hope someone can help. Thanks. Tracey.
Dear Karen, National Archives have looked after immigration since Federation, although they took about 20 years to take over from the State Government. www.naa.gov.au is their website. Hi Marg, Thank you very much for your emails and suggestions. I will follow up that one and get some transcriptions for Alfred Taylor especially. I do have a gut feeling they are not from Aust but were immigrants themselves. The "Pyster" family that you mentioned was her nephew and his family on there way here. Thanks again for your help and everyone else that has emailed. Am truly appreciative in everyone's help. Kindest Regards Karen Hi Karen Isnt one that I know of just from India My GG Aunt Charlotte Street arrived in Australia in 1950. Hello List members, Can someone point me in the right direction. I am trying to find the website for passengers arriving into Sydney in 1950 from India. My GG Aunt Charlotte Street arrived in Australia in 1950. I believe also that her brother Albert Pyster accompainied her on the trip and after a few months he left for England. I was also wondering if the Taylor's whom she was living with also travelled out from there. Thats a wild guess but if I can find any records I would be able to search. Many thanks Karen New Zealand

Hi Karen I checked on Ancestry voting records and for 1954 living at 31 Hamilton St Lane Cove were; Lilian Ivy Doris TAYLOR Alfred Francis TAYLOR Neither were on the electoral roll in Australia prior to 1954 ?did they come to Australia with Charlotte. As Bill said check The Ryerson Index as Lilian is on it and you may request a look up. Hi Rosemary, Thankyou very much for your email. Have no idea whom this Taylor family are. Aunty Tiny (Charlotte) was married in India. Had one child that died. Her husband died. She had 1 sister whom married and had 2 sons. They are not them. Her brothers whom married of course had children but all under her maiden name. She left India and came to Australia in 1950. Not sure why she went there as my Grandad her nephew was here in NZ along also with his brother and sister. She was financially very well off of what we know, so was interesting to see she had made a will whilst there and not long before she died. Have no idea who they are.
